Obligation and Duty example

By RLogue177, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I wrote this up for my players. I thought you all might get some enjoyment as well. (Also to make sure I have the rules correct.)

George is running a Star Wars game. He knows the rebellion will feature heavily in the story arc he has in mind, but he wants to have all the selections open to the players, including Obligation as well as Duty. George decides to let his players pick which one each of their characters will use. And he mentions the third type, Morality, for anyone wanting to delve in the Force later on. He also describes to his players the themes he wants to explore in the campaign and let's them know that all of the careers and specializations from the Age of Rebellion and Edge of the Empire books are available for character creation. He also says that he wants to wait for the final version of the Force and Destiny core book to come out before allowing any of those options to be in the game. Lastly, George tells the group they'll start with a YT-1300 light freighter. Three of his players, Mark, Carrie, and Peter, all indicate they aren't concerned with the ownership and responsibilities of a spaceship, so the other player, Harrison, decides it belongs to his character alone.

Mark, who is playing a Human Ace (Pilot), chooses Obligation and ends up with Responsibility. He declares the responsibility is to the memory of his long-deceased father who was also a pilot - a great pilot by all accounts; he aspires to be the man his father was. Harrison loves the TV show Firefly and fancies his character a bit of Malcolm Reynolds, a bit of Wash, a bit of Kaylee, and a bit of Jayne all rolled into one. He is playing a Corellian Human Smuggler (Scoundrel, Rigger), and he decides he also wants an Obligation. His roll on the chart indicates a Debt. Harrison proclaims the debt is to a powerful Hutt crimelord and that he dumped a load of the Hutt's illegal spice when it was clear his ship was going to be inspected by customs agents. Peter is playing a Wookiee Technician (Mechanic). In his background story, he reveals that he owes Harrison's character a Wookiee life debt. To reflect this he chooses Obligation and asks George if he can pick Oath instead of rolling on the chart randomly. George agrees. Carrie, knowing George's plans to run a rebellion-centric campaign, chooses Duty and rolls on the chart. She ends up with Political Support. Giving it some thought, she decides to play a Diplomat (Ambassador, Politico) and works into her story that she is a princess in a noble house and that her father is a Senator in the Imperial Senate. She uses her family's connections and her "face" to work with the rebellion in secret.

Three of the characters will have Obligation, while the fourth will have Duty. Looking at the Starting Obligations chart on page 40 of the Edge of the Empire core book, George sees that Mark, Harrison, and Peter's characters will each start with 15 Obligation. He shows them the Additional Obligation chart and lets them know they have the option of gaining some extra starting XP and/or credits by increasing their starting Obligations. The most they can increase their Obligations is by 15 points each.

Mark wants to start the game with a T-16 Skyhopper airspeeder, so George tells him he can have an "okay" used one if he increases his Obligation by 15 for the extra 3,500 credits. Mark readily agrees and writes the Skyhopper onto his character sheet. Harrison quips, "oh yeah, that's useful... that'll be great for the dusting crops missions." Mark's total starting Obligation is 30. Harrison knows he's going to need a few extra XP since he's starting with two Specializations, so he opts for +15 XP at the cost of an additional 15 Obligation. He also has a total of 30. Peter is happy with the way his character is working out, so he opts to not increase his Obligation at all. George reminds him, however, that if he wants a Wookiee bowcaster, he's going to need more credits. Peter ends up with a total of 20 Obligation after adding 5 more and gaining an extra 1,000 credits. Between the three of them, the group will have to deal with an Obligation of 80.

Carrie is the only one of the group to want a direct connection to the rebellion and to have Duty. Looking at the Starting Duty chart in Age of Rebellion, George sees that Carrie will have 20 Duty to begin with. (He's had to house rule/guess that number, though, because the chart doesn't indicate how much a solo player would get.) George explains that whereas Obligation gets raised if you opt for more XP or credits, Duty gets lowered. He tells the group that during the campaign, the idea is to lower Obligation and raise Duty. Carrie looks at the Additional Duty chart and chooses to have -10 Duty for the additional 10 XP she'll have to spend. Her total Duty, and thus what the group has to work with, is 10.

George creates an Obligation and Duty chart for the players....

Oblig. Value Type Player/Character

1-30 Responsibility Mark/Luke

31-60 Debt Harrison/Han

61-80 Oath Peter/Chewbacca

Duty Value Type Player/Character

1-10 Political Support Carrie/Leia

At the beginning of the first gaming session, George rolls percentile dice for each of the two charts. On the Obligation chart, he rolls a 46. Harrison's Debt Obligation is triggered. For the entire session, Mark's, Peter's, and Carrie's characters all suffer a -1 to their Strain Thresholds, while Harrison's character has to deal with a -2 since it was his Obligation that triggered. On the Duty chart, George rolls a 62, which results in nothing being triggered.

Narratively, George adds a scene into the story where a bounty hunter, a Rodian named Greedo, accosts Harrison's character at an inconvenient moment. He looks through the adversary section in the Edge core book and decides Greedo is a Journeyman Bounty Hunter (Rival) just in case the encounter turns ugly. He also notes there are stats for Hutt Crimelord (Nemesis), Master Bounty Hunter (Nemesis), and Hired Thugs (Minions) for an additional scene in which the Hutt, Jabba, can remind Harrison of his debt to him.
