Kinda wanna print out 30-40 select talisman cards and donate FFG $10... frowned upon?

Hello everyone,

I'm not interested in buying the full city expansion. I prefer the small box expansions instead because I prefer a smaller board where characters are more likely to interact. I currently have the bloodmoon and sacred pool expansions.

However, I would like to have the city expansion's shops/shop items (e.g. pets) and wanted poster cards. Since I don't want to pay $50 to purchase an entire board and city cards that I won't use, I thought it'd be better to simply print out the cards I want. Then I could mail FFG something like $10 in compensation.

Is this idea evil? What does FFG think about people printing their games? Some people print variants, and FFG seems to be okay with that, but is printing 2/5th of the cards to an expansion okay?

Wait and find a second hand one. Printing parts of an actual expansion would be frowned upon (at the very least).

I guess I shouldn't be greedy then. Is there a good place to purchase used expansions other than ebay or amazon.com? I'm not seeing any used city expansions available for purchase at the moment.

They are about your only choices, though there could be a ding and dent copy available from an online game shop somewhere.

It probably would. That being said, depending on where you live, it can be perfectly legal to print copyrighted material for personal use only. Usually, it isn't very cost effective to print for yourself though, so it is a better option to find a used copy anyway.

Craigslist, BGG auctions...

I don't think that it can be legal to print copyrighted material for personal use unless you own said material in the first place. It's often legal to make backups, but definitely not legal to print them off if you don't already own them. Also, it's not really for personal use unless you only play the game by yourself.

Actually, it all depends on where you live. "Fair Use" in the USA and GB makes it legal to copy protected material for non-commercial teaching purposes. This means it is basically illegal to make a personal copy for your own entertainment. The rest of the EU is sometimes a different story. Sweden is a fairly famous example by now since the relaxed copyright laws there is partly what has made the file sharing movement so strong. In Sweden it is definitely legal to borrow a copy of any copyrighted material from a friend and make a copy for yourself. Personal use is anything that doesn't involve selling the bootleg, including using/listening/playing with friends (although not in public). You might think this all sounds nuts but it works out in part thanks to the high costs for private persons of making single copies, and in part because there is an extra tax on recording material. I'm not sure but I think copyright laws are similarly relaxed in several central european countries.

While it may be legal to copy material in this way, it is something I would be very loath to do unless it is out of print and hard to find material. Mostly, I am against it because I think creators not only should be rewarded for their efforts but I think they need to be. With possibility comes responsibility.

Hmm, interesting.
