Tick another enamoured fan of the brilliant Ghost in the Shell. Couldn't quite get into the TV series - the 'cutesy' sounding tanks I really found off putting.
Big ticks for Robotech and Stat Blazers too.
A few I love I'm surprised haven't been mentioned so far:
- Hellsing: predates the recent vampire fad. Good mix of supernatural, quirky action, with a semi-coherent plot. Through in some mild raunch and perplexing androgyny into the mix for the typical BSC japanese vibe.
- What about Hayao Miyazaki's films??? So much rich animation that almost overwhelms the senses. Plots that just run the edge of being too corny, yet work so well. Spirited Away at the top, Nausica, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle, among many others are great too.
- while strictly speaking not anime, the original Aeon Flux was fantastic - surreal, enigmatic, slightly erotic and just plain crazy at times. A work of genius, as the creator said in an interview, would never get funded by a commercial network like MTV these days. So disappointing the movie was so bad - well I guess it had one redeeming feature....
