Nobody expects the freighter

By OxygenWalrus, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I'm looking for a freighter to use a carrier/refuge in my group similar to in role to what the Wild Karrade is as I think having w full on capital ship is a bit too hard to do anything with mechanic and just how I'm running my adventures. I've had a look through the books at what is on offer and I quite like the armos modular from far horizons with all its modular bays so that makes the issue of customisation a lot easier but I was wondering if anyone who has more knowledge from beyond the ffg books had any cool suggestions for something to use.

Stat wise I was going to sacrifice a large amount of the cargo to make room for the ability to dock a small ship inside and to house additional facilities as well might beef up its base stats a big as well then use the had points to give it some a bit of defensive firepower ( I can say it's for defence right) then buy some security droids park it near some infrequently visited back water and go to it when needed

Anyone have any cool input feel free to share hopefully this will give other people some ideas as well!

The Armos is a huge ship with 150 officers and crew. You should be looking at silhouette 5 ships for freighters, which can be manned by a small crew. (Unless you're doing some Battlestar Galactica-type campaign with a ton of NPCs on one ship.) There was a unofficial guide on GSA, but the site appears to be gone. You can't go wrong with a Wayfarer with a retrofitted cargo bay. Speed 3 is decent for a silhouette 5 ship.

I was planning on doing either that or modifying another ship such as an acticon as they way I see it with such large transports is similar to similar to our modern container whips with a small crew to handle operations as most of the space is well space rather than say modern military ships were the crews are larger due to an increase of systems and need for additional roles

Slave circuit can eliminate many crew requirements, and droids can crew much of the rest. It would make perfect sense for an old CIS freighter (non-militarized).

Do you know of any such freighters happydaze so I can look into it?

Specifically, no. The CIS was HUGE and made use of a great many vessels, many of them not purpose-built. The slave circuit is in Stay on Target and can be applied to any ship. Buying droids to operate a ship is just a matter of the GM deciding on appropriate stats and cost along with how many you'd need.

For sil 5 ships, I'm always partial to the Gozanti. Good encumbrance, the ability to add a hanger bay, small crew complement and good weapons systems make it an all-around great ship upgrade from the basic freighter for most parties.

The traditional ships for EotE would be a Sil 4 freighter like the YT-1300 or YT-2400, or something comparable in the range of ~100k credits. The Ghtroc 720 (~112k credits) is nice in that it’s Sil 4, but it can carry 200 encumbrance of cargo, which is more than any other Sil 4 ship I know of.

In the more expensive range, I’m a fan of the ILH-KK Citadel-Class Light Freighter (~200k credits), which I think is largely under-rated for its performance and weapons loadout. The 4R3 is more powerful, but more expensive (~300k credits). The most expensive Sil 4 ship is the YV-929 (~380k credits), and while I think it’s a great ship, I think the value-for-money is not as good as some other options.

If you want to go with something that is Sil 5, then the next closest option I know of would be the Wayfarer (~120k credits), and you can kit out the cargo module pretty much however you want — I’ve seen mods that put a hangar bay in there, and all sorts of stuff. Another option could be the HT-2200 medium freighter (~140k credits). Or the GR-75 Medium Transport at ~180k credits.

The Gozanti Armed Transport is really nice at ~200k credits, but it might have more firepower, etc… than you want your PCs to have. The Xiytiar-Class Heavy Transport also costs ~200k credits, and has twice the cargo capacity of the Gozanti (2000 encumbrance vs. 1000). The Action VI Bulk Transport (~200k credits) is the odd one out, because it’s Sil 5, but it has ten times the cargo capacity of the Gozanti (10k encumbrance versus 1k).

The CSS-1 Corellian Star Shuttle is Sil 5, 1000 encumbrance cargo, and ~325k credits. If the players wanted to be a legit space line, that could be a good choice. The YZ-775 Medium Transport (~500k credits) would probably be the most expensive ship that I would be inclined to let PCs have, but it could also be a good choice.

Of course, there are various yachts and “star skiffs” that can be had in and around these same price ranges, if you want them to go with more passenger-oriented options.

And there are also patrol boats, if you want them to have something more heavily armed and less cargo.

The page at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/transportation/starships/?order_by=equipment__price&flattened=true is sorted by price, and if you click on the heading for Silhouette, you can sort by size.

I would recommend taking a good look at this table before making any final decisions, or coming up with a list of candidates to talk to your players about.

On reading people's comments (thanks for the input it has helped) And talking with the group move think ill go with the acticon as it has the size I need and no guns as this thing is not meant to be in the thick of things so they need to be careful as to where it goes I think 10000 encumbrance is just way to much in a sill 5 as while it is one of the largest the armos as well at sill 6 has 10000 so I think I'll reduce that down a lot and then again to account for all things that will take over raw cargo space. Out of curiosity I rembrr people talking about encumbrance and starships sizes before was there any good way to convert this as I think the hard points are looking to be spent of other things and I think people's collective input can be a better place to start from at times.

Again thanks for the input love the community around here
