Rerolls

By Darthfish, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Need a little help here.

Kavil with a blaster turret, r4 agromech, and predator is firing at tarn mason with R7. Range is 2

He rolls 2 hits and 2 blanks, spends his focus to fire but gets a target lock from the droids ability.

Tarn gets a target lock before the dice are rolled when he is declared the target of the attack. Now, if he chose to spend the lock to force the attacker to reroll any and all dice, he would do so now, as the defender modifies attack dice before the attacker, correct?

2 questions here: in the rule book it says that dice that are rerolled once cannot be rerolled again, so does that mean that if tarn forces the attacker to reroll the 2 hits, that the attacker cannot reroll them by spending his target lock?

To continue with my example, tarn spends his target lock to force Kavil to reroll the 2 hits. The reroll produces 2 eyes, so the attack dice now show 2 blanks and 2 eyes.

I assume that Kavil may now spend his target lock to reroll them all, as he does not have a focus, having spent it to fire the turret. So he spends the lock and rerolls all 4 dice, producing again, 2 hits, an eye, and a blank. Can he now use predator to reroll 1 die again? Or can he not do that since he already rerolled once with his TL?

Thanks for the help. I am kind of thinking that predator may be useless for Kavil with this build

No individual die can be rerolled more than once. So once Tarn has rerolled the 2 booms, those 2 dice cannot be rerolled, but the 2 blanks could still be, if Kavil wanted to spend the TL to reroll 2 dice.

That should cover the TL and Predator question as well.

You can only reroll dice once. Once an ability causes a die to reroll no ability can make it reroll again. The person not rolling the dice always modifies them before the person rolling them does.

Kavil fires his turret and rolls HIT, HIT, EYEBALL, BLANK

Tarn spends his TL to force Kavil to reroll everything but the BLANK.

Kavil rolls HIT, BLANK, EYEBALL - He can not reroll these using TL, Predator, or anything else. He may modify them with a focus token or an ability that changes a result.

Kavil now has HIT, EYEBALL, BLANK, BLANK.

He spends a TL and can only reroll the die that was BLANK on his initial roll.

He gets an EYEBALL.

He spends a Focus token to end up with HIT, HIT, HIT, BLANK.

Tarn wonders how in the hell Kavil ended up with all those focus tokens.

Copied from the wiki:

  1. Declare Target - The attacker chooses a target. An attack consists of firing a Primary weapon OR a Secondary weapon, not both.
  2. Roll Attack Dice - The attacker rolls attack dice equal to the weapon's value (the Red number). For primary attacks made at Range 1, add one additional die.
  3. Modify Attack Dice - Players may spend tokens and resolve abilities that modify attack dice. The order for modifications is the following:
    • First immediate effect (for example: Heavy Laser Cannon)
    • Second the Defender (for example: Elusiveness)
    • Third the Attacker; (for example; Target Lock, Focus, ...).
  4. Roll Defense Dice - The defender rolls defense dice equal to the ship's Agility (green number). For primary attacks made at Range 3 add 1 Defense die.
  5. Modify Defense Dice -Players may spend tokens and resolve abilities that modify defense dice. The order for modifications is the following:
    • First immediate effect (for example: Ibtisam).
    • Second the Attacker (for example: Opportunist).
    • Third the Defender (for example; Evade Tokens, Focus, ...).
  6. Compare Results - Compare the attack and defense dice to see if the defender was hit, and how much damage is dealt. For each Evade result remove one Hit or Critical Hit result from the attack roll. All Hit results must be canceled before any Critical Hit results may be canceled. If there is
  7. Deal Damage - The defender loses shield tokens / receives damage cards. (Related topic: Damage)

To answer question 1) If a defender forces the attacker to reroll dice the attack cannot then reroll those dice again.

Thanks, that clarifies things. I did not think the attacker could use TL and then predator on the same dice but I did not realize that R7 would prevent the attacker from rerolling. That makes his ability even better

It does although it is still a gamble as spending the TL just has a 4/8 chance to turn a [boom] or [kaboom] into an [eye] or [blank] while it also has a chance to turn the [boom] or anything else rerolled into a [kaboom] which may not be favorable. If the attacker still has a Focus token then rerolling may be even more questionable.

It's usually in your favour to force a reroll of all hits and crits, or everything except blanks if they have a focus.

In saying that, I did have one game where I had my opponent reroll 4 hits and he rolled 1 hit and 3 crits...

The dice should be in your favor although they aren't always. With that said if they roll 4 hits you usually have nothing to lose by having them reroll the attack although the dice gods definitely went amok that time.

I guess my main point is that without some way to get a free TL to spend with R7 I don't think that droid is something that should ever see serious consideration. Tarn is PERFECT for it because he can get the TL when attacked and turn around and spend that TL using R7.
