Wes/Wedge, Jake, and Jan

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I been working on a 3 ship rebel list to toe me over at tournaments until Scum is released. Hopefully I can fly scum in February but what do you think of this?

I'm not a big fan of either really. The 4 points for opportunist on the Wes seems like a waste to me in the first list. This means that want to shoot at a target that doesn't have any tokens, which means his ability can't be used. That, or you're shooting at someone who has tokens, but his EPT can't be used. I would prefer those 5 points (inc R2) be swapped for EU + VI. Now he shoots at PS10 and can boost if need be. Furthermore, Jan can now shoot after him, and use her turret to do some real damage. It's always a bonus that they can move in whatever order you need. I like her load out, though I would be tempted to drop Moldy Crow, or replace Kyle with Recon Spec. Obviously the point of Kyle is that you always get a focus token (because you always do a green to clear the stress you always get for bumping someone else's attack). However, this means the first few turns you're only going to be generating and storing 1 token instead of the two you would be storing if you had Recon Spec. Which reduces the stack of tokens she'll have entering combat, which means that the usefulness of the Moldy Crow title is diminished. Jake is going to be a power house in this build. He'll be shooting last, at a defenseless target, and if you save Jan's ability for him (which I would unless Wes+Jan have a chance to kill the target off first), he'll do so with 4-5 dice, and less 1 agility from the opponent. It'll also catch them by surprise as most don't expect an A wing to be throwing 5 dice at them.

As for the second list, I like it a bit better because it doesn't have the weird Wes + Opp issue that the first list did. But there's also nothing to force the token off before Jake and Wedge shoot, so that can mean 4 wasted point on Jake and Wedge. But that's the only problem I have with that list.

Yeah I can see that. I really enjoy Opportunist because the 4 points are not only the potential of an additional attack die - they are psychology. The opponent needs to weigh the options of using or saving her focus/evades or whether to barrel, boost, or target lock and leave herself open to attacks of opportunity. It is a similar dilemna Palob poses - another ship I love to fly.

What you are saying makes sense, though. Wes' ability doesn't mesh well with his Opportunist. Without VI, he's not shooting first. The opponent would likely avoid using focus on attack if Wes has her in arc, but if she keeps the focus, she loses it to Wes' ability. Any ship in Wes' firing arc is damned either way. That sets up Jake and, as you say, encourages Jan's blaster turret to "swing away".

I thought Predator might be better on Wedge, in the second list. I just love Opportunist because you get an additional attack die and your action can be focus or TL so you're still getting modified dice. The opponent even gets one fewer. The second list probably will do better vs. Fat ships, since 3p0 is nullified by Jake and Wedge at Range 1-2 unless through an asteroid.

True, but if Jan is shooting at Han, then it doesn't matter than C3PO was negated on Jake and Wedge.

Quite so - but Jan shall do her best to participate nevertheless. ^___^

I get the logic behind this, but I'm not sure I completely agree.

Yes outmaneuver/Wedge doesn't completely negate C-3PO. But and if i'm reading too much into it, then so be it. But there seems to be this opinion that Outmaneuver/Wedge has no value vs 3PO as long as some other ship doesn't have that ability.

But between Wedge, Jake and Jan, I'd rather see Han use 3PO vs Jan then the other two, or Wes if you had him instead.

Jan IMO is there to buff other ships, not really do damage. So any damage she gets though is IMO a bonus.
