Question about Maarek's ability

By Papamambo, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just wondering if Maarek's ability can be used on EVERY crit, or just one?

Came up with a crazy crit dealer

Maarek

- TIE x1

- Advanced Targeting Computer

- Marksmanship

Marksmanship allows the first focus to flip to a crit, and all others to hits. The ATC adds a crit. So, if I rolled a crit and a Focus, I would have 3 Crits. I'm just not sure how I apply Maarek's ability "When your attack deals a faceup damage card to the defender, instead draw 3 damage cards, choose 1 to deal and discard the others."

I've seen other descriptions that specify the first card dealt, but his doesn't. So, do I draw 9 cards?

Draw three cards for the first crit and deal one to the defender. Discard the other two cards.

Draw three cards for the second crit and deal one to the defender. Discard the other two cards.

Draw three cards for the third crit and deal one to the defender. Discard the other two cards.

That's what I was hoping. Thanks for the clarification!

So, here is the final list. .

TIE ADVANCED: · Maarek Stele (27)

Marksmanship (3)

Engine Upgrade (4)

TIE/x1 (0)

Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

TIE DEFENDER: · Rexler Brath (37)

Push The Limit (3)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Engine Upgrade (4)

TIE FIGHTER: Academy Pilot (12)

I'm hoping the Crits will come fast and hard with the combo of Rex and Maarek. I'm going to try it out at our next league night..

Keep in mind:

Engine Upgrade requires an action, Marksmanship requires an action, and Advance Targeting Computer requires you to have a TL on the guy you are shooting at. That is a lot of actions you'll possibly want for Maarek and two of them don't do anything to help keep him alive.

PtL on the Defender isn't nearly as easy to shake the stress from as it is with other ships.

My thought would be to keep Marksmanship away from Maarek or drop the EU as you're giving him too many action options. With Brath you may be better off using Predator to help make sure you get the hits. I'd also see about upgrading the TIE Fighter; even a Black Squadron Pilot with DtF or Wingman could be very helpful.

If you manage to get three [kaboom] results that all end up dealing cards you would be drawing the cards in sets of three. Asking if you draw nine may ultimately be accurate but there are those who would take that to mean you can draw all nine and then decide which three to deal.

Drop the Engine on Maarek and upgrade the Academy to, dare I say it, Winged Gundark!

An overstack of crits costs you a lot of resources, and you don't get much return from it.

Don't forget that your target usually deflects damage from your roll. Each shield point and each evade result is a wasted critical result. It is just more efficient to get lots of hits and a single critical hit. Shields and evade results will take care of the normal hits... but the last critical will make it to the hull.

With the ATC, Maarek doesn't really need Marksmanship. Predator seems more consistent on Maarek and Vader. It is at a personal howlrunner (or practically a full reroll if shooting at low generics), and you free Maarek to take other actions, like Engine Upgrade or Focus. An alternative may be equipping Maarek with Experimental Interface and Marksmanship. That way, you can at least use another action with Marks, but like someone mentioned, it is better if you have extra ways of stress removal (Black squadron wingmen work wonders)

And don't forget that there's still some unknown advanced pilots and unspoiled upgrades in the upcoming expansions. Maybe some of them sinergyze even better with Maarek. (like helping with stress disposal or giving extra crits).

Also, you'll will find that Rexler's ability is not as good on the field as it looks on paper. With luck, his ability will trigger once in a blue moon, and most of the matches, he will die without even using it. Also, equipping PTL in a defender is, using the most kindle words to describe it,... an apocalyptic kittenkiller disastrous from murdering hell idea.
