I ran up against Paul Heavers falcon for the first time last night.

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

And wow, what an awful, wonderful, powerful build.

I was doing pretty good at sticking one damage a turn on it for a few turns, got two damage on it that R2 flipped up for direct hits, and then my support died and chiraneau couldnt keep it up.

Man, that thing sucked.

It's obviously great at what it's supposed to do (beat other Falcons), but I actually think R2 is worse, maybe a lot worse than a Gunner against a lot of lists. Without that Gunner it's too easy to do no damage to a lot of ships, which is pretty rough for a 60 point ship. My lists tend to be built around various kinds of TIEs, so I'm always happy to see a Falcon without a Gunner.

I ran up against it at my last tournament. My first 100-0 loss ever in tournament play.

But I was playing ships I never play and had honestly never really faced a well-flown fat Han in tournament play. I think with a few practice runs I could beat it even with the less-than-optimal 4X list I was running. It's a really good build, but there are a few ships that can just demolish Han.

He lost at nats with gunner to an identical falcon With R2, so he switched it up, and it carried him to the World title.

R2 isn't just good against falcons, it's good against large ships in general. Anytime that you absolutely know you will see two ship builds, it's not a horrible idea to consider it yourself.

You have got to be throwing +10 dice at it to really put a hurting on it. Its something that two ship lists simply cannot do.

A 4 X list should really demolish a Falcon if you fly it right. Try staggering your formation to clog up its lanes of travel. If you fly in too tight a formation it has a much easier job of arc-dodging. The Stressbot (R3-A2) is almost a must take nowadays to fight the 2 ship/turret meta. If you stress Han, he's really limited to what maneuvers he can do the following turn. The Falcons green maneuvers are all pretty slow. You can't really fly a list that requires range 1 for synergy. They are just too easy to counter.

Does everyone know what this list is? I sure don't. Can someone share the secret?

Right, it's just at the time the Falcon was far and away the most important large ship.

It's something like Han with 3p0, R2D2, Predator, title, and Engine Upgrade, supported by 3 Zs.

Han w/ MF title, C-3P0, R2-D2 (crew), Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade

Tala Squadron x3

I believe it is:

Han w/ Predator, C3PO, R2D2, MF, EU

Tala x3

99 Pts.

You have got to be throwing +10 dice at it to really put a hurting on it. Its something that two ship lists simply cannot do.

If Corran is one of those two ships, then it can. In his off shooting turn, R2D2 can't regen since he'll have a shield, allowing your second ship to go after the support. And then the next turn, you bury him again with 9+ dice. And then your 2nd ship attacks the support while Corran can't attack... Etc.

If a two ship list has a pair of HLCs, it can do enough damage.

Paul's list probably has Predator instead of PTL, but a few guys here in ATL (where Nikk was playing last night) were running PTL for the extra action late in the game.

Actually, this build got rid of the EPT for han, and bumped one Z to an a green squadron a wing.

That's right...I was sitting at the table next to him during the second round and he commented "don't knock the power of the A-wing!"

Prototypes lose a lot of their benefits when they're stuck flying next to Z-95s.

It's not impossible to beat my list, but it can be really hard for lists that don't have a lot of red dice. If Han can get the opposing list down to 3 red dice thrown at him a turn, he wins. Works great against other Fat Hans, Decimators, etc.

I played a variant of it (dropped the Talas to play with a 2400) at a local 29-man store champs, and went 3-2, losing to two rebel swarms. The Talas really help in the swarm matchup!

Yup...Swarms are not this builds friend...

I played against that last night (before your round Nikk) with my XXX. I barely killed Han and a Bandit before time was called for the modified victory (after losing Wes and Luke).

This is 100 exact actually. You may have counted r2 as 3 pts instead of 4, since so many crew are 3. But ya that was the build.

Yes, but if you lose a ship before you can kill Han you have probably lost the game.
