Armada taking out the bulk?

By Surge4tw, in X-Wing

I will admit im not usper active ont his board, but love the information offered by everyone. But my question is... after recently seeing the information on FFGs "Star Wars: Armada", I was wondering if that means there will be no more larger ships for X-wing minis. Im sure there are atleast a few more large or epic ships to be released, but will there be any hope for more than that?

If the raider becomes the success it will probably be (already pre-ordered that **** ^_^ ), then you can probably count on seeing more

When it is all said and done I think each faction will end up with two huge ships.

One heavy firepower ship and one smaller support ship. I think the Empire will get the Gozanti as a support ship with minimal firepower. Who knows what scum will get. There are a ton of options out there.

They're also not limiting themselves to established material anymore. The Raided is the first FFG original ship we're seeing. It's a good bet we will see more, especially if the Raider is a commercial success for FFG.

I think the above is probably a reasonabl guess.

I was actually fairly convinced that 'armada' would end huge ships as they probably were not selling well.

I seem to have been wrong on that one :)

Very true, Im sure with episode 7 coming, that will probably be wave 9 next year, with a clear assortment of ships for all three factions. But im still hoping for more Epic scale ships. I know the bulk, size and cost is kinda a problem. But to be honest, Not allt he ships are 100% to scale, and thats fine for me. I just dont want a second buy in product to take potential from this line of ships.

That is a really good question. I think Epic play hasn't been as omnipresent as standard play so it hasn't been a major priority. Armada will so comfortably scratch that itch for capital ship warfare, so while I think people will be more likely to play Epic once both Imperial and Rebel have huge ships, and I'd wager we might see a Mandalorian cruiser or something for Scum to add one more, I think the focus would be on expanding standard play and leaving most capital ships to Armada.

I had the same feeling :\

A bit of a shame if that takes the course, but im optimistic with it all. There is still alot of room to grow.

It is also a matter of perspective. X-wing is the zoomed in view of the otherwise Birds's Eye Armada. Both have their place.

This is exactly what i thought too.

It makes no sense for a games company to produce two games that essentially replicate captial ship combat.

Not only are you wasting your games developers time but the stores can only dedicate 'x' amount of rack space or wall to FFG product so you probably have (as we did at GW) a limit to the amount of releases each range can have for store space purposes (its why lego make 'x' number of sets for city or space themes a year but you can find tons more online that are 'web only' as they cant expect stores to have the room to stock a 3ft by 3ft $400 'death star' set that they will probably never sell to a walk in customer).

I was expecting xwing to concentrate on small ship dogfights and gradually phase out epic play as a 'nice idea that didnt catch on' (shame if this does happen as i like cinematic, narrative and epic play far more than 100 point death match).

But as you say if you want star destoryers and corvettes then your 'fleet action' itch is probably going to be scratched by armada, if you want dogfighting its regular xwing

Epic play seems to be a sort of off halfway house which i'd think is difficult now for a games company to carve a place for in their catalogue.

I honestly thought they wouldnt do a huge imperial as hardly anyone i know has a tantive, my FLGS never seem to sell them as in the UK its £80. Its not an impulse or 'pocket money' buy. For the price of a CR90 you can get a really strong force for both factions and a core game or an amazing force for one faction. Its a hell of a lot of money to shell out on a ship you cant use in most 'pick up' games at a club or with someone you've met on a FB group to meet up and play wiht. You really need a close friend or fmaily gaming group who are ok with 'non standard' , 'lets give this a go' games.

But like i say the raider coming out means im gladly proved wrong, unless its an experiment to see if a competetive imperial huge ship will make epic more appealing? Ive pre ordererd mine any way :)

I agree with my fellows postings. We will likely see two EPIC Huge Ships for each faction and the rest will be in ARMADA.

I guess still being fairly new to the game I havent seen enough of the Large and Epic ships to say much on there play style.

But it is a little mroe njoyable in a mission or dog fight to be enaged in a 4 ship squad strategy as opposed to a single large or epic ship at your disposale.

Do not underestimate the fun of playing Large Ships.

;)

Huge Ships are another matter entirely...

:D

I'm hoping for two EPIC Huge for Imperial as well, the Raider being one of course. S&V may come out if it's successful but I'm okay either way.

X-Wing, to me at least, is a dog fighting game. Adding a couple of Huge/Epic ships is cool since these fighters can take them down :) . But Armada should be the capital ship combat game. Seeing 4 Epic/Huge may be fun once in a while but only if we have tons of fighters flying around.

I'm not sure how you simulate fighter screens without much longer playing boards. But maybe that's okay too since at our scale this is a close in combat and these are the fighters that got through the screens. Go Maarek Stele, bombers, Y and B-Wings.

Scum will most likely get the Hound's Tooth as one, I'm guessing. Figure the size roughly of the rebel transport packaged with a variant paint firespray maybe?

lol, I meant epic ships. I love playing with the large class ships. The Falcon has won me a few matches already, aswell as the Fire Spray.

I want to know if there's any op support for epic.

I'd love an Andrasta repaint...that thing would be hard to replicate well

In my view, epic is the "real" game. You've got an objective like "protect the Huge ship", and enough points to create dedicated roles for multi-ship forces. Ion weapons become devastating tools, and so it's often worth gambling with munitions to take out bombers ASAP.

For me, Huge ships don't represent a capital ship battle, but rather, the high end of a dogfight.

A store retailer acquaintance of mine once referred to the CR-90 as "a license to print money." As long as the epic ships make money, we will continue to see them in the game.

That said, I hope we don't see too many. I'm running short on storage space.

Considering the Raider was announced well after the Armada announcement, I'm willing to be Armada has zero impact on Epic releases.

However, do not expect to see a ton of Epic releases. 1-2 a year.

I'm not sure if I could afford even that much, lol.

However I really wouldn't minds seeing something inbetween. We have 2D counters that could be replaced such as the cargo containers and I'd love to see an asteroid base or small station.

DAT... but more than once in a while, with the BIGGIES.

i'd love to see a lot more epic ships for all factions, but I don't think we will. I would be up for 5 or 6 epics per faction, but like i said, i dont think we will see it.

I think the main drag on epic was the fact that only 1 faction had huge ships...that was their primary misstep...they should have packages the cr90 as playable for both sides...I think we would have seen more epic happen earlier if both factions had access to huges as they are at the heart of epic. I have no plans to get into armada...and I know there are many like me...it's dad easier for me to hack the occasional huge than take on ANOTHER minis game...getting into armada will be more expensive in the long run.

As for the slave 1 alternate getting packages with some scum epic (shudder). As much as I don't think they will package a large with a huge...the extreme wailing and gnashing of teeth that would happen would be hilariously epic...yeah I would like to see that! :-)
