GOG Lucasfilm Wave II continued! Rogue Squadron! Rebellion! Empire at War!

By millernumber1, in X-Wing

I loved rebellion, though i'd classify it as turn based strategy more than RTS. Galactic battlegrounds was ok for a couple weeks, mostly just from being desperate for a star wars RTS. Empire at war was much better. Rogue squadron, rebellion, the original x-wing, and dark forces 2 ate many an hour from my childhood.

Except Rebellion was played in real time, and didn't have turns

so, yanno...

Technically it did, everything was done on a step timer which speed could be varied... I think it could be paused.

It's like Baldurs Gate is technically turn based.

Do you need a joystick to fly these games or can mouse + keyboard / dual shock controllers work fine?

Rogue can use mouse.

Alliance and XvT you'll need a stick.

This said, game controllers will work, they won't give you good results but they will allow you to play the game.

Thanks! I'd like to get a stick, but I'm a newly wed graduate student with limited hobby money. Not sure that it's a justifiable expense.

I remember playing Rebellion with my mate X wing nut over Dial up modem, lol. Always telling me to hurry up the speed while i sent my agents to destroy his shipyards at the start of the game, gold.

COOL! I held off on these given the prices some still command on steam, with them on GOG I'll be loading up real soon. Never even heard about Rebellion but it looks fun as hell. Thanks for posting!

Naming Star Destroyers never got old. Also, putting Thrawn on a SSD is almost overkill.

It's the best **** star wars game ever created...you will not be disappointed.

As much as I enjoy Rebellion, I understand how frustrating the end game can be, especially with a large galaxy. Me, I'm just, I can conquer the whole galaxy.

This is absolute torture for me. To feed my brand new X-wing habit I made a new years resolution to not buy any computer games this year. A few days later and all of my favourite Star Wars games arrive on GoG.....

Well that was silly, what with GTA V finally coming to the best gaming platform in a few weeks and with Evolve about a month out from release and now the re release of some good old star wars games, then we have the beta for world of wars ships, no mans sky should be getting a beta sometime this year should hopefully be seeing the HD re release of Homeworld.....

In the legendary words of Mr T "I pity da fool!!"

Does anyone else have a big problem with the controls for Rogue Squadron? I'm using the mouse and it either barely moves at all or jerks a long way, so you can't ever really aim at stuff. It's really frustrating. It doesn't have a gamepad option either, and it's not recognizing my joystick. Big fan of the "simulator" ones and hoping to find out why everyone loves Rogue so much.

Yeah, when I'm playing Rogue Squadron with joystick, it's got huge problems - I'll be pointing right at the rear of a ship and it won't hit it for several seconds, or I'll gently pull in a direction and it jerks my ship 45 degrees past my target. I think it was a bit smoother when I played it on the N64, but all the controllers I had were broken...

After playing the X-wing quadrilogy (or at the time trilogy) I found Rogue squadron quite weak. It's fun because Atmospheric combat and pretty graphics, and fairly arcady. But it's not replacement for the x-wing series.

It's called a dead zone, and it's supposedely meant to help with control. It really doesn't.

Picked up X-Wing Alliance the other day and it is REALLY good to be able to play that game again.

The graphics are still okay I think.

Do these games have multiplayer support? I loved EaW online, but steam pulled the plug on online play.

Also, the upgrade that you can download doesn't work with X-Wing Alliance, as it checks for the physical disk. Wonder if they'll update that

Having the physical discs handy, I'm not really bothered. I'll give the GOG version some testing tonight and I pray it'll fix the nvidia bugs.

If not, XvT:BOP will more than suffice, being the best game in the series. (In my opinion).

Wasn't Steam, the service that hosted it (GameSpy) went under.

Well, friday is game night for me. XvT and XWA will undergo extensive rig testing.

If anyone wants me to I can post the results of IP hosting.

Given Gamespy going down has created a rather large opening in terms of games without servers, I'm getting quite good at it.

A guide basically would amount to: find your ip with ipchicken.com or something similar.

Make sure your router has DMZ'ed your local LAN address (example, the PC I host with is 192.168.0.2 - so that is the passthrough). With port forwarding free up the required ports.

Have your friends try to connect.

Profit.

Bought rebellion and put it on my old laptop. I loved it when the emperor told me that " I had not adequately supported him on his mission and it has failed".

It's been a decade since I played it last. Been hammering Rebel production facilities until my shipyards are beefed up enough to feild some cruisers and star destroyers.

I had the game crash on me when I took direct control of a space battle. I won the battle but when it was supposed to pop back into the regular game it crashed. Will have to look at debugging in later on today after work.

And if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a wagon. But yeah, at least I just realized it's awkward but playable with keyboard alone!
