Unofficial Daybreak Expansion

By CPro, in Battlestar Galactica

daybreaklogo.jpg

This is a fan made created expansion for BSG the boardgame. It has been play-tested a numerous amount of times in 3,4,5 player game variants. The goal of this expansion was to 'update' the game in terms of it's counterpart [the television series] as well as making a slightly faster-paced game, while still keeping the essence and overall rules of the fantastic original version. Please give any comments (congrats or critiques), in terms of the game, and we'll gladly take it all in.

Have Fun Playing while we wait for the Pegasus Expansion!

What's New?

Jump Coordinates
Daybreak introduces Jump Coordinates. Much like the initial ‘Set Up Ships’ of the Setup Phase, the Jump Coordinate cards will tell you where to place ships, as well as adding or subtracting resources after a jump.

New and Edited Character Cards
New Character Cards [and abilities] have been created to better represent their actual counterparts in regards to the story arch of the entire television
series [battlestar Galactica]. If you haven’t watched all of the series, and care if you are spoiled, perhaps this isn’t the game for you.

Expansions are fun

Questions and comments:

Tory Foster: once in the game, Hostility. Can it be used on a revealed Cylon Player?

William Adama: His negative is no negative if Roslin, Apollo or Starbuck aren't playing. Maybe change that, say can't use Admiral's Quarters. Or something that is always negative

Agathon- Family ties negative. The "this character" sent to the Brig if the skill check fails is the revealed Cylon or sympathiser, not Helo, right? And what if the

Crisis card isn't a skill check, like Cylon attack, or Admiral or President chooses

Dualla-Sagitarron- Cannot move on next turn from Sick bay. Can she be given an Executive Order?

On the "Battle for the Colony", what is the second symbol at the bottom? Kind of "D" and "T" together?

Thanks. Good work

Looks good, but as a total BSG nerd I have to suggest one correction:

"Athena" is Sharon Agathon (Helo's wife)

Sharon Valerii is "Boomer"

Dan, thanks so much for downloading and asking the questions. I'll be sure to copy all these down and include a FAQ in the next update.

Hostility: Tory Foster's Hostility will work on a revealed Cylon. We talked about this in length when creating her, and we figured if we didn't allow it to be used on revealed Cylon's, then there balance of the power Hostility would extremely favor a Cylon.

Agathon's Negative: The "this character" refers to Helo [Helo goes to the Brig]. I can now see how the wording could be misconstrued in his negative ability. I will definetely make a slight word change on the next update. To answer the second part of your question: If the Crisis Card isn't a skill check, then that part of the negative becomes null in void. You still have to resolve that Crisis no matter what though.

Dualla - Saitarron: Yes. She can be given an Executive Order to get out of Sick Bay.

Battle of the Colony - Jump Coordinate Card: the DT refers to 'Damage Token,' so you would draw one damage token after you setup the rest of the Jump Coordinate card.

Quite right sir happy.gif. As a BSG nerd myself, I can't believe I missed it. I'll be sure to put that in the next update.

Has this been playtested? If we playtest it, what are you looking for, or do you want general reports? I had a blast playtesting the fan expansion Pegasus. Do you need help on anything? Does it work?

Yes. This has been playtested a good amount of times in 3,4,5 player variants. In my opinion the game works very well (it's a little bit quicker, with much more action), but by all means please try it out for yourself and let me know how it went. We took a long time trying to figure out what the right amount of starting resources should be at the start of the game (we think we got it), but if you find something seems wrong, that would be the first place I would start adjusting. I feel none of the characters are 'broken' and they are well balanced. But let me know what you think.

Also, I just updated the first post with the latest release (v1.1). I fixed some typos and misspellings on characters cards, as well as revised Apollo's 'Military Advisor' ability to stop a scenario from occuring when he becomes a Cylon. So please download the latest release.

Side note: I also had a blast playing the unofficial Pegasus expansion. Very well designed and loads of fun.

William adama:

Can you explain why he can't throw Roslin, Lee or Starbuck in the Brig with his special ability? If those character are not playing, he has no negative. I have played and playtested a lot of games, and I see that as a potential weak spot, or way to exploit a loophole.

How about: Cannot use Admiral's quarters. Can only put someone in the brig with Military discretion (or maybe a Quorum card too) He has to be really mad at someone, once in the game, to put them in the brig, but cannot do the normal Admiral's quarters. He is normally a softie on that point, he has to be extraordniarily angry to Brig someone,

Can you share some thoughts on this and explain William Adama's negative? I know he likes those characters, but he has no negative if those characters are not playing.

Sharon's once in the game Cylon Virus

Does it work that in her Action phase, she says she is using the Virus. and we remember that the next time there is an activate raider, anytine later, the raiders don't activate, or does it mean she intervenes when an activate raider comes up, and stops it there? And can she intervene off turn?

Hey Dan... sorry it took so long to respond. It's been a busy last couple of days.

Adama: The short answer would be we wanted him more powerful than the original game. Also, since taking away Destination Cards the admiral himself has lost a lot of power. We felt it'd be best to give Adama (the admiral) less of a negative. Also, I never personally liked his ability to not be able to active Admiral's Quarters. He's the admiral.

Athena: Yes. It appears I missed another typo. Much like Anders one per game ability, you can intervene at any time. Perhaps the wording could have better. I'll be sure to change it.

Question: Now that the Destination cards are no longer used, when is the Sleeper Agent Phase triggered?

I see there is a version 2, but I don't see what is changed. If you want to change Athena's once in the game, call it an "ability" instead of "action", as per your last post.

Good question about sleeper phase and loyalty cards.

maybe the sleeper phase should come halfway, after the second jump?

Yes. Again, something that I missed to put in [just so you know I'm making a file of all my mistakeshappy.gif]. The sleeper agent phase occurs after the second jump.

Can you change Athena's once a game action from an "Action" to Ability, or something that doesn't say action, so we know it's for any time, not just action phase. And update sleeper phase. i am anxious to print it out, only want to do it oncehappy.gif, colour costs etc. Goiing to try to play this week

Yeah. I'll try and get on it as soon as I can. Expect later tonight.

William Adama again

His military discretion once in the game ability. It should be when he is Admiral. He of course starts as admiral, but things happen...Otherwise, he could use his ability to put the Admiral in the Brig, if he is not then the admiral. Or is this your intention, he can even put the admiral in the brig if he isn't the admiral?

If this weakens him, maybe his discretion could be used on more people?

Wiliam Adama

i sort of understand if William Adama can Brig anyone with his special ability, even the Admiral, I have seen the whole series. He can really fight back against mutinies and brigging, is that part of it? Or do you just want him to do it as Admiral?

Yes. That is the goal, and it seems to work good in the game. Let me know how it turns out for you in the playtest [if you play him that is].

This looks really cool! Thanks for posting. I'll have to try and get my group to give it a go.

I downloaded what is Daybreak-3, but Athena still has her once in the game listed as an "Action", and there is nothing about sleeper phase.

Hey Dan. Sorry it took so long. The update is now on the frontpage. So download and enjoy!

Thank you for your time with discussion. You had before a nice download with JPGs, a multi file one. Any chance of having that up with this latest version?

I don't want to harp on William Adama's one time ability. Just help me understand gameplay. If he plays and the other characters are the people he can't throw into the Brig with his ability, he has nothing. If the other characters are not from the list of people he can't thorw into the Brig, then he has no weakness. If someone chooses Adama near the start, I am going to pick someone who is immune to him. If Adama hasn't been picked and it is last choice, then Adama can be picked for maximum effect, or one is almost forced not to pick him, depending on who else is playing. Can you explain why this isn't a problem?

If someone gets two Cylon loyalty cards, they can give one of them to someone at "Resurrection" as a Cylon, as long as the distance is not 7. Since we don't play with distance, should we allow that a second loyalty card can always be given away? I don't feel like cancelling the Resurrection space. opinons?

Great job!

We will test it as soon as poosible.

Meanwhile I'll print out the new charakter sheets.

Yes. That second card can be given away to another player immediately. Very good question actually; that did not come up one single time with all the play tests. Good findhappy.gif. I'll add it to the FAQs
