Or "Chirpy", for that matter. You're saving three whole letters by shortening "Chiraneau". Also, it doesn't even make sense as a nickname. The English digraph "ch", as in "church" and "chirp", is not pronounced the same way as the French digraph "ch", as in "charade" or "Chablis".
So you're mangling the poor man's name out of sheer laziness! For shame, X-wing community... for shame. If you can't be bothered with his real name, can we at least adopt Admiral? It's more familiar and easy to spell, and it's just one letter longer than (shudder) "Chippy".
[EDIT: Fixed an autocorrect-inspired typo I didn't notice until just now.]
PSA: There is no pilot named "Chippy".

Are we talking about Cheerios? I don't know who this Chiraneau is. The one that changes a focus to Crit at Range 1-2 right?
"Cheerios" does sound more like Chiraneau than "Chippy" does, I was genuinely confused when I first heard someone use the latter term.

We refuse to call him other than "Rear Admiral" ![]()

Thank you. I totally agree, there is no "P" in chiraneau, I don't know how chirpy got started. Admiral Cheerios sounds so much better.
And to the OP, the nickname isn't so much a matter of length as not knowing how it is pronounced (so you can't say it to yourself as you are composing) and not being able to remember how to spell it, what with 5 vowels and all.

I think his special ability has to do with wooing Roxanne on behalf of Christian de Neuvillette.
Could be wrong, though.

as my step-dad says, can't trust a man with more vowels than consonants in his name (joke)

It's pronounced "sheer-uh-no", more or less. And only the vowels at the end are really a problem; I'm pretty sure I could forgive "Chirano" much more easily than "Chippy".
"Cheerios" isn't perfect, but it's at least a better compromise...
We just call him admiral Force Drain +1.

I'm always thinking about Cyrano when I see his name... might have to do with the fact that I'm french... but I'm sure he has a big nose that no officer on board dare to look at...
I've seen enough of Rears and Vices in this thread... ![]()

So Admiral Cher. He can be the every decade diva formerly married to Sonny. The 90's video with Bevis and Butthead is a bonus.
Can I call him "Chip" if I run a two ship list and call the other one "Dale?"

It's a British nickname. You start by mangling the pronunciation his name, a hard 'ch' which is far more common in english than a soft, french, 'ch' then you continue logically to "Chippy", "Cheerios", "Chirpy", etc. Nicknames aren't about saving time, unless you're Indian
.
Yeesh, I thought we were done whitewashing the French after the whole "Freedom fries" debacle
It's Chiraneau, guys, saying it doesn't make you unpatriotic ![]()
Susan?

No o's in his name either. Sigh....
How bout admiral chuchu?
Being of Italian lineage, I was thinking the Ch was more of a K sound, so I think I'll call him Kippy!
Not really, I just want to make this nickname thing even worse...
Surely it's not that hard to pronounce his name correctly?
...and stop calling him Shirley.
Call him Chiraneau 'De Bergerac'

Usually abbreviated to "Loopy".
In the vernacular.
He'll always be Uncle Chirpy to me.

Not the letter, but the sound is there.
