Best Mistake Ever Made

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

speaking of epic, i've seen a fully kitted shuttle (title, HLC, engine upgrade, rebel captive) get punted off the board at full health via transport ramming. it was incredible.

I've totally done that, not a mistake though. Space cow loses to space tuna in a collision.

This said though: Let's talk about collisions and mistakes.

Asteroids. All the asteroids, one game I lost more ships(final hp) to asteroids than enemy fire.

i rolled a power window up on my neck once! Oh, you mean an Xwing mistake. I also sprinted away from a huey while being attached to it with a gunners harness. hard to say which one hurt more.

Just last night I misjudged my de-cloak and put my phantom right through a debris field facing into another one. He had to take the hard 1 next turn to avoid it and was promptly blown up. Worst approach ever with that list!

As far as best piloting error:

At a tourney, was down to my Doomshuttle with one hull against Chirpy and Turr, with Stunned Pilot on the Squint. I did an aggressive three bank, which succeeded in blocking Turr and forcing another damage on him. Doing so left me with no way to turn around before flying off the edge.

However, by flying off the edge, Lord Vader survived to deal crits another day!

We played a mission with 12 asteroids for a league game. "Great", I thought, "I'm running Dash and he loves Asteroids"

And it WAS great until I found myself unable to shoot with Dash due to being on an asteroid. There were that many asteroids and enemy ships around him that I simply couldn't go anywhere.

Before anyone asks, yes, this is the feared "Super Dash" with push the limit and engine. I was on an asteroid in the middle of the field and even with a boost and barrel roll I couldn't end up in a place where I wasn't overlapping an asteroid or bumping an enemy ship.

I'm probably the only person to ever have this problem with Dash...

My most glorious moment was in a casual game at my now closed FLGS . I was picking the movement for my falcon and put the dial down. While my opponent was still choosing his headings I realized I had chewie heading off the table. So immediately grabbed my dial and fixed it. Or so I thought. I flipped my dial and flew off the table . I had the right bearing originally but over thought my self to a loss.

Five. Blank. Green. Dice.

Banked a fully loaded krassis off the table to miss an asteroid. Also declocked Echo off the board in my first game with it.

And in a mistake so game-changing as to make Tie Fighters broken when wave 1 was all we had:

For the first couple of months playing the game (only maybe two or three games in each of those months mind you), somehow read the barrel roll section wrong. This led to ties facing a different direction when barrel rolling, not moving forward or back along their base, just ending up range 1 to the side, and facing the opposite direction.

Those were terrifying times to be a rebel. And I have no idea how that thought ever crossed any of our minds, considering the only other way to turn round was stressful.

In my first couple games I read Howlrunner's ability as "Add one attack dice" in stead of reroll one. Needless to say we banned howlrunner after two games. And then un-banned her after re-reading her ability a week later.

When playing my third game ever (first one at my new FLGS), I hastily grabbed the wrong damage deck; I reached for the one I hadn't shuffled and played with yet.

Every crit I suffered was doing double damage. Unsurprisingly, I was pretty solidly trounced.

I've seen a lot of people fly their ships off the board. I haven't really done that myself but I've noticed others do it.

Best mistake... Probably something involving failing to outmaneuver another ship and being forced to have a dice showdown with my opponent.

Plopping Whisper on an asteroid

Plopping Whisper on an asteroid

Ditto. On turn 2, while in range 1 of an enemy Z-wing and Range 2 of Etahn. Needless to say she didn't do much for me that game.

Parking Bobba Fett on an asteroid three turns in a row.

The SAME asteroid.

In the first round of a tournament, parking the buzz-saw shuttle on an asteroid on the first turn and the fourth turn and sixth turn. I think I did more damage to the shuttle than my opponent did.

That is absolute gold... and terrifying at the same time :D

My worst... I set a prox mine for my opponent.. here's the Bad.... another of my ships flew through it before my opponent could.. it helps to remember where you're moving some days.. lol.. fortunately, I rolled focus or blanks.. lol so, just 3 wasted points..

For the first dozen or so games, we allowed ships to take the same action twice, if they were allowed by abilities like push-the-limit. e.g. double boosting a-wings and interceptors.... We never used it to take two focuses, as I guess that seemed wrong at the time.

Those games were more fun. I may try making it a house rule again, for boost/barrel roll only.

For a light hearted topic, list the best mistake you have made in x-wing.

Mine, I was stressed and picked a red move then promptly flew off the board.

Double barrel rolling YT-2400, for when you absolutely have to get from one board edge to the other in a single turn

I pick up my damage deck to deal my self a crit. The top two cards stick and my deck ejects out a lethal "Direct Hit" instead of the damage sensor array that should have been on top.

Best Mistake Ever Made ... ?

I purchased a total of 119 ships within the X-Wing Miniatures world.

That's it. Just that.

At the FFG Store Championship last year I set Backstabber up backwards in the start area, and my opponent and I had a good laugh about how he could insist that I fly him off the board. We kept joking around and then had to rush to finish up the game in time. I can't remember his name now, but every time I ran into him we had a really fun and hilarious game.

I halted captain Yorr, then K turned an Academy TIE not thinking about the timing. Academy moved first as PS1, Yorr absorbed the stress, then Yorr tried to stop. Luckily he was pointing towards center of the board and had nowhere to go without bumping. Opponent got to choose dial and we all know has great this shuttle dials are. :)
