PSA: There is no pilot named "Chippy".

By Vorpal Sword, in X-Wing

I thought Burt Reynolds was Turd Ferguson...

Exactly, and we all know Burt Reynolds is Turr Phenir.

So I guess that makes Soontir Sean Connery!

I call him rear admiral crickets

In writing I usually use RAC, when speaking about him I tend to refer to him as the Fat Rear.

Or "Chirpy", for that matter. You're saving three whole letters by shortening "Chiraneau". Also, it doesn't even make sense as a nickname. The English digraph "ch", as in "church" and "chirp", is not pronounced the same way as the French digraph "ch", as in "charade" or "Chablis".

So you're mangling the poor man's name out of sheer laziness! For shame, X-wing community... for shame. If you can't be bothered with his real name, can we at least adopt Admiral? It's more familiar and easy to spell, and it's just one letter longer than (shudder) "Chippy".

[EDIT: Fixed an autocorrect-inspired typo I didn't notice until just now.]

I have never heard anyone call him Chippy, or any other nickname for that matter. however now that you have opened my eyes, I certainly plan to start calling him some variation of Chippy. Perhaps Chip. Because it's shorter.

I don't see how "sheer-ah-NO" is insurmountable. French isn't so tough.

Agreed. There's no reason to play around with it. It's a straightforward name. And not long. And doesn't contain a single letter 'P'.

With the weirdness that will soon come with Scum names, you're wasting your effort trying to simply and already fairly simple name.

Google comes up with 37 results on the FFG boards alone.

I've been using Ush-Ush for Oicunn.

Rear Admiral Cher.

Rear Admiral Cher.

and Baron Sonny?

Actually, a "Sonny and Cher" list with Admiral Cheerios and Soontil Fel might be pretty good.

I just call him the R.A.C. At PS8 he's almost always able to lend a hand if someone gets in a bind.

I've been saying

'sheer- an - uh' as a phonetic pronunciation but ive just texted my french friend chloe for her view on how its said.

Chloe says its

Shi - rah - no

there you go thats as accurate as you're going to get. Sure its 'imperial' and not french but its clearly a french name.

And to the OP, the nickname isn't so much a matter of length as not knowing how it is pronounced (so you can't say it to yourself as you are composing) and not being able to remember how to spell it, what with 5 vowels and all.

It's pronounced "sheer-uh-no", more or less. And only the vowels at the end are really a problem; I'm pretty sure I could forgive "Chirano" much more easily than "Chippy".

"Cheerios" isn't perfect, but it's at least a better compromise...

It is almost that.

It is pronounced "sheer-ha-no".

Possibly a difference between canadian and european French but as said above my French friend says it's Shi-rah-no

Gadge friend is right, it's pronounced : She-ra-no (Chi-ra-neau)

Possibly more a english thing because to me Sheer-ha-no sound the same than She-ra-no.

English thing would be to say, "Chippy," slowly and with increasing volume...

:P

More a syllable thing.

Unless I'm wrong Sheer-ha won't be pronounced like She-ra. Think about how you would say ''cheer'', do you really extend the ''i'' in ''Chi'' like you do in ''Cheer''. Then the ''h'' in ''ha'' implies that there is a ''pause'' between the R and A while there isn't, like in ''Shiva''.

Ah. Well then yes it is She-ra-no.

On a side note/more serious note:

I hate it when nicknames sprout for newer pilots, especially since most of them are from relatively obscure sources. Especially with scum....ugh...wtf is a serissu?

I'm sure a lot of these characters have cult followings, and as much as I hate trying to Google "Etahn A'baht" every time I want to spell his name properly, I hate trying to decipher some random nickname even more.

Then again, I've always hated lingo. Sure, I guess it makes you sound cool, but it makes your community that much harder to break into.

It really, really doesn't.

I found all the acronyms baffling for ages on here tbh.

Its not like we're using text and being charged per 30 characters in 1998.

we could make it easier for new players by 'the first time' we use a phrase we like PTL we say 'push the limit' (PTL) and then call it ptl from then on in that post/thread.

Withouth a glossary or new players guide stckied at the top it makes it a but hard for new players to settle in.

Honestly, I hate seeing 'chippy' ' chripy' or any other stupid, unimaginative 'nickname' for this pilot, and 'cherios' has got to be the most ridiculous of them all. The name is easy to pronounce, and I think most of us here are smart enough to figure it out. It's just laziness, which I find sad, as language is what sets us apart.

Shi-ra-no

It really isn't that hard to do...

The name is easy to pronounce,

No, it really isn't. And more to the point, it is annoying to try and type, especially on a tablet keyboard.

No, it really is easy, and.. I try to double check my spelling when I post. Typing skills aside, I have never found language that difficult, but maybe because my mothers maiden name was Meaux, I have fewer issues with french words and how they are pronounced.. by the way, that would be the same pronunciation as 'Moe'.. kinda like Chiraneau..
