New tournament formats

By malladin.ben, in X-Wing

I've been itching to run my own tournaments for a while now. I go to a good number each year for warhammer and have added some X wing events to over 2014. In warhammer there's a lot of variety to the types of events run: different points limits, campaign events, different como packs and scoring systems. But in xwing there's only the standard 100 pt dogfight tournament format available.

I'm enjoying xwing much more than warhammer at the moment, and have decided to take the plunge and scratch that TO itch and run some xwing tournaments this year.

As I'm an independent tournament organiser I've decided to run events to shake things up a little from the 100pt dogfight, and was wondering what people's thoughts were on the different events I'm running.

The first event is the least different from FFG formats: Escalation, but with a 250 point final round of epic play (you can even try to squeeze a transport in at 150 points if you want).

The second event I'm calling "Mission 100": 5X 100pt games but each game uses a variant of one of FFG's published missions (4 of them are viable at 100 points from my play testing, with tweaks, and the other is the standard dogfight).

The final event is a campaign weekend, where each player chooses one if the premiere named pilots and has to build a list from generics and their named buddies. Over the weekend there's a whole host of different games: each player has 3 story games the develop a campaign story for their character, with the final battle being against their main nemesis, 2 epic games, and a new multi player format 'hero squad'.

More details are on my website: www.theblackorifice.co.uk

Anyway, I was wondering what you think about trying to shake up the tournament scene? Would you come to events like this?

cheerio,

Ben

Non-Epic, Two-Headed Giant would be cool. 2v2 at 100 points each. People pair up into teams and use 100 point lists to defeat another paired team.

Of course, faction continuity is still a must. But with this format, players are able to use lists and strategies that synergize with their partner. The more synergistic the lists are, the more successful players will be.

I've thought about doubles and team events too. I figured they'd need more players to be viable so if these go well I might run something along those lines later in the year.

I love your thoughts man. Particularly the using of the scenario's inside a tourney format. I have thought about trying to get something like that together. My thoughts were to have each player play both sides of the scenario and score points based on how they do. That way they don't even have to be balanced scenario's. After 2 or 4 rounds, break down to the top 2(based on points scored) and play one epic game. Or top 4 and play a teams epic game. Would be a lot of fun. Good luck running your tourney.

I think a random point build would shake things up.. or even random ship assignments!! would make things interesting.. dont know how one would implement it though...

Check out the outrider cup. That was a great team format event that you could modify for a team based event

There's an independent TO near me who has also added X-wing to his annual 40K event, and he's also running an "X-calation" event, but it starts at 60 points and ends at 150. Being new to the tournament scene myself, I don't know how standard this is, but I like the challenge.

What's your escalation point range?

I believe 60 - 150 is the standard escalation point range.

Those ideas look good. They should have some scenarios for tournaments, the 100 point death matches do get old. Team play could be amazing depending on how you ran it. Can't wait to hear about some of your results.

Good luck.
