Unofficial Daybreak Expansion

By CPro, in Battlestar Galactica

No sympathiser variant

There is an official no sympathiser variant, it's on the website for the board game. The starting resources are lower to compensate for the Cylon's lack of sympathiser

The resources for the no sympathiser variant are as follows

Fuel 8 no change from the standard rules

Food 7 one less from the standard rules

Morale 9 one less from the standard rules

Population 10 two less from the standard rules

I assume the starting resources for the Daybreak expansion assume one is playing with a sympathiser. If using a no sympathiser, (which is far better!) I propose reducing the starting resources that Daybreak starts with. This is to be fair to the Cylon

Fuel 9 no change from standard Daybreak

Food 7 one less from the standard Daybreak

Morale 10 one less from the standard Daybreak

Population 12 two less from the standard Daybreak

Opinions? Going to play in a few days!!!

And can you explain the reasoning behid Tory's negative? Does not have no sympathiser when playing woth her, add an extrra not a cylon card.. If we're playing with no sympathiser, what should we be thinking for her negative? Or is her negaitve really a positive?

Tory's negative-You wrote "add a You are a cylon card" in a 4 or 6 player game. That means two Cylons in a 4 player game, three Cylons in a six player game. Did you mean that, or did you mean to add a "you are not a Cylon" card?

Tory - I feel if we are going to play with an extra Cylon player ofr 4 and 6 players, which is pretty heavy for the humans, that the humans deserve one resource more than a normal start, to compensate. When playing without sympathiser it averages to one rresource less per reource, less 4 total, so I give one resource extra when having an extra Cylon

why would anyone choose Tyrol? His postitive ability is in fact negative and his once per game is pretty underwhelming since the other version could repair a location and get a free action. The other characters seem reasonable but Tyrol just seems like a pointless character, not to mention his negative is huge and would require tons of upkeep to roll the die on every turn.

Dan -

Sorry for not responding sooner. It's obvious that you care enough to ask a lot of good questions, I just have had a couple of busy weeks in a row. Let me see if I can't answer all of these:

In regards to the No Sympathizer Variant; I'd definetly urge you to give that a try [we will too]. We hadn't even thought of that because we always play with the Sympathizer when needed to.

Tory's Negative - On a 4 to 6 player game there is a Sympathizer card thrown in on the original version. So in the original version for a 4-player game there are 1 "You are a Cylon," 6 "you are not a cylon" and 1 "Sympathizer" card. In Daybreak, with Tory's Negative it would be this: 2 "you are a cylon" cards and 6 "you are not a cylon" cards. Also, if you are playing without the sympathizer like you said before, I would still do her negative like I said above.

You had a chance to check it out yet?

Kamakaze -

Tyrol's positive being a negative is someway true, but it extremely helps him to stay out of the Brig ["Hey I'm not a cylon, and if you Brig me you will pay"]. While I agree that his original once per game ability of being able to take another action after a repair was good, I also think that his new once per game is very good in terms of Daybreak's game mechanics. There are a ton of damaged vipers, and way more damage tokens then in the original version. He can really be a lifesaver. But, I'll be sure to play with him the next couple of times and quadruple-druple check :). Thanks for taking the time to check it out. Anything else you find odd to you?

Awesome job! I'm looking forward to giving some feedback once I get a chance to try this.

Played Daybreak. Very close. I think if Tory gets an extra full-blooded Cylon in the sleeper phase with 4 or 6 players, then the humans should get one more resource across the board. Humans get four less resources total when ditching the Cylon sympathiser rule, so humans getting one more in each makes sense when there is an extra Cylon

Good stuff. Have changed William Adama to being able to throw anyine in the Brig with his Military Discretion ability, but kept the old cannot use Admiral's quarters weakness. he has to be really mad, but can be so at anyone, in order to Brig. My group was positive. These are fine tunings, the whole expansion is good, and doesn't make a longer game.

Hey everybody. Pretty big update here. We took in consideration a lot of what people said, and tried a couple of different things, and this is what we came up with. Please download the latest version and enjoy. The more comments the better :).

Version 2.0:
- Added and changed Jump Coordinate Cards to where
you draw a random Jump Coordinate Card after every
jump. Read Rules
- Balanced Character Cards:
- Modified Gaius Baltar’s Angelic Visions ability to say
“After the Recieve Skills step...”
- Lee Adama has been given two new abilties.
- Helo’s Virtuous Choice abiltiy has changed.
- Modified Sam Anders’ negative ability.
- Modified Galen Tyrol’s negative ability.
- Modified Starbuck’s negative ability to be 1 card
[instead of 2].
- Re-worded Dee’s negative ability for clarification.
- Adjusted Line of Succesion.
- Added the back of Jump Coordinate Cards in the PDF
file so they may be printed off.
- Added more questions and answers to the FAQ.

btw there is still a typo in Torys first ability, it says "raise of reduce" instead of "raise or reduce"

Tyrols negative is much better now as it only has to be done on his turn, I still think his negative far outweights the positives, especially since he is never the admiral, president or pilot =/

Some thoughts

I played the previous version, and it was very close and balanced. We had Baltar, Tigh, Lee, Chief Tyrol and Dualla. Did not experience Baltar or Chiief as unbalanced, but can certainly try the new versions

Questions

What is the point of the new Helo's one-time abiltiy? Why use an action to trade places with someone when you can just move? And can his ability be used to get out of the Brig?

Thoughts

I really like that the old Daybreak had the normal start and the Battle for the Colony as the dramatic end. It was good to follow the big moments of the series. I could suggest having the Fall of Caprica start and Colony end, and randomize the two middle cards.

I really like having more Jump Coordinate cards!

Is chief's negative "start of your turn" before Receive skills step?

Feedback

Played Daybreak a few times. Good.

Suggestions

It is cool to have the thematic part of the game. Normally ends with Kobol, with Pegasus there is something with New Caprica. I think the end battle with the Colony should be last , fall of Caprica first and the two in the middle randomized

Characters. My group has playtested these

Always a question if a Cylon can play the character hidden

1. Sharon should be able to ignore a Raider-Heavy Raider icon, or add one if one is not there. So she can be evil

2. Chief's once in the game should be valid even if there is no damaage "What kind of repairs are you doing, Cylon Tyrol?"

3. Felix should have make a -1 jump automatically fail or succeed. To be evil

4. If Tory adds an extra full Cylon, please give the humans one resource extra in each category. Logic being the No Cylon sympathiser official variant

Really good extra battles, good job, fast-paced and fun

I like this expansion. I'd like to translate it into the czech language, but downloadable PDF is not in editable form. Can you publish editable version of PDF or in any other format? thx

William Adama seems to me to be clearly more powerful than any of the character options I've studied after having played twice (no, not just the two I was playing).

His abilities are excellent and his weakness is completely situational.

Unfortunately, while the idea is excellent, that means I can't trust the overall balance of this fan-made expansion either.

Hey,

I would really like to play this game, but unfortunately it is no longer available. So if somebody could make it available it would be great.

Thanks a lot.

Same as above, the links to dl this expansion are too old or broken. Anyone able to upload it again? Thanks!

Update:

Hello everyone. Sorry to see that you weren't able to download the expansion. Unfortunately the workload of my job really gets built up during sometimes of the year. But anyways, I do have some free(er) time now and have fixed the links so Daybreak can be downloaded. Just download from the front page or click here.

And again, all the feedback is fantastic and I am thankful. I will continue to look for ways to improve the game as more feedback comes in.

Note: phalineq; I am working on converting the rules section of the pdf into a word document so it may be translated if you are still interested. It should be up shortly.

Hi.

I've read a lot of good things about this expansion but it seems that it is no longer availible :(. Is there any chance to have it uploaded again on some server? Maybe rapidshare if the one You are using now is having some problems. Or maybe if it's not too big it could be send via e-mail? Mine is [email protected] I would really appreciate having this because it looks great :D.

Thanks.

Ohhh this looks cool.

Update:
Argh.... it would seem that I should try to host somewhere else. Here again is another host to download Daybreak.

Click here, or it as now updated on the top thread.

Also, if anybody can help me upload it to a new and better place, or upload it themselves. Please feel free to do so (with credit of course) :).

v2 is the newest set of everything out for this player created variant, correct?

Correct. :)

I checked out Daybreak.

It looks like an okay variant, the coordinates might make the game fun.

However, how about updating the rules to match Pegasus better? Specifically execution of characters (either because of character card abilities or the admiral)

Some of the characters are a bit off, in my mind. I mentioned W. Adama's weakness being one (the old one works fine, though, so it's easy to switch that back in), and I agree what was said about Chief: the topmost ability should be something the character can do on his own turn, and it shouldn't be one that only helps the player and/ or the cylons.

Helo is the weakest of the bunch, in my mind. His OPG seems very, very weak, even if you can take characters out of the brig with it and I'm assuming that's the reason for the ability - you should write something more specific and more powerful for this purpose instead or either at least make the power usable at any time, not requiring an action - you might well find use for it in a pinch.

Oh, and Gaeta's primary really should be XOable and more powerful (how about allowing a jump at -3 on a 5+?) and subject to betrayal (option to autofail).

A simple solution would be to let him use Helo's rerolling ability, though.

Thanks for checking out Daybreak, and I think you made some interesting suggestions in relation to the characters. I also think you'll find the variant is quite entertaining, in relation to Jump Coordinate cards if you choose to try and play the game [i assume you haven't yet played, only because you said 'might' in your post]. It is much more intense in my opinion.

Also, I just wanted to let everyone know that we have been working on fitting Daybreak into the new Pegasus expansion for sometime now, and we are not too far away from releasing it. There are some certain new elements that we think could make it extremely fun and new. Though we think the original game still works extremely well with all of the character's abilities [after long playtests mind you...lol], we recognize some people were not keen on some characters abilities and we will address that. I'd say the first one was for us, and this one's for you [though we still want to make a game we still enjoy]. So please, bring forth some suggestions and ideas as we are close to wrapping up the game, and we shall try to implement them. Thanks for your continuing support.
