What's your favorite anime show?

By Robin Graves, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Tick another enamoured fan of the brilliant Ghost in the Shell. Couldn't quite get into the TV series - the 'cutesy' sounding tanks I really found off putting.

Big ticks for Robotech and Stat Blazers too.

A few I love I'm surprised haven't been mentioned so far:

- Hellsing: predates the recent vampire fad. Good mix of supernatural, quirky action, with a semi-coherent plot. Through in some mild raunch and perplexing androgyny into the mix for the typical BSC japanese vibe.

- What about Hayao Miyazaki's films??? So much rich animation that almost overwhelms the senses. Plots that just run the edge of being too corny, yet work so well. Spirited Away at the top, Nausica, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle, among many others are great too.

- while strictly speaking not anime, the original Aeon Flux was fantastic - surreal, enigmatic, slightly erotic and just plain crazy at times. A work of genius, as the creator said in an interview, would never get funded by a commercial network like MTV these days. So disappointing the movie was so bad - well I guess it had one redeeming feature.... ;)

While i do like Hellsing (actualy more for Seras than Alucard), when it comes to vampires in anime i'll pick Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust. Beautifull art style and some great lines in the dub: "It's zombie time!" and "Come and get it zombies!" those always crack me up.

My fave Miyazaki film is "My neighbour Toroto." second one is Howls moving castle.

Anyone seen "Litte Witch Academia"? Best. Anime. Ever.

Bebop transcends anime. Hell, it transcends cartoons, maybe even television. Don't do it the disservice of lumping it in with a bunch of other garbage.

Well, my favourite Miyazaki is Porco Rosso. I find myself so relaxed and happy every time I see it. Maybe it's just the flying or the atmosphere and life at the Adria which was captured so well in this movie.

:)

I would put Nausicaa at the top. But That might be because with the possible exception of Lupin it was my first Mayazaki. For some reason despite my love of both Mayazaki and vintage planes i have yet to see Porco Rosso It is a mystery to me why i havent

I'll watch Porco Rosso when pigs fly... Oh wait.

But yeah I still have to watch it in full.

Spirited away is one I really enjoyed

Spaceship Yamato is pretty awesome

The old ones and I loved the newer one

I highly recommend parasite if Noone has watched it yet

It's on episode 17 or so on crunchyroll

Kind of horror but has some comedy aspects in it

They just made a live action movie in Japan as well

Based off a older Manga back when my wife was in high-school

Attack on titan again is worth a second mention

One thing I love about some anime are the introduction music, and I also think titans is the best

Knights of Sidonia - the sound and image design is superior to most of the animes out there and the story isn't half bad.

How has nobody said Samurai Champloo, but yea Bebop is the greatest

Yeah Champloo is awesome and Mugen is even more awesome!

One of my fave episodes was the one with the fight in the "sacred grass".

Cowboy Bebop for sure.

Read Or Die (NOT ROD:TV, could not get into that)

Code Geass

Code Geass

"Lelouch VI Britannia commands you!"

Azumanga daioh would probably be my personal all time favorite. Sailor moon and Ranma 1/2 also good very special places in my heart as they are what really introduced me to anime and the Japan in general...I was a mercury fan from the moment I laid eyes on her...ahem.

Seconded on those with taste who mentioned samurai champloo (freaking best soundtrack ever) and martian successor nadesico. Sadly no one has mention the irresponsible captain Tylor. That was one of the funniest amines I ever saw. Was also a big love hina fan in college.

The only animes I have see most of that I genuinely didn't like were fushugi yuugi and cowboy bebop...saw at least 2/3 of both and didn't really care for either...just not my style guess.

Should also mention that you should all see samurai 7 if you have not..awesome. The wife and I are currently watching barakaman which is ok so far.

But if I had to choose a best anime of all time period end of story?

Neon Genesis Evangelion. How has no one mentioned that yet?

Best miyazaki? Kikis delivery service.

Ah...this discussion kinda makes me wish I still lived over there...good times, good beer, good food, and beautiful women. TV was good too.

EDIT TO ADD: also he is my master was another favorite...hysterical...and I just can't get enough of izumi.

For some reason i never can get into Sailor moom. I figure it is because my "girls with superpowers kicking ass" needs are already taken care off with Pretty Cure. ( A lot of bright colors and girls, and power of friendship talk and- holy moses! did she just suplex a monster the size of king kong? I still don't like those faery companions and- whoooaaah! That punch! That would have taken out Goku!)

I got into anime trough french TV: Grandizer (Goldorak), Saint Seiya (Chevalier du zodiac), Fist of the North Star (Ken le survivant), Lum and a few others...

I like neon genesis, but it isn't my favorite. Mostly because I want to reach into the screen and slap Shinji every time I see him.

One more Nausicaa fan here. I saw the Warriors of the Wind dub when I was younger, and while it was nowhere near as good as the original, I remember that I quite enjoyed it then. And then I was able to afford to buy the comic book and that was incredible.

I can sympathize with that...he was a bit of a *****...

While it isnt my fav it is up there and most of the anime people I have known would have ranked it as the greatest anime of all time...most of them are comparing Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) to Evangelion thinking that could give it a run for its money...we will see...but i certainly like the main character more and Sasha gets me laughing everytime shes onscreen.

I don't know anybody who doesn't ...

I have never seen any NGE, and never will...

Everybody hates Shinji. Even Shinji. :)

I'll pick Evangelion over attack on titan any day. I find myself caring more for the characters* from Evangelion than I do for those of AoT. I do like the anime inspired cheeseburger :

Looks about as appetizing as a titan, yeah...

*Well actualy just Askua when it comes down to it.

I have never seen any NGE, and never will...

Your missing out then...

awesome anime...until the last 4 or so episodes where it goes off the deep end...but the first 2/3 are amazing

OOOHH Lotteria!! They had the best spicy tandoori chicken sandwich!!! I don't think they have it any more...they didn't last time I was there...I would try that burger...looks decidedly American and delicious

My coronaries clot all right by just looking at these monstrosities...!

I have never seen any NGE, and never will...

I honestly don't think so. I'm also not really into this "Mecha-Teens"-stuff.

The only stuff similar enough to NGE I watched was Sei Yushi Bismark (actually its vandalized version) Saber Rider , which was cult here in Germany due to its outstanding dubbing.

I would have watched Robotech, though, since their Mecha-Designs were converted for Battletech.

Not my favorite of all time, but I've been enjoying the last couple seasons of Space Dandy.
