3 x Prototype A-Wings... then what?

By jesper_h, in X-Wing Squad Lists

A-Wings rule! Everybody knows that. But now that you've taken three total badasses and used up 45 points, what do you spend the remainder on? Turrets are pretty hot right now and you've got several flavours to choose from. Your options are:

Dash Rendar (52pts)

VI, Heavy Laser Cannon, Outrider, Navigator

Really mobile, not as vulnerable to Rebel Captive, arc-dodges really well without being limited to green moves. VI for that important trumping of pilot skill against Echo/Chirenau. 3pt initiative bid against Whisper or a Hull Upgrade. Hard to catch the donut hole of a ship that can switch 1 banks to 3 banks on the fly even before considering the barrel roll.

Han Solo (55pts)

VI, Engine Upgrade, C3PO, Millennium Falcon

Solid and dependable. Doesn't care what your pilot skill is. One less dice than Dash, but might be around for longer and equally good at scooting about. Trumps any Phantoms completely at the expense of having a harder time against high-agility swarms.

Chewbacca (54pts)

Predator, Gunner, C3PO, Millennium Falcon

Workhorse. Gets thrown into the thick of it and pumps out reliable damage against pretty much anything. Needs it because you're only rolling three dice against a Phantom's four, but they'll almost always be hits.

What do you pick?

I saw/read about 1 trick where you put a proton rocket on Dash to cover 1/4 of your donut hole. I like Dash here.

Why not go all-out on the A-wing front?

Tycho Celchu, A-wing Test Pilot, Push The Limit, Daredevil, Experimental Interface, Proton Rockets

The agility of a Boost/Daredevil (or Daredevil/Boost) on top of an A-wing's already ridiculous dial is insane - not as much lateral repositioning as a phantom, perhaps, but able to come about nearly 180 o in addition to his manouvre.

Why not go all-out on the A-wing front?

It's not the kind of list I enjoy playing. For what it's worth, that Tycho build is fun. I've flown it before. But if you come up against a well-flown Whisper or lose initiative bid against Echo, it still falls apart as easily as any other A-Wing.

For my part, I would take a fourth Prototype Pilot for the whole mini-swarm and Keyan. Either:

-Defensive Keyan (39pts):

Keyan Farlander + Sensor Jammer + Push the Limit + B-Wing/E2 + Jan Ors

-Offensive Keyan (40pts):

Keyan Farlander + Heavy Laser Cannon + Push the Limit

-Sneaky Keyan (40pts):

Keyan Farlander + Advanced Sensor + Stay on Traget + Ion Cannon + B-Wing/E2 + Tactician

But I hate turrets so....

Wedge and Biggs for a nice hammer and anvil list. I also hate turrets...

Okay thanks everybody for your answers to the question I wasn't asking :(

Well, we answered to the question asked in the thread title.

If I had to pick from those three choice, I would probably go with Chewie... but I'm not too sure about it. He,s not maneuvrable and act at PS5, so even though he can take a beating, he'll still fall pretty fast to concentrated fire and you'll be left with 3 prototype A-Wing to come back from a 55pts deficit.

If you pick Han, you have the mobility and the PS, but lack in the firepower with 3 ship with 2 attack, and Han without gunner, predator and who will probably either boost or evade each turn, so you're left only with his ability to modify rolls.

If you pick Dash, you have the mobility with Barrel Roll, but without Engine Upgrade, he's not that hard to get. Same as with Han, if you barrel roll to get out of range 1, you are left with an unmodified attack roll, not that scary.

So in the end, Chewie. But I wouldn't be too scared going against it.

Id go with dash, outrider, hlc, and then some upgrades to boost mobility to the maximum. The reason I say that is bc you would end up with an extremely mobile list that should be able to arc dodge some stuff, flank very well, and move the fight around to your pleasing.

I was considering the following list for a tourney:

Chewbacca , Predator, Gunner, MF, EU

3 x Prototypes + Chaardan

The plan is to have Chewy always evade or boost out of arc if possible, whichever is likely to have him suffer less damage. He uses the action-independent offensive boosts provided by Predator and Gunner to deal consistent damage, which works especially well against high-agility targets (which is exactly what A-Wings will have most time hurting).

I would not personally bother with EU on Chewie. Being only PS5 and the meta currently with very high PS builds, you won't find a lot of use for it. You're probably better with 3P0 and being tanky as much as possible.
