does anyone else feel like flying just small based ships is the most fun way to play x-wing? i don't own and large base ships and for the most part don't fight any (although i was playing against a friend who was using the vt-49 earlier today) but it seems like it would be less fun since they tend to have turrets and thus don't require you to maneuver as carefully to make sure you will be able to shoot your enemy. thoughts?
flying only small based ships
Nah, both are fun. Large ships do take some getting used to - when I first got the Falcon, I hit so many asteroids.
I prefer games just with small base ships as well there's more skill involved, turrets remove alot of skill element reducing it to just rolling dice.
I pretty much only fly small based ships...except for my beloved shuttle. You'd have to pry that thing out of my cold, dead hands.
Yes and no
I feel the game gets more fun when you reach a certain critical mass of ships, enough where blocking your opponent (and not blocking yourself) are viable outcomes worth worrying about.
For small ships, I think it's around 5 and at least four. 3 small ship builds seem to take about as much space as the cancerous 2 (Wave 5 meta) and are far less concerned with precise flying and prediction, more with post maneuver course corrections. I do like maneuverability and it certainly has place in the game, but I don't find excessive maneuverability as fun as having one super-fast or potent ace and a solid core to run around.
Personally, I find the game most fun when I'm rocking
Soontir double Bounty Hunter (the size of the Firespray easily makes up for the lesser numbers)
Rebel 3 Bandits + 2 Rebel aces (Currently Biggs and super Wes w/engine)
7 Tie Fighter Swarm (V.I howl is my "ace," but really all Tie Fighters are incredibly manueverable for being throwaway ships so it balances out)
They hit the proper levels of volume and maneuverability for me
Edited by ficklegreendiceI love flying the Decimator mostly because of the idea of being an ambitious Imperial Officer with the Emperor's Hand aboard. It's not quite the same as zipping around in the A-Wing (my favorite ship of the game), but it's still got its thrills - especially when you're Oicunn, and you manage to ram two ships simultaneously through an asteroid field.

Gotta say, while I will always detest turrets, I have a soft spot for Oicuun and his giant brass balls.
No derping around the side-lines, no skirting the edges and just rolling dice, no running around like a pansy in a ship that looks like some feral space demon but acts like a wimp. No, the man sees his prey and he goes trampling through your squad to slay it.
The man (w/mara's help) breaks formations like a sledge-hammer to porcelain, and I love having to keep my poor squishy ace safe while also making sure the rest of the squadron don't get themselves crippled.
There's still a lot more room for abilities such as proximity mines and Oicuun, such reward low PS pilots with the ability to screw with higher PS ones because they had the courage/foresight/sheer insanity to bring themselves closer to the things that can obliterate them before they even get a shot ![]()

Only two have 360 1-3 turrets of the six large ships, those being the Decimator and Falcon. The Outrider technically does but is usually equipped with an HLC which gives it an arc-dodge zone at Range 1.
The Lambda (Imperial) flies like a brick and is forward arc only. It's also in the cost range of the X-wing.
The Firespray (Imperial/Scum) has a back arc but doesn't fly like a turret at all.
The Aggressor (Scum) flies like a giant interceptor and is front arc only.
Say what you will about turrets, but I don't think it's far to lump the Lambda, Firespray and Aggressor in the same box.
Edited by TIE PilotWhile the big ships have 360-degree firing arc, it does not mean that you shouldn't think about maneuvering your ship. You have to plan one or two moves ahead, where your ship will be next. This is because you can be in a perfect position in turn 2 but on the next turn, you will hit an asteroid no matter where you go.
Having a big ship with a big base means that it can potentially interfere with the maneuvers of your smaller ships, depending on pilot skill. Also, just because you are not maneuverable doesn't mean you shouldn't try to move out of as many firing arcs as possible. It takes time and practice, but it can be done. Remember, once the enemy kills the big ship, your chances of winning drop considerably, since the ship costed about half of the points (in a 100 pt. match). So it's always a great feeling to know that you can fire a free shot at an enemy ship without worrying about return fire.
Personally, I prefer my small ships, but flying the big ships are always fun. It's a change of pace whenever I'm planning my maneuvers and ways of attacking. It helps me think strategies from a new angle and coming up with new ideas always helps on improving my skills as a commander of a starship squadron.
Edited by 7falcon7wings7I typically fly small based ships, but like to strech my legs now and again and fly the big boys.. last tourney I used 3 firesprays and had a boat load of fun.. I also like to fly 3 buzzsaw Albino Manatees as well.. lots of fun those..
My current fun list is 2 BSPs and 2 Bombers, Jonus and a Scimitar... upgrades will vary on who I'm up against..
Firespray is my favorite large based ship. Scum firespray will be off the charts.
Should add also enjoy Empirial Bobba with navigator and VI for a good time.
Large base is not only turret ships, there is also the Shuttle, Firespray and soon enough the Aggressor.
So no, I don't think that flying only small base is the most fun way to play X-Wing. Large base ship take skills on their own to fly (turret ship included, albeit lower) that bring another dimension to the game. They are easier to hit and harder to maneuver in an asteroid field or a knife fight.
Imo, the most enjoyable fire-spray is the Bounty Hunter, preferably in multiples ![]()
We are starting a local tournament where you have 2 lists - a heavy and a light. The last one can only carry small base ships. That's actually quite nice and forces you into a build you normally wouldn't take.
As a bonus all current ships, but the Tie Bomber, are repressented at the tournament.
Edited by Scurvy LobsterThe only large based ships I fly are the Lambda Shuttle and the Firespray. Even then, it's been a while since I flew the Firespray. The Shuttle, though, can be fun. I do prefer small based ships. I've also thought of a tournament that restricted both YT's, the Decimator, and the Phantom. I like to call it X-wing Classic.
I do know that one of the reasons there have been so many of the big ships in my local area is that there have been a number of new players and it's about all they can get to get their lists up to 100 pts.
I resent this statement because I have a list that involves a Shuttle AND a Firespray ![]()

There are too many variables to declare "only small based ships the most fun". It really depends on your definition of fun. I think we can all agree that winning is fun and if that means playing a list that exploits arc dodging with a large base, turreted ship, then so be it. However, I do believe playing the same list repeatedly can get stale, even if you win all the time. Achieving a healthy balance between winning while playing a list you enjoy is when, I believe, you have the most fun.
Preferred play style plays a huge role in how people determine how much fun any particular list is. Some people enjoy flying in formation; it looks really cool and takes a good deal of practice to excel at. Others love it when they boost/barrel roll out of arc leaving your opponents in the dust with no shots. There are many play styles and in many cases people gravitate towards one or two.
To answer OP's question, I feel like the base size of a ship shouldn't determine how much fun you have. If you can build a viable list that suits your preferred play style, and win the majority of the time, then it shouldn't matter your ratio of small and large based ships.
When I play rebels, I exclusively play small based ships. And I almost always play rebels. I've thought about taking a title-less YT2400 w/ HLC, but I don't have enough experience with large based ships right now to play around with it at this time.
That said, when I play imps, which is typically as a SnG game, or against a newbie, I love playing both the Shuttle and the Firespray. Heh, after I won my first AIA tourney, the next day I took a double shuttle + firespray to another AIA (and came in 4th, yay free Z95) just because I wanted to be different.
Gotta love me some Shuttles! After watching (and falling to waay too many times) Phild0 and his shuttles, I've actually gotten pretty decent at running them myself and have learned a bit about how to fly against them, and how a shuttle can counter the common strategies against them.

The Decimator is my only large ship right now. First game I played with it I used Chiraneau, who also needs to be in medium/close range for his awesome ability to take effect, so I didn't mess around and drove him straight into the fray. I am in love with the VT-49, mainly because of how fun it is to just plow into enemy forms with Chiraneau and Oicunn, and send the enemy scrambling.
I will say, it was very hard to counter the VT-49 using only small Rebel ships. I am currently debating grabbing the YT-2400, or waiting for the Falcon to restock. I'm sure the right tactics will allow for some wins against it.

For now, I only play the Decimator in Epic setting. It is my admiral ship.
forgot those large ships without turrets :/ still though i shall probably always prefer my agile interceptors to large ships lol

you'd be amazed by how well they compliment each other
