What's your favorite anime show?

By Robin Graves, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Since I had such good responces to the "Western" one, and because i'm a huge anime fanboy, I've decided to ask you all:

What's your favorite anime or cartoon series/movie?

* And not everybody immediatly pick SW Rebels or Clone wars, because we're on an x-wing forum.ok? ;)

My favorites have changed over the years, so I'll list the classics that I still have on my bookshelf: Ghost in the Shell, Outlaw Star, and Oban Star-Racers. Love those stories.

Generator Gawl.

Ghost in the shell both the movies and the series, trigun, full metal panic, cowboy bebop, Martian successor nedesico.

Also recently watched attack on titan which I liked.

Pretty much anything by Reiji Matsumoto. Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock (but not the bloody awful cg one recently that was only loosely based on Matsumoto;'s character and they had the audacity to redesign the Arcadia) Galaxy Express etc. And One year war era Gundam (Original series, 0080, Gundam, 08th MS Team and MS Igloo) Area 88, Harmageddon, Dagger of Kamui

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (really, any Gundam that isn't SEED Destiny)

Slayers/Slayers Next/Slayers Try are also top list

For Western animation: Gargoyles

I like that one episode of South Park...

Speaking on Gundam... I'm finally finishing Stardust Memories now. I'm afraid I'm running out of UC stuff to watch!

Don't despair. Gundam Origins is here. The redone version of the original Gundam .
The movie has just been released in Japan. Also to be a TV show done with the same respect that Yamato 2199 showed to the original show....I think i might have posted this elsewhere.
Try to ignore the terrible dubbing. This is why i stick to subtitles.

Have you wtahced SB Yamato 2199? Awesomely animated. I'm watching captain Harlock now. I've also seen the CGI movie: It's a fine warhammer 40k movie but it ain't captain harlock! For my old school anime i got Grendizer (Goldorak) and getter robo wich has the abosulte best intro song ever.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (really, any Gundam that isn't SEED Destiny)

Ah ha ha, Poor Gundam SEED destiny, it really is the black seed of the gundam franchise. :)

I kinda liked SEED. But I'm more into Gundam Wing (thats the 1st gundam series i watched) and Gundam 00 (Halleluiah!)

star blazers 2199.. or space battle ship Yamato or what ever its called now.. I catch it on you tube..

Eh, the dubbing isn't bad. I've definitely heard far, far worse *cough*SEED*cough*

Wing was my gateway drug, as it were. :D Still holds a special place for me. I liked 00, but I didn't think it was as good as a lot of the others (Wing, original, Zeta, ZZ, X, 0083, 08th MS Team, for instance). (H)Alleluiah was definitely my favorite character, too.

Ive certainly heard worse dubbing but it was a bit iffy *L* I love 2199 It is how a revamp should be done. The new movie is out in Japan and should be available on DVD soon and the second series is in production.
The newest Harlock film looked like one big Final Fantasy cutscene and the characters were portrayed so wrongly.

Oh yes for pure space opera at its finest see Crusher Joe the movie (from 1983. not the later ova that was just ok ) but the original movie was pretty darn awesome with some of the best design work ever. And who could not be inspired by the Crusher theme

Here are a few I've been watching lately

Lucky star

Toriko

Cooking master boy

Kill la Kill ( not for the fanservice! I swear!)

Cross Ange (Not for the fanservice! I swear!)

Triniti Seven (Not for the fanservice, well maybe a bit...)

Ore, twintails ni narimasu (Not for the faservice because, you know...)

Pretty cure and lots of it, almost done with Happiness charge.

I have been spending a lot of time with the old Robotech Macross series and the Shadow movie. The new Veritech fighters look to be close enough for some cross contamination fertilization off the wall gaming soon. Just gotta get them Destroids painted up in proper Imperial colors.

Vandread is tied for my all time favorite. There are a few really awesomely moving episodes, and I love the space battles.

Fairy Tail, minus the filler, is my other. The arcs that stay true to the manga are incredible because the manga is incredible.

Mai Hime. A good runner up. The second half is pure awesome.

Gundam SEED would be my all time favourite, in no small part thanks to it being my first anime. Cowboy Bebop , Clannad , Romeo x Juliet , Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid and Fate/Zero would be up there, too, and I suspect Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works will join them unless the second half goes completely off the rails. So might a few other shows, if I ever actually make progress on my epic "To Watch" list.

Anime series?

My all time favorite is Harmony Gold's re-write of Macross(Robotech)got me into Anime. I love all of Macross and the re-writes.

Then I also like:

Gun Smith Cats

Slayers(all of it)
Claymore

.Hack//(all of them)

Samurai Champloo

Legendary Heroes

Sword Art Online

Cowboy Bebop

Fairy Tail

Inuyasha

Apple Seed

Bubble Gum Crysis

The Devil is a Part-Timer

Ghost in the Shell

Blue Seed

I just started watching Noragami and Knights of Sidonia.

I pretty much wrote down my favs but here goes.

In order most fav too least fav. Favs none the less

MLP:FIM (Including movies)

Robotech (Including the orignal limited release movie, RT2, and the two Shadow chronicles era movies.)

Final Fantasy VII movies are tied for 2nd place.

M.A.S.K.

Star Wars (Everything ever made in the animated medium, I dont feel like putting it in order.)

The Real Ghostbuster & Extreme Ghostbusters

Visonaries

M.I.B. Animated series

Sponge Bob

Guyver 2007

Venture Brothers

Guyver orignal

Slayers

Mega Man once upon a star

Mega Man (ruby spears)

As a side note I found "Super Adventure Rock Man" entertaining but bad at the same time. Its one of those things that happened only in the Jap Mega Man series (Rock Man) After the events of Mega Man 3 Dr. Wright (Dr. Light) whole heartedly forgives Dr. Wily of his past crimes, as does Rock Man and... "THE UNITED NATIONS." -_- The Earth is suffering from a massive EMF so powerful all organic and inorganic life will die off in a year or less.

So guess what the U.N. does? It sends in Dr. Wily by himself too the area where the pulses are comining from so he can save the world... They actully believed he would save the world... They were wrong... -_-

EEEkk!!!

Transforms G1 (Only stuff with Combaticons and sometimes Stunticons )

Macross Plus movie

Macross 2

Dark Wing Duck I guess. I havent seen it in ages I think Ive reached the end of my list.

Frozen. I like the artistic ice designes, the characters are decent and the music is good enough.

I just remembered BattleTech and Exosquad. They are at the least honorable mentions.

Edited by Black Knight Leader

How could i forget to mention Galaxy Rangers. Best non Japanese animated show ever

Death note be my top choice

Attack on titan is also high on my list

Watching parasite on crunchyroll right now

I thibk this will be in my top 5 anime.

Macross

Psycho pass was good

Fist of the north star was really good once you get through the first story arc

Aaaw, man:

1. Gargoyles

Shakespeare references, bullets, blood, death, a likeable and clever antagonist, developing storyline, drama, good dialogues and a terrific voice cast (apart from Marina Sirtis, which always sounded a little bit bland to me. They should have taken Gates MacFadden instead. Ah well).

This show had everything to make you feel respected as a viewer. I still like to watch it nowadays.

2. Ghost in the shell

Both the two movies and the SAC-Series. Everybody knows it. Everybody likes it. For a reason.

3. Legend of Galactic Heroes

If there's a space epic ever, this is the series to go. The starship battles are designed like napoleonic battles. 600 characters, all with distinct and believable motivations, actions and developments. Lots of talking and philosophy. And dying, heroically, casually or miserable.

It lost to the other two only, because it is not as easy to access as GitS and Gargoyles are, due to it only being available with english subtitles , its very slow pace and its overwhelming complexity. Not every ones cup of tea, I suppose.

4. Batman, the Animated series

Art deco, Film Noire, almost no happy endings, Lots of pain. Apart from the Joker - whom I found annoying and a bit overused in the series - very interesting bad guys. For me - the default Batman series which paved the way for a fundamental change in style for the entire DC Universe.

5. Galaxy Rangers

Loads and loads of characters. Techically an adventure and space horror series. Some character development. Fun dialogues. An entertaining ride.

6. Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Silly, over the top Space Opera. It's totally popcorn entertainment in my opinion but very fun to watch.

7. Master of the Universe 2002

This series was aimed for kids and had some annoying product placement episodes there, but it also had an interesting continuous storyline (which was cut short due to bad marketing of the toy line) and especially the Adam-He-Man issue was adressed properly. Skeletor was finally dreadful, the Snake Army dangerous and Hordaks looming presence could be felt over the series. The animation was good enough. Only the colour palette was to bright for the theme of the series in my opinion but that's the way series were at the start of the century...

8. Brave Star

For a filmation series it was pretty dark actually. The hero had a bloodthirsty sidekick, the villain inner depths, the world and milieu itself was quite hostile to its inhabitants. It was not only a sci-fi western but added also some neat victorian -cyberpunk into the mix. While the dub voice cast was low budget the sound effects were awesome. And there were not only people, but a child! dying (in a straight-up drug abuse related heart-wrenching episode), which was quite daring for a childrens series. I'd really love a grown-up reboot of it...

9. Captain Future

It's cult, campy, mysogynistic and totally all about the main character - who is some kind of Mary Sue. And everybody loves him. But it was also impressively violent for a series to be watched as saturdays morning cartoon around here and had interesting plots and ideas. So, yeah, I like it.

10. The Masters of Time

A restraint Moebius movie with a very nice twist in the end. A classic.

MOTU 2002 was indeed awesome, with a few exceptions ofcourse. Like you said, This time Adam is diffrent from He-man, rather than He-man wearing purple tights. King Randor is way more badass than in the ol' filmation series. And Skeletor, daium! Guy has some nice sword fighting moves. Holding his own against He-man AND king Randor at the same time. Nice.

But the star of the show for me is Evil-Lynn. I mean: Jeez how coem Skeletor is in charge and not her? One fight she does this magical blast and the next thing we see is Ram man and meck-neck falling from the skies... That's some dragonball Z style stuff right there!

I also agree with Marshall bravestarr! We didn't get the cartoon on tv but the action figures came with a very cool audiotape.

And yeah Thrity-Thirty is scary! (He even named his gun Sara Jane).

In no particular order;

Death Note

Fullmetal Alchemist

Gantz

Elfin Lied

Fullmetal Panic

Right now my wife and I have been watching One Piece

Overall I appreciate a good idea for a story moreso than the presentation of said story (hence Gantz and Elfin Lied making the list).
