minimum full playset cost as of Wave 5: $2,130

By Quarrel, in X-Wing

Woh, when i read that title i thought it was 'minimum cost of buying everything including wave 5' and I thought *no way* have a is spent over £1000 on x wing.

Then i looked at my collection and realised i've probably spent far too much!

Possibly over £900 if i work on each small ship being an average of £10

Each large as an average of £30

Tantive £80

Transport £40

Wow thats sobering.

Wow thats sobering.

I know. In another thread recently someone commented that they had about $1500 of x-wing stuff and I thought that was crazy lots for this game. Then I added up how much I have, and assuming I didn't forget anything, it came close to that, and I don't even think I have that big a collection.

incredibly misleading. why on earth do you need 5-6 of each ship? a "playset" should be at most 3-4 for most ships...5-6 for TIEs and E-wings.

using this same misleading formula for other miniatures games would show MUCH higher prices.

OP I dare you to do this for Malifaux or Warmachine...or God forbid 40k or WHFB.

all the factions...multiple boxes of each (even heroes based on how the OP has us getting 6 Decimators and 5 Firesprays)

hell just try it for ST:AW...oh wait you can't...1/3 of the ships are prizes

that's nothing price a good bicycle now days... actually that is the price of a good bike. and why do we need 5 or 6 of each ship because we can!! and Miniature market and cool stuff keep having deals of the day!!! and my wife thinks they are cool "trinkets" to get for me when she goes to Barnes & Nobel..and at 9-15 bucks a pop they aren't THAT expensive however i would NEVER show my wife this thread!! lol besides i would burn money waaay faster back in the days when i was chasing women and drinking lots of beer. Now THAT is expensive. I bet if somebody did a "study" on how much women "cost" that would be really sobering!!! ;)

I've recently given up drinking. This month alone the wife and i saved about £200.

That sounds like a lot but its not, once a week we met up with my mates who play xwing too (Mark and Kait, married as well) and we'd meet up at the local pub, have about five or six pints each and a cheesboard and bar snacks between about 2pm and midnight,

Worked out that Sian and I were spending at least £50 between us each week doing this, given our friends play xwing, warhmmer, rpgs etc etc... we just meet up and have supermarket pizza, bag of chips and dips etc round each other houses and game.

Still going to have a pint at someones wedding but its opened my eyes to the fact i was litterally pouring away hundreds of pounds a month in the pub

I feel a hell of a lot healthier too these days

So the point being a ten quid small ship is actually not that expensive but i just tallied up what i have to date (to be fair some of its the wifes) and to realise it was almost £1000... well i just didnt realise i was that invested in the game. And like others i dont consider myself to have an 'unneccesary' or overly large collection. its not like i have three falcons or 20 tie fighters. I've pretty much only got the max of what you can field in a 100 point list (excluding epic ships).

So a cap on 8 ties etc. I only have so many Interceptors because i wanted to fly three red royal guard ones, likewise four of my A wings are the blue type now from rebel aces so i can fly a 'blue squadron' so if i ever end up playing rebel A wings i'lll have a better instant recognition of which ones are mine at a glance.

I'd argue that the beer was making your soul healthier :P

You may have a point :)

I am in for WAY more then that at this point! WAY more!

I've spent about $700+ on this game, and I feel I have too many given that I'm switching factions.

I will admit that this game that I love is starting to get pretty expensive if I want to play ANYTHING possible in the game. In truth I don't know if I am going to buy into S&V. As stated Armada will be coming out the same time and I plan on spending a ton of money on that.

I need at least two starter sets and then one of every ship. (I don't want the cyborg goldfish ship but I think I have to get it) I also kinda like the idea of taking a fleet noting but Corvettes and Fighters. It just feels very early era Civil War to me. Sure when the MC80 comes out I will buy a ton of those, but not as many as when the Imperial Star Destroyer comes out.

I agree that I think this number is both pointless and misleading because of all the nonsense squads are being factored in, and actually harmful to bringing new players into the game by scaring them away with such a huge number.

You're never going to need 5 Decimators to build that 5 BSP + Ruthlessness list, or 5 Firesprays to build 5 BSP + Expose list. Even buying 5 Defenders and 3 Imperial Aces so you can build 5 BSP + Predator + Hull, which might be a decent list, is absurd. Anyone who really wants to try lists like these can do so for free on Vassal.

I added up the price of all the expansions I own, and I've spent $475 in the 2 years I've been playing this game, and I almost feel guilty about how much competitive options are open to me compared to what a brand new player has, more than I could ever try in the 2-3 games I get to play each week.

Edit: Wow, after reading other people's posts on how much they buy, I don't feel so bad on how much I've spent. Also helps me understand why so many people on these forums don't understand why other players don't want to spend $90 on a ship they'll never use. If you've got $1500 worth of ships, there's no way you're using everything you bought more than once, I play 2-3 games a week now and I struggle to use everything even once, so paying money for something you'll hardly ever use seems reasonable.

I just buy the ships that were in the original trilogy, the others don't interest me.

Two starter sets, 2 bombers and 2 y wings, and after that one of every expansion except for the corvette, and i have more than enough to keep me going for a long time!!

Sure you are restricted to what you have in some ways (for example, having only one shuttle means only one advanced sensors) but it's fun trying out different load outs and getting them to work. i don't do tournaments anyway, so don't need to optimise my builds for that.

As long as i'm havng fun it's all good :)

Squad Leader is unique so no need for 6 tie adv

I have 5.. but it is my favorite looking ship, I love the style and design.. I also repainted all of them.. lol

That said, I supply all the ships for one of my gaming groups, so I have to have it all.. I have more than most, and less than some.. I also want to be able to use ANY upgrade card.. the only ship I dont have is the Tantive IV... I dont do epic, and dont play rebels enough to need 3PO..

To each their own though, butnwhat you feel you need, but when talking to a possible new recruit.. let them use your stuff until they get hooked, then let them make a dent in their wallet.. lol

After looking at the list, I'd probably consider the extra dice and damage decks from the core set to be more of a requirement than the extra R5 Astromechs.

For people implying the OP is somehow a bad person for posting this number, notice that he makes no value judgement on it - just presents the number in and of itself. He doesn't say that it's good or bad.

Anyone reading the topic will realise that absolutely nobody needs to spend that much in order to play the game. No-one at all is going to buy multiple copies of large ships just so they can field X copies of Y crappy card.

Even if you did want to, as others have said, you'd be running into the hundreds of thousands for other systems like Warmachine or 40k. X-Wings financial footprint is very small. I think I've got one of every expansion, with a couple of pairs of some but no Falcon or Epic ships. As far as I'm concerned I can run any list I would ever want to and have spent something under £300. That's less than a single 40k army. To illustrate, my base Eldar list at 1800pts would run to over £300 and that's just a single army, with 1 list that can't change. Not *every* available model for two factions with a multitude of options.

While I seethe in envy of my opponents' collections, I have been getting by with around $180ish? worth of ships (well, tack on another 100 for the raider).

This is easily the cheapest miniature game I ever had the joy of investing in, the OP was just posting the amount of $ required to field literally everything this game has to offer.

Some people can have fun with a few ships, I like to be able to build any list I want, and change multiple times in a day of gaming..mi couldn't do that with 2oo invested.. heck.. I opened 4 core sets alone...

I build lists with fighters and bombers.. squints.. firesprays.. shuttles.. advanceds (read Vader) and squints... all advanced lists.. I rarely play my rebel forces, but I want upgrades, and if my opponent wants to fly the rebels I have whatever they need...

My one group, I have the game, others buy other games. I can let 4 ofnus play with enough ships that no one suffers for their favotite build, or ship.. we each do this differently, I can't understand those who only buy one side.. you lose out on half the game.. I don't get the people who only buy 1 of each.. how do you field multiple ships.. bombers should never be flown alone in any list.. nor Y wings.. and some people buy what their budget allows.. and thats ok.. you don't need my permission to do what you do... and as long as you are happy with what you do.. game on people... and try to recruit new players..

Just dont tell them it costs a lot to get into it though.. it really is inexpensive... on line sources keep it that way

The whole point of the miniatures game is that you don't need to have every ship and army composition but instead you can field your own and what you want to play and it is in a manner that pretty much no two games will ever be the same. Similar but not the same.

Lets take a super complicated game that gives you everything at the start like a regular board game, so from FFG I present to you Twilight Imperium. Now this is a board game with alot of diversity and customization that no two games are ever the same. However in order to accomplish that the rules are extensive, games are exhaustively long, and many players get confused or overwhelmed at the complexity of the game. End results is that is sits up on a shelf even and doesn't get touched at all. Through in the expansions and you get more rules and more complications.

In a miniature game you only have to be concern with the core rules and the expansions that you have. Not comfortable with the cloaking mechanisms the you really don't need to buy a phantom pack. Don't want to play rebel or scum. Then all you will need is the core and the ships for all that factions.

Some other miniature games like WarHorde Machines and Warhammer have many factions models that are completely customizable. So trying to obtain a full set from those games would be preposterous.

So you don't need to really get a full set. When people get into these games the first question is how much will it cost to play a single game or how much for a single army. The next level would be figuring out how much more would it cost to add to the collection in order to make a competitive list. So trying to get 100 points or 12 of each model is besides the point.

You really need 6 decimators for that awesome *sarcasm* ruthlessness card? You also get 2 copies of it so that would still be 3 anyway.

6 squad leader? It's unique.

that

This thread is just going to scare away and mislead new players.

UPDATE: Only four TIE Advanced are needed. I'd missed that Squad Leader was Unique.

That means the theoretical complete cost is only $2,100.
