I have a friend who's just getting into x-wing and I fly mainly imperials so I'm not sure what to recommend as he is going to fly rebels. what do you guys recommend? what if he wants to have a relatively cheap (irl money wise) squad? rebel aces and an x-wing? idk. let me know
starting as rebels
Eh...it's tough with the current state of things
how's it like over where you play? Where do you play? How competitive are people?
Now I personally ******* hate turrets for ruining the game's focus on maneuvering, but because they're the easiest ship to play and incredibly forgiving there's really nothing better for a new player
Start him off with the Falcon (good luck finding one, though) or the Yt-2400 imo. Find a good online retailer for discounts, grab the core set (required to play for tokens and stuff), and maybe a 2nd x-wing.
Yt-2400 and 2 Xs should be fairly decent to start
3-4x Y-Wings, but I'm biased. ![]()
Depends on his playstyle preference, really. If its maneuverability, go with As (Aces + normal blister, if possible), if tanks, go Ys or Bs. Those are my preferences for Rebels, at any rate.
If he has a favorite ship, focusing around that would be my big recommendation.

YT-2400 and an E-Wing. It get's better with cards from other expansions, but with only components from those two expansions and the core set, you are able to field a pretty decent list for not a lot of cash.
Other ships may be better investments for starting a collection that will have more variety in lists as you add to it but this will get him something decent out of the gate.
I'm a bit biased on it, but 3 named X-Wing pilots can do well, pilots belonging to Rogue squadron tend to do well for me, so starter and 2 X-Wing blisters
I guess Biggs walks the dogs (core set + 3 b-wing expansions) is still a very potent list for teaching newbies, but one phantom will tear it to pieces and probably walk him out of the game
B-Wing + Reb Aces is a good go. (Advanced Sensors you can proxy in friendly games, and that's the only upgrade B-Wings really need to be awesome).
Get 1 core set, plus 1 x wing,1 ewing, 2 bwings and 1-3 Z 95s. That's all you really need to get a few options going for rebels. HWks are weak and unnecessary for starting, and turret ships are expensive and getting the nerf bat anyways.
Meant to say Y wings are unnecessary as well starting out. Turret nerf and other issues IMO make it not a good starter ship.
B-wings are solid ships but they're really amazing with Advance Sensors, which comes with the E-wing, also a decent ship, but it'll eat up a third of your squad points.

is hwk also a bad thing to start with?

lol no
Interceptors becoming viable doesn't suddenly invalidate turrets
I do agree about HWKs, though. Way too finnicky for a new player.
lol yeah, I almost went to the FFG main page to see if the all of a sudden spoiled a new wave with some turret nerfs.
Your turret will still be slinging 3 or 4 dice anywhere it **** well pleases. Instead of one-shotting interceptors, you might have to shoot at them twice. Not what I call a nerf. Mild inconvenience maybe.

Probably, it's dial is one of the worst in the game so it'll be frustrating for someone new to get a handle on maneuvering it, and it's best used as a support ship, but a new player might not really know how to best utilize a support role in their squad.
Here's an easy gateway list. It is also only 2 additional expansions on top of the starter. Has multiple actions, deals with stress, has flanking potential, and formation flying.
Estimated cost $78 CAD ($35 CAD without starter cost).
Tycho Celchu — A-Wing 26
Push the Limit 3
Biggs Darklighter — X-Wing 25
Corran Horn — E-Wing 35
Outmaneuver 3
Advanced Sensors 3
Flechette Torpedoes 2
R7-T1 3
Edit: something your friend should be made aware of are the upgrade cards within each expansion. Depending on how they expect their play style to evolve. They should plan their choice of expansions along those lines especially if they're of the "I don't proxy" verity.
