Well it kind of makes sense, (apart from the core kit which has been in production for ages, but then maybe they were waiting on the ships if they just bulk made them for the expansions at the same time.

The fighters are really just a stand with the fighter on top, some cardboard circles and a few cards, so should be very quick to make

I would bet highly automated because you dont see mistakes that would happen if you have a bunch of hand painting. Hand painting would result in being at the printers for a very long time while automated they probably can print out a massive batch of models within a few days. Like how many thousands of tie fighters can the printer make for the xwing game per hour.

The exact process though would still be interesting to know. Do they assemble then paint, paint then assemble, or paint as the parts are made then assemble?
