Will Debris fields eventually be legal on all tournaments?

By ForceM, in X-Wing

I know this question has already been posed, but in the most recent tournament rules i could find they still talk only about asteroids, and i didn't want to necro a thread here.

I know on some tournaments the Debris fields have been used, but i ask myself why FFG does not finally just legalise the Debris on any tournament. After all even if you didn't buy Wave 5 you could just bring your asteroids to the tournament and put 3 of those on the table when its his turn, while your opponent could choose asteroids or debris if he has them.

So does anyone have news on this?

That's what i found in the Rules about it:

"The player with initiative places the six unique asteroid tokens from his
core set next to the play area. He chooses one of these asteroid tokens
and places it into the play area. Then, his opponent chooses one of the
remaining asteroid tokens and places it into the play area. The players
continue to alternate until all six tokens have been placed. An asteroid
token cannot be placed at Range 1–2 of any edge of the play area or at
Range 1 of another asteroid token."

I doubt it will change anytime soon. Debris don't come with the core set and they favor certain ships more than asteroids do.

Well they can't say it is a distribution thing this time. Put the rules into the FAQ and then they could do as i proposed: The person that does not have them on a tournament just poses 3 of his asteroids while the guy that has them puts his debris down if he so chooses.

They expect people to read the FAQ anyway, so nobody could say it's unfair.

The way the main rules are written means that debris fields can be used in just about any battle outside of certain scenarios. I find it strange that the tournament rules would be different.

Yes, but read the paragraph i quoted in the first post... Inalso find it a bit illogical because when they came out i thought the intention would exactly be to use them in tournaments to add some diversity! But now we are nearly wave 6 and nothing new!

I thought the wave so expansions said in their rules books that a player may substitute debris for astroids?

With all the battles that have been waged over the control of six asteroids, you'd think that any given cluster of six asteroids *would* have debris fields around them.

Should add Debris Fields when you lose ships... HMM? HMM?

We add debris fields when a ship is destroyed and the last hit is a critical direct hit.

It can really be fun! Put some debris in weird locations and sometimes a ship that destroys another flies through it.

Fun stuff!

I would like the option to use Asteroids or Debris Fields (or whatever new obstacles they add).

Maybe they're waiting to see how Dash handles wave 6 and Vader to decide.

I want the option to use any 6 obstacles could be 3 asteroids or 3 debris, or any combination. Or a Large ship obstacle which counts as 3.

I would help versus the current meta too, because I really don't mind flying through debris to get that perfect shot, but asteroids are another matter.

Also, they should let each player bring up to 3 obstacle or 1 large ship. They would help versus certain builds, I would love to have the strategy option of asteroids and different types for your squad.

Well i believe most players would have no problem to use debris at least in any game. It would just add to the fun. And that's exactly why i don't get why they are not doing it!

We've been using 3 rounds and 3 debris clouds it's been fun watching my mates stress them selves.

Good debris placement could hamper a phantoms attack run.

Agree. Also, they cannot hide behind Debris, cause frankly I will take the risk to fly through it every time, it is will give me another chance to target them

but i ask myself why FFG does not finally just legalise the Debris on any tournament.

Perhaps because Debris Fields have only been out for a short time and they haven't gotten to it yet. After all, its not like they have been available for a couple years and there have been multiple updates to the tourney rules since then. Give them some time. I would be surprised if the next update to the tournament rules (the first update since debris fields were released) doesn't address them in some fashion.

This is a good idea...I could get behind this...on the condition that the huge ship brought coincides with the faction that player is playing...if no huge has been released for that faction them they should have access to the Corvette as I could see any faction feasibly using that

I'm pretty baffled that they haven't added them yet.

Only thing I can think of is all players won't have access to them. It would require all players to buy at least Core set and Wave 5 ships. I can definitely understand this.

In our casual games we typically throw out a mix od debris and asteroids. In the last tourney I was in a coupke tables had debris fields and no one seemed to mind, especially when they found out you can still shoot off of them.. and no one minds a little stress ... right? Lol

The main question to ask is this....does it favor any one type of build?

If we put in debris and huge ships as obstacles, could a swarm player pick the huge, throw it in the corner, and gain an

advantage? Would that type of setup also help a phantom? Does debris help Dash?

More to the point...will it weaken or strengthen the current popular meta of large base turrets and phantoms?

Either way...I dig variety. But game balance for tourney play should be the primary concern as to weather they are allowed.

As far as fairness to a player who does not have the components.......to me it would be the same as running a phantom against a player who has not bought that ship. Or running 3po against a player who did not buy the corvette.

stuff

Those are indeed important questions, but it should be noted that, even if they do, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Bringing 3 pieces of terrain that are an advantage to your squad would just be another facet of squad building. As long as the degree of effect is not too extreme.

There's a scenario rule for just that, comes with the Decimator. :)

I don't think the issue is that some builds do better than others, it's that Debris do not impact the factions equally. Debris clouds favor Rebels. Rebels are impacted less by just flying through debris clouds due to their higher number of sheilds. There's only a one in eight chance that they'd take any damage and if they do they are just going to lose a shield.

On top of that they have several pilots that aren't bothered much by flying through or parking on debris clouds. Tycho and Dash are can almost zip through them with impunity and Keyan and Ibitsam are made stronger by flying through them and since they can take Advanced Sensor, they don't have to worry about action loss. In the combat phase is no realy downside to being parked on an debris field, so it's in Dash's best interest when out numbered to just park on one and get the extra defense die.

Vrill does more damage if his target hits a debris cloud.

The only Imperial ship that can benefit from Debris clouds is Soontir Fel but he is so action dependant and susceptible crits it makes no sense to have him risk going through Debris.

As Forgottenlore says, there hasn't been an update to the tournament rules since the Wave 5 release. If say that's why debris clouds aren't tourney-legal yet.

Tournament rules and FAQ were last updated on October 20. There was also an update before that, that was also after the rules for the tokens were announced. Considering these things have essentially been around since gencon it is a bit surprising.
