Oh green dice

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing

It was a long shot, the TIE was behind an asteroid at range 2. Keyan had with modifiers made 3 hits, it was an undamaged TIE.

I rolled.

Blank. Blank. Blank. Blank.

Well ****.

I just had to share that story, I'm not blaming dice for losing that game (I blame me choosing to ram with oicunn rather than arc dodging on my losing that game).

God **** green dice.

I lost a match last night when a Bandit Squadron Pilot attacked my TIE fighter while obstructed at Range 2, and rolled crit/hit. I had 2 hit points and an evade token, rolled four eyeballs, and pulled a Direct Hit.

We worked it out later: he had an 8% chance of doing any damage at all, and he had to (a) roll a crit, and (b) pull a Direct Hit or Minor Explosion to kill me. That makes it something like a 1% chance, and if he hadn't killed me on that turn it I would have won the scenario we were playing on the following turn.

That's even worse, a blank is a blank but the eyeballs taunt you...

I feel drawn, somehow compelled to this thread...

What made it worse is that I was deliberately playing the odds: I had a 30% chance of no eyeballs but just a 15% chance of no evades, and knew I could still take a point of damage and live. I still think an evade token was the right choice, but yeah--those eyeballs are just bullies.

Yeah, I hear you on green dice's taunting nature. I've lost two games recently to the same person, in both games, Corran's green dice have been absolutely horrible. In the first game, I exchanged R1 fire against an Aggressor who had 2 hull, and Corran failed to kill him... on the return fire, Corran got 1 shot, hit hit crit crit vs. blank blank blank, draw a direct hit. In the second game, he ended up BARELY having R3 on my Corran with his Corran, 3F vs. 4 yielded 3 hits, double tap 3TL vs. 4 yielded 2 hits. Boom. To recount, 6Fv8 = 5 damage.

And like the suckers we are we come back for more....

Release Autothrusters already FFG (not that it'd helped your TIE).

Nothing can help against four blanks (or without focus 4 eyeballs). Some times dem green dice hate us.

This said : my target locking predator oicunn was having a field day with his red dice. And for that matter his range 3/obstructed greens. Shoulda took Ysanne

Had a big tournament at the FLGS over the weekend. I had was flying Fel.

He shot with Gold Squadron range 3 through the asteroid. 2 hits. I rolled 5 blanks.

Then the other gold squadron Ioned him to finish him off.

lol.

I ain't even mad. I think it's hilarious when that stuff happens.

But keep in mind, if someone's shooting at Fel range 3 through an asteroid, he's probably a gonner

It could be worse

Your opponent could be rolling consecutive 2-3 evades

That lost me a game in the 2nd round of a casual tournie when howl and 2 ties couldn't hit the enemy Academy pilot of the gods for 3 rounds. Lost on mod shortly after when Dark Curse was somehow unable to reproduce the feat, despite his ability drastically reducing the number of hits suffered.

And the Emerald Octahedrons Of Inevitable Betrayal claim another victim....

I have the solution to everyone's woes. Run a 2 Decimator list so you don't have to rely on green dice at all!

Oh, you might not (range 3, though) but you'll still have to face inevitably face them if you have an opponent

The worst was when I was playing 2 x 2 with some friends. They split their forces and we focused ours on one half. As we approached, the lone Phantom was at Range 3 and cloaked (5 green dice). The three E-wings fired.....and managed to kill the Phantom! He took 2 hits in the first shot. He took 1 from each of the others.

I think that's why I don't use Phantoms as my green die luck is pretty bad.

I think we should call them "blanks" and "blinks." (Because lord knows this game needs more cute nicknames and jargon )

The eyeballs already have a nickname. They're called "focus"

I had the opposite happen Friday night. I had 2 Ties, Howlrunner and a AP, getting attacked at range 3 or behind a rock, and managed to roll 15 evades out of 16 dice.

I've been saved by the bastards too.

Yesterday I could not help but roll an evade on my B-wing. When they are only able to plink one shield off at a time, it can keep that thing around for a while.

The 1% or less odds really mean nothing in this game. That's why we love it!

My Vessery 1 shotted wedge off the board in the first round of a game yesterday with a HLC. Vessery rolled his dice, two hits focus blank, used his free TL to reroll the focus and blank (had barrel rolled into range) and busted a double crit like a stud. Poor wedge double blanked despite having saved his focus and proceeded to draw a minor explosion. We both knew what was going to happen before my opponent even rolled. Should never have happened, but we were both amazed and highly amused. No mores pending 4 forwards from wedge I would imagine :)

I've also had green dice perform for me and it feels great! Nothing is more satisfying than a round of combat where you evade every shot and dish it out in return. But from my experience, it's better to count on the green dice failing you because more often than not, they will.

Indeed. But I will admit, that one time they perform on spec makes it all feel worthwhile.

My favourite for this has to be Dark Curse. I've had him essentially troll right across the front of a trio of B-wings, making rude gestures out of the top hatch as shot after shot just whips straight past him...

Nowhere near the most powerful ship in X-wing, but few are that annoying, especially against people whose lists are designed to spawn free focus tokens and target locks at will....

I hope that catches on :D

I also run Dark Curse and can totally relate. Love the visuals. I've played many games that ended up in a Dark Curse vs Fatty showdown and Dark Curse has even sealed the deal a couple times. He is definitely a tough cookie to crack with a focus or evade; without though, things start to get a little scary.

Heh, I was going to post this one, but you beat me to it.

Green dice also like to rub it in your face when you do not need them. A year or so ago, I had a Y-wing fire long range through an asteroid at Dark Curse with Stealth Device and an evade token. I got one hit; he rolled 6 evades.

That why X-Wings, TIE Defenders rock. You can never make the wrong decision between evade and focus so you are always "right". If your ship survives, well thats just in the dice
