I know that "we'll get them, when we get them", but does anyone else think that the popular opinion of one book a year seems a little ridiculous? This game line would really benefit if the books were released, at the very least, every three months or so. What does everyone else think about this? Do you think getting one book a year for this game line is realistic and acceptable? Would you prefer them to be released closer together? What is everyone else's opinion?
The other three books.....
Yeah, one a year is way too slow. People will forget about the others. One book a quarter would be the best.
I was thinking along the same lines. Plus the books are thin. I could understand one a year if they were around 300-400 pages. Or something like Paizo puts out for Pathfinder. The Zombie Apocalypse book was 144 pages. Shouldn't be too hard to crank one out every three months or so.
I'll probably not get any of the other books as I found the Zombie Apocalypse book a little thin. All the mechanics would work for the other settings, so you could go right ahead and run those games with the rules we already have. The different scenarios in the current book are based on popular culture, so it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with a robo-apocalypse set in the Terminator world, or an alien invasion set in War of the Worlds.
Just pick your favourite film as inspiration and use the same rules. Because the book is so open ended, lot of work has to be done by the GM already in the existing book, so I think it'll be a tough to add value with the other books. And there will be a lot of repeated information.
I think I would prefer concrete adventure books - some really well written stories which confront the characters with lots of cool set pieces and moral dilemmas. Kind of like the Walking Dead comics or video games.
I kinda feel the same thing, but if they are going to extend the line I can see supplements coming out. You might even see a delay in the rest if they do so.
As far as the books being "thin" this was one of the draws for me as I knew I wouldn't have to learn a great deal as far as mechanics go (say something like Shadowrun). It's minimalist approach is the point. Here is the world, dice rules, and creation now do what you want with it.
Edited by rg56538I'm definitely going to purchase the other three books as soon as they release them. I really want to run adventures for these settings and scenarios. I'm a little worried that the general consensus so far may cause FFG to cancel the line before completion though. Even if I never ran them, they'd look **** good on my gaming shelf. I'm just as much a collector of RPGs as I am a player/GM.
Well the first printing is sold out, everywhere near me sold out quickly and FFG hasn't shipped any new ones last time I checked. That's why i had to say "f" it and get the PDF. Hell last time I checked Amazon they only had 2 copies listed. FFG has a good reputation with their board/card games even if it doesn't sell as well as they like, I am sure they will release the others. Seems to me what they are charging for the book and PDF they are making a tidy profit from each sale.
edit: spelling

This and then some
If I get the others, I'll probably just go the PDF if I get them. While I like the Invasion concept, I'll forego the others probably
Couple of thoughts -
The other three books are at least partially written, at least the game mechanics section is. A chunk of the work should be translation and adaptation of the fluff and some mechanics that may have changed from the originals. Of course if the folks working on this line have other projects, then things could take longer.
If it goes like with this book, we might be able to expect the next books about 3 - 4 months after their respective subforums open. I'm going to hazard a guess that they opened this subforum right around the time they sent the book to the printer in China.

What "general consensus" is this?
There just seems to be a general vibe that no one really wants to get the other books in the series. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. I could be that I'm picking up a false vibe. It's hard to feel the tone of people through words on a screen.
Plus, I have seen 2 write people that they won't get them... I'm picking up all of them as well.
I'll admit, I didn't get Zombie Apocalypse, but I plan on getting Gods and Alien Invasion if I've got the spare $80. Might get Machines, but not sure there.
I want all four of them. I knew right away that I would want them. After reading through ZA, my want and need for these books to be in my collection was confirmed.
I hope they continue to publish the other books, especially the machines book because that's what I'm really looking forward to. I'm still waiting on my book to get to me so I can't speak on it being thin or not but I'm new to rpgs so that might be a good thing. Zombies are overdone in my opinion and I'm a little burnt out on them, but I still picked up the book because I felt like it was a good beginner rpg to start a gaming group with.

It will be a very good starter RPG for you as it is "thin" and a quick read with with easy rules. The toughest part of it is that it leaves a lot up to the DM as far as the world building and feature/abilities goes.
Most RPG's have an abundance of rules covering everything with fully fleshed out campaigns supplements you can run. Those rules end up getting simplified or argued about until "house rules" get established so on and so forth.
I got the PDF, but yeah, it became clear very quickly that I not only can hack the other titles myself, I can also hack other scenarios beyond the scope of the books (government conspiracies, all that jazz).
That being said, I'll probably get them anyways, because I enjoy running their scenarios. Also, the PDF is so affordable (@ $20), that I'd do it just out of supportive obligation.
But seriously, a book a year? The heck are ya'll doing? Cutting the trees down to make the paper?
The notion of it being "a book a year" came from the OP not FFG and I am pretty sure they won't take that long.
I was curious where this thought of one book a year came from. I don't recall reading anywhere any timeframe for release for the books. Was there something I missed?
Over shoot your estimate and you will be pleasantly surprised when it comes out before then. So yeah 1 year estimate.

Yes because pessimists are never disappointed.

Someone in another thread mentioned they were anticipating one book a year. I don't recall which thread it was though.

144? that's the all book?
Yep
