"New" Product Ideas

By Madcap, in X-Wing

After browsing most of the forums, especially the conversion threads, I have some suggestions for "new" products for FFG. Since there is already a ship wish list buried somewhere on the forum, this is limited to non-ship products. I am just brainstorming/spit-balling, so some of these might be bad or just not feasible for sales.

1. Bases and Stands--They get lost, broken, etc. People convert new ships and need extras. I could see these as an online-store only product unless demand warrants mass production. I like the idea of colored stands as well.

2. Unpainted Ships--This is probably a bad idea. MageKnight, back in the day, had these for people who like to paint/convert figures. I remember them being unsold on shelves at deep discounts in my local store. So, again, this might be an online store only product, if it is feasible at all.

2a. Alternate Paint Schemes--This might be slightly more manageable as a "special edition", online only purchase. I wouldn't mind a Kath Scarlet Firespray, and I'd be willing to pay extra MSRP + shipping to get one. It seems to be a popular-enough repaint. I'd also want alternate paint jobs for YTs (especially a Krayt Fang).

3. Acrylic Movement Templates--The demand is there, as demonstrated by the number of third-party products. This might only be cost efficient if FFG had another product that used the movement templates. Otherwise it is probably better for now to let others make the items and restrict them to casual play only. (I just want an official set of templates; a couple of my cardboard ones are starting to fray).

3a. Replacement Starter Set Parts--I have enough TIEs and X-Wings. Sometimes, I just want some extra parts. eBay prices + shipping make me just want to buy another starter set... which deprives another new player from getting a starter set.

Feel free to add your own ideas and/or wish list items. Also feel free to comment on mine. I already know that most of these are undoable because of an unfavorable cost-to-profit ratio. I really think #1 and maybe #3a, limited to online sales initially, could be doable.

Bases and stands are the big one.

Game tiles.

Battlefield bling like space stations etc. 3D asteroids like the (rather lame) battlefield in a box asteroid set. (I have one but i find it isn't great - largely because you still need to use the asteroid templates and put the roids over them).

More durable official maneuver dials (acryl, plastic, you get the idea), sold seperatly or in customizable bundles.

I want a pack of damage cards. I've bought two core sets, but lost a few damage cards. Now I'm done to only one complete set. No way I am buying another core set just for the stack of damage cards.

I lost a card from one of my damage decks. I emailed FFG support and they sent me an entire new deck, no questions asked.

I have a running list of "worst things in X-wing" which I have to keep meticulously because there are so few things wrong with the game

Way at the top is the primary turret advantage, followed by green dice (not their availability, just their...whimsy)

#3 is actually relevant to the topic, but Jo Jo already covered it

#4: Target-locks

Even with the different letters, I find they always get lost in the tangle of tokens and they're a far cry more annoying to work with than the off-brand acrylics (the size and shape just don't stay on bases as well).

#4 is as petty a "complaint" as they come (I really do enjoy this game ^_^ ) but it's a little something else FFG could sell.

I will point out that FFG already provides acrylic templates and tokens, you just have to win them! I originally liked it that way, because it was kinda like a bragging right type thing... But then I sold all of my bling (which didn't include templates) for over $1600 on ebay, and paid $120 to buy a full set (including templates) from Applied Perspective. I now have $1500 I previously didn't have.

I still like the system though, it keeps my pockets lined to play this game. I figure once you include all the traveling costs and ship costs and entry fees and whatnot, I'm probably money positive by a few hundred bucks. Which means I can go to Gencon and regionals and whatnot not feel guilty about it.

But on topic, I would like the small pegs that go on the ships. I've had several crack on me over the 2 years I've been playing, and it makes the ships much harder to use. Since I repaint all of my ships (well, rebels at least), I end up using the same ships more frequently than others. I've "fixed" a few of them by cutting the bottom of a peg and gluing it on, but it's not quite the same - they end up being more fragile like that since they're not as fat and don't have the same contact area that the original pegs do.

Back off topic - Applied Perspective has a brilliant TL system where it "clips" onto your number token. I would have totally bought into this if I used the number tokens. But I've seen others use them, and they work great for keeping the TL with the ship and on the base (and out of the way).

3a. Replacement Starter Set Parts--I have enough TIEs and X-Wings. Sometimes, I just want some extra parts. eBay prices + shipping make me just want to buy another starter set... which deprives another new player from getting a starter set.

They don't have shortages of core sets.

Why do you want to buy replacements when FFG has already proven to be very, very reasonable in their replacement policies?

Repaints already exist. There is just no way for them to be able to make as many as you seem to want.

FFG seems to be happy enough with third party acrylic range rulers and templates. I don't think they are going to try to expans their business into the acrylic pieces. The tourny prizes are printed in house.

A Rogue Squadron Aces pack with X-wings prepainted like Wedge, Luke etc. but also with different cards than the regular X-wing pack (to entice players to buy those too).

Magnetic tokens?

How bout this idea either as a retail product or a fun little project. Put a fairly weak magnet either in the base or on the bottom peg. Then make some tokens with weak magnets in/on them so that they stick to base or post.

Obviously not super useful for tokens that get removed like focus or evade but target locks might be nice. Also not great if a ship is dragging around half a dozen locks but in most situations it might be handy... Just a thought.

I lost a card from one of my damage decks. I emailed FFG support and they sent me an entire new deck, no questions asked.

Thanks for the tip!

The Green dice disparity is in my opinion why the TIE Advanced sucked so hard for so long, yet despite that I agree with the design decision. Turret ships will be more or less neutered by autothrusters I think, It's just bad right now cause they are the perfect retort to phantoms. Good list though.

Defo agree with X-wing Aces.

But you know. i don't think anyone has said:

X-wing: ORDNANCE PACK

Re-priced ordnance cards with new effect and ordnance tokens.

Yes plz, though I don't think it'll happen

First, because FFG's current policy seems to never go back and errata cards for balance (For rule's clarification certainly) except for large ship barrel-roll (because...yeah, **** was stupid), so we'll probably see new (hopefully) improved ordnance

Second, because FFG knows how good a move it is to package cards with ships. One part of the deal supports the other, to the point that competitive players will buy ships they never put on the table just to get the cards in stock or just buy the ships and hang the cards (had to start burying all my determination and swarm tactic copies in some darkened corner of the house once my Tie swarm started coming together)

Hell, it's so good a move that they did it to peddle the Corvette, Transport, and Raider to players who might never even play Epic

2nd Edition Core set

Include all three factions

Include debris fields. asteroids and some newer tournament legal obstacles

Include an updated damage deck that has criticals relevant to newer upgrade types

Include a comprehensive rulebook with all of the rule card additions and current FAQ

Why do you want to buy replacements when FFG has already proven to be very, very reasonable in their replacement policies?

My retort for this is why should I expect FFG to give me something for free when it costs to replace? I want to support the game. It isn't FFGs fault if I lose something or something (reasonably) wears out due to (reasonable) use. I am willing to give them money for something. I wouldn't expect FFG to give me a new Edge of the Empire core book when mine becomes worn and pages start to fall out. Why shouldn't I pay to replace my used X-Wing parts?

They don't have shortages of core sets.

Perhaps, but they do sell out from time to time (especially in my area). I'd rather have a new player get a starter set than me getting replacement parts.

I understand what you are saying. What I am saying is that I like this game very much, so much so that I am willing to pay to get replacement parts. If they want to just give them to me, I am fine with that. But I'd rather pay for it.

I actually think this is inevitable, though suspect it'll still only be 2 faction.

Re: Ordnance

I am glad we don't have errata on these. I hate it when CCGs do this. I want things to play as written on the card as much as possible. I am also glad FFG didn't do what WizKids did, where they have multiple versions of Photon Torpedoes that all have different wordings and effects.

But I'd be okay with Mk II Proton Torpedoes and Mk II Concussion Missiles being introduced in future expansions. Ordnance played a key role in Star Wars, from the destruction of 2 Death Stars to the starfighter duel between Jango Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi (one of my favorite bits from the prequels). Most of the ordnance created since Wave I has been better, but I'd like to see Protons and Concussions (very iconic ordnance) redone to make them worth taking. I think making Mark II versions would be a simple solution.

Or, if the market can bear it, have 3 starter sets: one for each faction. That would be ideal. The problem is that S&V would have to have starter stuff as well as all the extra S&V stuff. That could turn it into a $60+ starter. Still, since we are just making wishlist ideas, it doesn't hurt to ask.

The inevitability there is that the starters would each have stuff unique to the starter in there, and die hard want 1 of everything collectors (hello) would have to get one of each.

• Bases and stands. I'd pay a couple bucks plus shipping for 50-100 extra stands.

• Pilot card expansions. Maarek Stele in a Defender. Kasan Moor and the 128th in a TIE/in. Kasan Moor in an X-Wing. Soontir Fel in an X-Wing. Corran in an X-Wing. More Rogues.

• Air/Ground expansion/spinoff.

• Clone Wars expansion/spinoff.

I'd like to see campaign books with connected storyline missions. Some could use free-form squad building, some would have certain constraints ("must have at least six TIE Fighters" or "No named pilots") and some would require the use of pre-determined squads. Feature the same branching as found in the Epic scenario with the Tantive. Not only would it give groups something new to do besides straight-up skirmishes, it could be a way to nudge people into using and appreciating under-used models ("Wow, I'd never flown a Y-Wing much, but that mission really showed me how it could be used").

Some sort of this!

Also, am I really the only one interested in upgraded and most importantly more durable Maneuver Dials?

You know you can store your target locks on the base already!?
