New Player - store champs.

By kopmcginty, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm considering jumping in the deep end with a store champ that has slots in a couple of weeks.

Only picked up the game over Christmas so my options and experience are both limited. I've only played other new players so far but done well in those games. I'd like the experience of playing against better/more experienced people as I've found that's the quickest way to improve in other TT games.

As to lists, researching the current meta, I don't have great options for going against Super Dash or Phantoms etc but then, I have no idea if the local meta matches up to that anyway.

I have the Core set and for Rebels I have a second X wing, the Aces pack and a HWK. For Imperials a second TIe, Aces and Advanced. Not having the A, B or Tie Interceptor packs restricts my options even for the ships I do have.

I reckon I can make a better rebel than Imperial at this point though I don't have a preference of faction at this point. I'll be a wave or two out of date at least but at most I may be able to pick up one more expansion so that can't really be avoided.

I'm looking to make the most of what I already have plus thoughts towards what single purchase may be workable. The Falcon is of course unavailable at the moment but there seem to be plenty of 2400's available. Maybe an E wing?

I'm thinking along the lines of;

Farlander, PTL chardaan Farrell and two Rookies. This leaves 4 points for flavour.

Or a Wedge R2, Biggs, Blue squadron based list. That's 80 pts so plenty of room to upgrade or to squeeze in a basic A wing. Losing R2 could allow a more potent A wing. But means running 4 pretty much naked ships. Switching Biggs to a rookie leaves room to give Wedge a shield upgrade in addition to R2 and upgrade the Blue to Farlander with maybe Opportunist, E2 upgrade and Recon specialist.

Any advice for a newb is appreciated. Needless to say I'm not approaching this with any major expectations of placing well. It's just for the experience at this point with any wins on the day to be treated as a bonus.

You could try:

Keyan Farlander (29)

Push the Limits (3)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Jake Ferrell (24)

Chardaan Refit (-2)

It comes out to 100 points clean.

Some stuff on the list:

-It'll be a full 100 points so you'll lose out on initiative, which can be very important in competitive tournament play.

-You don't get optimum action economy from Jake, but you will be wanting to focus every turn with him anyway in order to benefit from his ability.

-Biggs will be your bullet magnet for Farlader and your Rookie while Jake can be your flanker.

-PtL on Farlander will trigger his ability more often and is especially useful when flying him in formation with Biggs.

I also recommend using the Yet Another X-Wing Squad Builder for mapping out your lists. I've been using it ever since I started playing X-Wing and it alone has made me a better player: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

Good luck!

For an Imperial build you can run a 5 ship swarm.

99 Points

29 points
Darth Vader PS9
14 points
Black Squadron Pilot #1 PS4
14 points
Black Squadron Pilot #2 PS4
21 points
Saber Squadron Pilot #1 PS4
21 points
Saber Squadron Pilot #2 PS4
Edit to explain the build.
99 points to get you a chance at getting initiative against a phantom build with Whisper.
If you have initiative then your swarm will be firing before any normal swarm which could consist of
4 Academy Pilots PS1 and 4 Obsidian Squadron Pilots PS3
or the rebel equivalent
4 Tala Squadron Z's PS4 and 4 Bandit Squadron Z's PS2
I ran something similar in a tournament last year and placed 3rd.

Flying four small relatively high value naked ships is a favorite strategy of mine. I love the variety you're pushing with the BAXX or XXBB lists.

Thanks guys. I have been using (Yet Another) but not sure if there is a good way to copy a list over to forum friendly format? A three ship build I've considered;

Total 99pts (or 100pts)

Wedge Antilles. 29

Swarm Tactics 2

R2-D2 4

Shield Upgrade 3

38pts

Keyan Farlander 29

Push the Limit 3

B wing/E2 1

Kyle Katarn 3

36pts

Rookie Pilot 21

Hull upgrade 3 (or proton Torpedo 4)

24pts (or 25pts)

There's not a huge amount going on for me to remember which is good. Swarm tactics to give the rookie a shot at actually being more than just extra hp. For this reason I also considered switching the hull for a torpedo. This makes the list 100pts though I don't know what chance the initiative bid has of doing anything? Keyan teamed with Kyle hoping to get a defensive focus after spending the stress to mitigate some incoming hits. However 1d is still only 1d so maybe not worth the 3pts?

Wedge is the obvious priority target so R2 and the shield upgrade to make that a tougher decision for my opponents. On swarm tactics I am presuming that once he has wedge's PS in the combat phase, I then generally shoot with him before wedge for token stripping?
