Worst start to a game. Ever.

By Khyros, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So, I was playing a casual game last night against a player who's relatively new, so I decided to play a SnG list that I would never take seriously. It's fun to every now and then do that. I ended up going with:

Jan w/ Blaster, Kyle, Predator

Keyan w/ HLC, PTL, B/E2, Lando

Green w/ PTL, LW, APT, CR

There's obviously some synergy here - Jan stresses herself to make Keyan's shot 5 dice, removes the stress to get the focus from Kyle to fire the blaster, can take a focus action herself to modify it, and even use predator as a pseudo TL, and as insurance for when she's blocked due to her predictable movement.

Keyan uses PTL to stress himself to use his ability, but often times there aren't 2 actions he wants to take, so I put Lando there, so he can Lando + PTL TL... Heck, I might get lucky and get a few evades out of it =P.

And then the Green is a Green with PTL, but a little bit better than that due to LW. I had 2 points left over and didn't really know what to do with them, so LW it was.

So, that was the game plan at least. But the very first turn, Jan gets hit by a PS10 Boba HLC with a Crit Hit Hit Blank (he TL'd and rerolled to get the crit). She rolls Blank Evade, loses a shield, and draws injured pilot... There goes her ability, her primary way to stress herself (and therefore Kyle essentially), her predator reroll, and her action economy with the blaster turret. I cannot think of a single worse crit to take than that for Jan, and this list in general. At that point, Jan was a 35 point dead weight ship.

But wait! It get's better. Keyan is quickly focused down to 2 hull, and draws the Damaged Sensor Array, so now he can't PTL to stress himself to use HIS ability. He survived a few more turns off of just Lando, but in the process, drew a Munitions Failure, and had to discard his HLC. Luckily, he was quickly put to death after that.

And then the poor little Green A wing was left dealing with a 1 hull Boba, 1 Hull Howl, and two untouched Academies. The Green though was up to the task, taking out Howl while causing bumps with Boba and arc dodging the APs. And then running away from the APs, and eventually trading R3 shots with a K turned Boba, where LW both saved him damage (as well as the E token) and caused the 2nd hit to turn up that got through and finally killed Boba.

A few turns later, I did a 5K while an AP did a 3K, trading R3 shots (the other one wasn't close). I roll Hit Focus on attack, which was easily avoided with 4 dice, while he rolls Hit Crit, and I roll Blank, Focus Focus Focus, but don't worry, I reroll the blank with LW for... Blank. I take off the last shield and deal myself a pointless crit. After a few more rounds of maneuvering, I kill the first TIE without taking any more damage (LW saved me twice because I rolled 0 evades both times to his 2 hits, and LW rerolled into 1 evade + token). I lined up a R1 shot on the remaining TIE (who only had 2 hull), and roll Hit Focus Blank, reroll with LW for another blank, and then spend the focus token. He rolls Evade Focus Blank, and chooses to take the 1 damage. On the return fire, he rolls crit focus blank, and spends the token, I roll Focus Focus Blank, reroll the blank with LW for another focus, and even with my Evade token, I end up taking the 1 crit and dying.

It was an awesome finish to kinda a stupid game. I love playing A wings and know how dangerous they are in the end game (especially against lower PS non-turret ships), so I wasn't surprised the one Green A wing almost took out the entire list. But those silly green dice only rolling 2 evades over 17 rolls finally caught up to me :(

Has anyone else had a worse start to a game than above?

...I had my opponent say that my ships bumped each other.

they were set up one behind another and each did the same action (a 3 forward I think).

we had to call a judge to straighten it out.

so...not as bad as getting slaughtered first turn but it the rest of my game was even less fun...I think the judge was called 3 times all together...I eventually just gave up trying to have a good time and just played.

If Boba was using an HLC that first turn there shouldn't be any crits, yes?

Nevermind... I skimmed the sentence first go round.

Nice batreps would have loved to have seen that one. the worst start I saw was when my opponent did a stop with the shuttle first turn then revealed a another red turn the next Opps so he handed the dial I was kind I gave him a 1 green bank to clear the stress and if he hadn't put his shuttle so close to the board edge it would have stayed on the board

I haven't had a start like that, but in a 5 round tournament I played a 3 bomber list with prox mines. I dropped 11 prox mines over the 5 rounds. 2 of those were on top of whisper, who had taken a hit earlier. both times I rolled hit, focus, blank. in fact, the only time I rolled more than 1 hit with my prox mines was when I purposefully ran one over with a bomber to get a shot on a 1 hull Dash. that was of course hit, hit, hit.

We are currently accepting bids for a lucrative contract supplying proximity mines to the Imperial Navy. Our former supplier has met with a tragic accident.

2nd game on Sunday's tournament

Soontir, double Bounty Hunter versus Fattie Han and Corran

The first turn we could draw fire was set-up as such:

Han bumped into a Bounty Hunter, range 1 of the other (no action, obv)

Corran (focus) has range 2 of the Bounty Hunter Han bumped into

Soontir (Focus) has Corran range 1

Both Hunters are focused

When the dust settled, Corran had lost his shields and Han lost 1

Meanwhile, Han took 4 shields off of the Hunter he had a shot on and Corran took 6 damage off the other. Absolutely perfect rolls (to be fair, Corran's 6 damage was really 5 one of which was a direct hit crit...) and absolutely perfect green dice blanks.

**** felt stacked

I had a bad one the other night.

Thought I had barrel and boosted soontir into Dash's range 1 blindspot during the first round of combat, but turns out I was just barely outside it. He gets 3 hits plus a crit from a reroll. I get 1 evade plus another evade from auto thrusters. Crit is damaged cockpit. Game over. I reluctantly played it out a bit longer but things only got worse and I finally resigned for real.

My worst start to a game ever?

Let's just say it's not immediately obvious which direction a TIE fighter miniature is pointing in if you're not paying attention when you set up, and leave it to you to figure out what happened.

Twice.

I had my focused, stealth deviced Dark Curse get one-shot through an asteroid by a range 3 Prototype Pilot before, during the not-quite-in-range-but-a-couple-ships-have-shots turn before full engagement. Tycho did the same thing (no rock but still range 3) to my stealthed Carnor Jax the next turn.

Any game where Whisper or Fel die to a single range 3 shot, through an asteroid, with at least a focus token, once in a blue moon both.

Any game where a HWK gets a munitions failure on the first hull.

Oh oh, one game many moons ago.

I line up a Gamma + APT Range 1, with TL + F, pointed at a Rookie Pilot. Enemy Ibtisam rolls hit, crit, blank. Get the Crit "Blinded Pilot". Wait, that actually happened 2 times in that tournament. It was pretty upsetting!

That sort of reminds me of a game once where I had a bomber (rhymer maybe?) with a target lock and focus on biggs in the initial engagement. Was using assault missiles and had the focus to go with it to be sure it hit. My opponent had both of his other two ships close to biggs obviously, so if I hit I'm looking at a minimum of 3 total damage between all his ships.

Well I roll hit hit blank blank, so the focus was worthless, and then biggs got 2 evades so it didn't even hit. That was painful.

I had Wedge taken out in the first turn of the game by two shots, then Horton in two more rounds, leaving Ibtisam all by herself, with munitions (because I was stupid and put munitions on her instead of Predator or something that isn't hampered by her pilot ability). Ibbie took out four Ties by herself before accidentally flying off the map.
