By entMoot, in Strategy and deck-building

Hey everyone, I thought I'd share one of my favorite decks.

3 Heroes
Legolas
Eowyn
Glorfindel (Foundations of Stone)
12 Allies
3 Silvan Refugee
3 Vassal of the Windlord
3 Escort from Edoras
3 Bofur
13 Attachments
1 Black Arrow
3 Dagger of Westernesse
3 Light of Valinor
3 Miruvor
3 Rivendell Blade
25 Events
2 A Good Harvest
1 Close Call
3 Elrond's Counsel
3 Goblin-Cleaver
1 Power of Orthanc
3 The Seeing-Stone
1 The Wizards's Voice
3 Unseen Strike
3 Courage Awakened
3 Hands Upon the Bow
2 Quick Strike
Strategy : I built this deck specifically to lower my score against Passage Through Mirkwood, and I have not been disappointed with the results. You may notice that the deck is loaded with one-shot effects that boost attack and willpower, but not too much else. The deck's goal is to start with a hand that will let you quest with Glorfindel + Eowyn for at least 11 WP and then have Legolas kill an enemy in the first round. Against Passage Through Mirkwood, this means we are trying to clear the first 2 stages of the quest on round 1 and follow that up with a quick slaying of Ungoliant's Spawn or another questing surge to clear out Beorn's Path.
I played a quick few games to the following results:
Passage Through Mirkwood
38 (2 rounds + 22 threat + 1 dmg - 5 Hummerhorns VP) - Beorn's Path
35 (1 round + 26 threat - 1 Black Arrow VP) - Don't Leave the Path!
87 (4 rounds + 34 threat + 4 dmg + 9 Legolas dead)
As you can see, there's going to be some big variance in how smoothly the game goes, but I enjoy the deck's reckless play style and risks that sometimes pay off big -- or blow up in my face like that last game where Legolas got eaten by a King Spider+Shadow Effect.
I'm curious if anyone has thoughts on how to make this deck even more consistent or cards that should be replaced?

I really like decks like these, that try to take on a quest in a very specific manner. It really opens up dusty parts of the card pool. As for tips on consistency, they're rather hard to give without playing the deck yrself. I reckon. Glaring omissions are unexpected courage, galadhrims greeting (since you rely on low threat), but these omissions i like very much :) perhaps stand and fight, since you have a lot of allies that pop?

BTW, i can imagine how you tackle 2 quests in one round: quest (what is it, 8?) then kill a character with legolas to clear stage 2, but how do you clear stage 3?

Thanks. You're right that Unexpected Courage, Galadhrim's Greeting would both provide powerful effects, but I don't really want to see them in my opening hand since I need to spend my resources on Escort from Edoras or Courage Awakened-type cards. If things go much later into the game, the deck hasn't done it's job. Stand and Fight has always looked appealing. Maybe I will try it in place of the A Good Harvests.

Yes. It takes 8 progress to clear Stage 1 which means at least 11 Willpower is required to beat the Forest Spider. Old Forest Road and (hopefully) a treachery. Glorfindel and Eowyn represent 7 WP to start with, so I want to be using my spirit resources to get 4 more WP on the table. Meanwhile, I need a readying effect for Glorfindel (Miruvor is great) and/or an attack boost for Legolas so that he can take out the spider (or something else that gets revealed).

When things go to plan, I get the WP needed to overcome Stage 1 during the first quest phase, Legolas uses Hands Upon the Bow + Unseen Strike to take out the spider during the travel phase and gets us past Stage 2. Then I need to be able to generate either 11 attack for the Spawn or roughly 11 more WP if I'm just questing again.

So far, I have only beaten Passage Through Mirkwood during the 2nd round. I would like to get to the point where it's feasible to kill the Spawn on the first turn so that at least, very rarely, I could get that first-round victory. If you think the deck looks fun, you should definitely take it for a spin! It is also reasonably strong against Encounter at Amon Din, which is another scenario that can be taken down in less than 3-4 rounds regularly. I don't remember if I've taken the deck against any other quests yet.

The more i think of your approach to deck building the more i like it. As an amateur chess player, i really like chess problems. Lotr lcg is a game that is suitable for these problems as well. It really opens up new ways of deck building and keeps old quests fresh.

A couple of examples:

- Clearing PtM in one turn. Remove the other stage 3.

- Clearing CatC in one turn. Although exxtremely unlikely.

- Clearing Encouter at Amon Dîn without any token on dead villagers.

- Killing the witch-king MaO using only hobbits.

I'll give the deck a spin as soon as I have some time to play.

Let me know how it does when you do get around to testing!

My next challenge is going to be Journey Down the Anduin, also shooting for as few turns as possible. Whenever I get around to testing a deck to reasonable success (i.e. beating my dwarf deck's score), I'll post it as well.

Yeah, that scenario continues to be a source of inspiration. I'm interested whether clearing 1a in one turn is feasible. I'm curious about the scores!
