What other formats do you play?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing

So, clearly the standard/tournament (100-point-6-asteroid Death Match) style of play is very dominant. It's also the style of play that I've ended up playing all-but exclusively. I also enjoy it, but it does leave me wanting something more (and not because I suck at it, though that might indeed be the case ).

I hazard that this is because it's the style that is the easiest to decide to play. You need nothing more from your opponent than the decision to play the game together and a common understanding of the rules of that style of play. Of course, it is also a highly competitive style of play that many people thrive on. I ain't sayin' that's bad or anything.

But, what other styles have you played? How ready have you found people in your X-Wing-playing community to join you in that other style of play?

Furball is quite popular at our local store, particularly free for all Furball.

We do a "Bounty" style game, wherein each player builds a 35 point ship, no large bases. Each player receives a card with a color, which they keep secret. Depending on the number of players, there are either 2 or 3 players with the same color card. The goal is to land the destroying damage on another ship with the same color card as you. If you do so, you earn a point, and then the cards are shuffled and redistributed. Ships that are destroyed may return to the game, but if you were destroyed by a ship that was hunting you, you lose a bounty point. First to two bounties is typically the winner.

We usually have around 8-10 players, and it takes about two hours.

two 24pt no unique pilots. Free for all or 1v1.

Good practice for basics. No OP ships.

Respawn rules, where ships are killed return to the game after 3 turns. Objective is to get most killed pts.

120-125 games.

3 person free for all.

Scenarios for fun.

I love playing 300-500 point Epic.

And the one-time 3,000 point X-Wing: Apocalypse game we did was insanely fun.

Tell me you took pics of that.

That's...alot of ships.

How long did that game take?

Something along the lines of 7 hours for 4 or 5 turns with the Rebels being completely destroyed.

My group plays campaigns, Epic, and Unique games. Like hoth, trench run, Mario Cart Upgrades and more.

We love campaigns and scenarios, because it brings balance to all the ships. Plus they are a blast to play and invent.

3-4 small base ships, no points limit, is fun as a slight change from the 100-point norm.

My default training run is "Capture the Flag," where the objective it to land on Focus tokens strewn about the board to claim them. I use the lowest PS pilots, unupgraded. Great for maneuver practice.

I love the Furball we do (as Engine25 described) it is really fun to have a bounty to chase while evading others trying to get you.

Many in our area also participate in a very awesome RPGish campaign, flying single ships in a squadron.

I dig Epic games because it does tend to feel much more like a pivotal battle as opposed to a skirmish in an asteroid field.

I played in an escalation tournament a few weeks ago... adds layers of complexity to the squad building part. The first 60pt round is the toughest and things kind of even out from there. Anything can happen in the 150pt round.. usually tough ships like the decked out Falcon can crumble with more firepower on the board. First place was a Rebel swarm. I took second with Rear Admiral, Shuttle, and two Interceptors. Third place was a Phantom and mini swarm.

Players in my area are interested in trying Escalation and Epic games but less interested in a league that requires they play EVERY week.

We also play a Tag-Team furball variant. I'm sure I've posted the rules around here at some point...

150 pts on 3'x3'

We just kind of wing it. I got about half way through a campaign before we started getting a number of new people. Last night we had three of us wanting to play, so we just did 100 pts each and had a free-for-all.

We did some epic style fights before and there were some requests to go back to that. So, next Thursday we will do some Epic fights. Not sure on the points. Could be higher if we had the Raider or more Decimators.

We sometimes do 2 x 2. I think it could be interesting once S&V is done.
