Custom Character Portrait

By Jaspor, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey folks,

I'm so happy with how this came out, I just had to share it. We commissioned an artist to draw a custom portrait of our Edge of the Empire crew, and it came out pretty great!

From left to right: Sluissi Mechanic, Droid Assassin, Nautolan Thief, Jawa Scout, Human Nightsister Force Sensitive Marauder, Duros Doctor.

Some more fun pictures in this gallery with earlier versions and different backgrounds:

Also, since people will likely ask for information on the artist, let me say that I've asked the artist if they are okay with me sharing their contact info for other potential work. Once I hear back from them that it's okay, I'll be happy to pass along the info in private messages. (I don't know for a fact that they're currently open to accepting new commissions, so out of respect to the artist, I want to get their permission to share their contact info.)

I also did a ton of research on artists and have that information compiled and would be willing to share. The style and price range varies greatly, so a lot depends on what you're looking for and what your budget looks like.

Anyways, just wanted to share since the group is super happy with how it came out. :)

LOVE it.

Fun stuff. :)

It looks great! I love the fact that the Internet brings gamers and artists (and gamer artists) together to do stuff like this.

Very nice. That Jawa looks like a bada--

Love the party road trip to visit some theme parks and attractions! it also sounds like an exciting bunch to play.

Pretty cool-- nice cartoony effect that isn't to childish. Message me I may be interested

Thanks for the feedback all!

The Jawa is awesome. He's also played well in social situations, doing some haggling and convincing like you'd expect from the species. Like when the crew bought a new ship, he convinced the salesman to throw in a full tank of gas before he even knew what hit him, lol. He also convinced the prison warden to allow the crew to have dinner in his private quarters for doing him a favor.

Haha yeah I had some fun with that. Seemed like the natural thing to do once we had a version of the image with a transparent background, lol.

Neat, just a heads up looks like they might have taken character designs from existing artwork:

Not that it diminishes it or anything, just thought it should be known if they didn't give the original artist credit (unless of course they're the same person, can't tell with the artists name of course).

I compared the artwork, and it certainly looks like one of them is very much inspired by the other, but the one by “Space Goblin” appears to be noticeably more detailed and well-shaded, compared to the other one (more flat and cartoony). The weapons and gear seems to be different, too.

If this was Disney and not Space Goblin, and this was artwork of a black-colored mouse that was standing on his hind feet, then the second artist would definitely be in trouble for copyright and trademark infringement.

It is, I mean as an Artist myself I've done very similar things by nabbing gear, armor, or random clothing pieces and using them on characters for my own groups portraits. There's nothing really wrong with it when you're learning or just doing it for fun, but if they're charging for this then you start to get into a somewhat uncomfortable situation.

I thought your username looked familiar! Like I said over on reddit, really got a chuckle on the Disneyland background.

I never did ask before, how long has this party been together? I assume the game is still going with this bunch?

As far as the Jawa goes, we gave the artist several references to draw from to pick and choose bits and pieces of the details we were looking for, and that Jawa drawing was one among several reference pieces we provided for that character. So yes, there's a similarity. :)

Haha, thanks! The party has been together since October 2013, so not quite a year and a half yet. And yes, still going strong. We've got 20+ sessions so far, and some big plans for the near future. If you're so inclined, you can read all the intimate details on the Obsidian Portal page linked in my signature. :)

Ah I see, well that's different then.

Boom. Big bada boom.

nice. tho i would prefer if i did it for my group there would be more shading and thinner lines

and how were they allowed to bring weapons to Disney?

They recently made a few friends on the inside. ;)
