Are there any older archetypes which can be updated, mimicked, or improved, with current generation upgrades?

yes and no. its basically the same thing, except Fat Han is just a lot stronger. Considerably.

I'd like to see ANYTHING other than the 4 lists bobbywhiskey just named. My continued interest in this game is banked heavily upon S&V actually shaking up the scene. If it only, say, adds one more build and it's otherwise the same old bullcrap, it'll be fair to say that this game has effectively reached its peak. That being said, I am hopeful that in addition to Scum fleets, Interceptors and TIE/Adv are going to make a splash, so it may get less boring and repetitive.

It's up to you to make the game fun. If your fun is solely contingent upon what other people are doing, maybe take up photography. That way all your attention is focused on what other people and things are doing.

I'd have to mess around with a squad builder for a while, but off the top of my head you're looking for something like B-Wing/E2 and Jan Ors giving "Biggs Walks the Dags" access to Evade, right? Is that better? I don't know, I've never really played those squads. But it's an update to an old archetype.

One build that I really like is "Devil Dogs" Garven, "Dutch", and Kyle and all their action sharing. The main improvement there has been the ability to squeeze in a fourth ship, namely a Bandit.

And of course, I, like many, await the glorious return of the Interceptor with the arrival of Autothrusters!

He literally said that if scum doesn't change the game he's out. He's relying on his opponents for his "fun" which is probably the worst way to ever partake in any hobby.

In all fairness this isn't a game that can be played without opponents. If he doesn't enjoy playing against the people in his area and he can't go elsewhere then he's basically screwed. My friend stopped playing Heroclix largely because he didn't like the people that he played against and couldn't get any of his friends interested.

Back on topic now.

The TIE swarm doesn't seem to have changed much, since it still largely comes down to whether you have a flanker and who it is. So basically, it comes down to whether your list has Backstabber or not.

Han Shoots First as I remember it was slightly more aggressive than Fat Han. HSF, in it's earliest form usually ran Gunner and sometimes Marksmanship with the goal of killing a ship with every shot. Fat Han seems more interested in achieving immortality and waiting for you to die. I could be mistaken there, I was pretty new when Han Shoots First was a thing and it kind of faded away shortly after I started.

Triple Firespray probably still doesn't work. I don't think this list can really improve with new releases because it clocks in at 99 points and therefore can't really do anything with any new stuff that comes out. The Firespray is in for a glorious return when new Boba Fett lands but I think we all know that.

There might be some possibilities for a new spin on Biggs Walks the Dogs. Maybe something with Wedge or Keyan to draw fire instead of Biggs? I don't know, I'm still trying to wrap my head around proper use of the B-Wing. I can fly them just fine but whenever I make a list with them I somehow convince myself to make "just this little change" until I've got no B-Wings and there's named pilots everywhere. Tried to make a list around Keyan Farlander and somehow built a list with Chewbacca and Garven. True story.

I've got a fondness for playing variants of the Three Amigos. I typically drop Luke and replace him with Corran, in a list I've nicknamed the Rebel Sledgehammer. Almost every list I build with Wedge ends up including Biggs, and by then I'm pretty hard pressed not to end up playing three ships because I don't trust Z-95s to handle anything with more than two agility. I've also seen a version of this that uses Keyan.

I think one archtype not touched on yet is control lists. There's way more options than ever, with more coming and being able to have multiple ion and/or stress delivery mechanics in a single list is a great way to lock down certain builds, especially the 2-ship builds we've been seeing lately. If you're reducing the effectiveness of half a players list by adding a single stress a turn then it's easily worth it.

I'm looking forward to the new Scyks as they make Ion cannons, and to a lesser extent Flechette cannons (which are only really good when combined with Ions since they only give out 1 stress), even cheaper to put on the board. Sure a turret might still be able to fire if ion'd but it now has to worry more about where it's facing or where the asteroids are since there's a decent chance it's going to get stressed and ion'd when you have 4 ion cannons and 1 flechette on the board (or 3 Blues + ion & a Gold with R3 and ICT).

Between Proton Rockets and Munitions Failsafe, having low-skilled pilots with a single round of high-damage is more viable than ever.

Ya, I think once we see the TIE Adv make a comeback we'll start to see Proton Rockets on them since they don't have the surplus cost the A-wing suffers by not being able to use Refit as well. Even though they don't necessarily mesh well with ATC, they'll be good at bringing down shields so that the crits can start going through.

Oh, that's a good one. I think it's relatively new, though, as there wasn't much ion/stress stuff at the start. A friend of mine plays "Panic Attack" and I honestly worry about facing it with every list I make (though I somehow beat it with an Int, Shuttle, and Defender):

3x Blue + BW/E2 + Tactician

Gold + Ion Turret + R3A2

I really think a strong or well-played control list can beat anything (it's one reason I'm not afraid to run double Ion Turrets in my "Devil Dogs" build...that and I tend to play fast to make 60-min play times less of an issue for low damage output). I look forward to Aggressor control with the Cannon-Gunner IG88 and Flechette/Ion Cannons on both IG2000s. I also think double-IGs will be able to dismantle Fat Han + escorts.

With shield regen, you can chew up and spit out Han's escorts while Autothrusters keeps the man himself at bay. When targeting Han, you can have one IG88 Flechette and one Ion, then next turn do the same thing. After the second round of shooting, Han will be affected by the Ion and stressed. From that point on, since he can't clear the stress, double Ion and walk him off whichever edge he's pointed toward.

But then this is kinda off topic as it's not really an update to an archetype as it is a whole new one (though if you stretch you can call it updated control). (EDIT: This should help put R2ShihTzu's mind at ease, too. )

When playing I tend to avoid the common power-builds just to test things out as I am new to the game.

I tried a list with biggs, wedge with swarm tactics, and Ten-numb with Veteran instincts and Luke as Crew.

That stuff just blew Echo, Rexler Brath and Turr Phennir off the table. Pretty fun.

I also find Boba fett with just a gunner upgrade to be a great investment

Incorrect analysis on the basis of my post (beyond the fact that we are all reliant upon our opponents in a social game). My point is quite simply that the game is extremely stale in the competitive scene. Look no further than the tournament reports to see that these small handfuls of lists are DOMINATING the high placement. That is troubling and boring when anything but 3-4 archetypes are successful. Blame it on netlisting if you want, but the results stand. I play anything but these lists (as do a good group of friends that I play with), but guess what's at every tournament? Win or lose, playing the same lists over and over is boring. That's why S&V needs to mix it up. If tournaments remain stagnant after this large of an investment of new ships, then the game IS fundamentally broken in some way that cannot be readily fixed with a steady trickle of retroactive titles. If it does shake it up, then I will have more faith and interest in the game and the diversity will take care of itself. That's why Scum is important.
