Cost of the Store Champion kit?

By krohnt, in X-Wing

Just curious as to whether someone knows the cost of this kit. I've seen various entry fees in my area for this tournament ranging from $5 to $20.

I believe all the kits are $20 for the store.

No, the store championship kit costs more than the regular kits. Not sure how much, but the guys running my local tournaments said it was something like double the price.

Yeah, I'd guess 20-30. The entry fee is for the cost of space and employees who have to spend time away from their normal duties to run the event. (think of it as the store ensuring it breaks even, and betting people will spend money during on snacks, ships, etc)

I believe it was $60 last year.

Indeed. Last year it was $60. And seeing as the OP kits are still $20, and really nothing additional has been added this year to the SC, I'm assuming they're maintaining the $60 cost.

I would agree with you that this year different stores seem to be charging wildly different amounts. There was a store by me last week with a $15 entry, and next week there's another one that has a $5 entry, and is supplementing the prize pool (based on attendance, in the past it's been the "extra" entry fees go back to the winners in the form of store credit).

And later in the season, there's another one charging $15. Sadly, it really doesn't matter, I'm going to go to them regardless.

The stores by me all seem to be charging $20 with $10 coming back immediately as store credit, and additional credit going to the top eight.

The Kits do cost $60 same as last year. The group I host has an average attendence of 8-10 people. I'm charging $10 for the event to garentee that the kit is paid for. All the extra will go towards door prizes.

^ that strikes me as odd, the immediate $10 store credit, if someone comes fir the event but didn't normally go to that store I could see them getting a little upset...

Eh, nobody's twisting their arm - if they don't like the system, they can take their business elsewhere. It seems like a sensible way for the store to ensure that the event is profitable for them, and profitable events are now likely to become repeat events, which is good for us.

Just pickup a couple of packs of card protectors or something. Seems like a nice way for the store to get some business out of running the tournament and is a nice reward for their regulars.

Thanks for the info. I simply wanted to know the cost since it isn't readily available info to the masses. If it was $60 last year, it probably would be the same this year. I figure someone on the forums has a close relationship with store owners and would know for sure.

As I posted earlier they are $60 this year as well.

So, how much in entry fees would be reasonable? I'm thinking $10 or less. Your thoughts?

We do the similar thing, anything over the cost of a kit for the tournament goes toward a prize pool of store credit.

$10 seems right, I've seen one in my area for $5 and one for $15 but the venue I'm going to in Feb. is charging $20 hence my question as to how much the kits cost. To make matters worse, they originally posted the cost as $10 in December and last week changed it to $20. Maybe they didn't know how much the kits cost back in December? They have never hosted a store championship before either.

Does this store host regular events? This extra fee could be fear of not being able to make up the cost of the tournament. If they hold regular events and get 6 or more people $10 is about right.

I kind of thought of that too Osoroshii, but wouldn't you think (they would think) since it's more prestigious, "Store Championship" that they would feel that they will get more people to play? They don't hold regular tournaments. Once every few months I would estimate and participation is low.

I don't work at my FLGS, but I organize everything X-Wing related and more or less have free reign to do things how I want.

The other stores in my area generally charge $20 for their store championship entry fee. Last year, one of them gave out absolutely zero store credit. The other gave out minimal store credit for the amount of players that registered (even after the $60 cost of the kit was taken into account).

I was able to choose between $10 and $20. Here's my justification for going with $20 ($10 of which instantly becomes store credit):

  • My FLGS owner has been absolutely incredible when it comes to supporting X-Wing. We have open play every Monday, open Star Wars gaming on Wednesdays (X-Wing, LCG, Imp Assault), allows people to come in for pick-up games on "off" days, and let's me do my thing when it comes to tournaments (with the caveat that I can't schedule them on weekends where there is a major Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh event, which are infrequent). On top of that, he offers preorder discounts on upcoming X-Wing product. Without him letting me have free reign, the X-Wing scene in our local area would not be what it was.
  • We are essentially taking over a good portion of the store for an entire day (we had a 24 player turn-out).
  • I want X-Wing to be a good deal for the store. We don't bring in anywhere near the revenue that CCG sales bring in, but I want to help the store for helping us.
  • Players were able to use that $10 toward discounted preorders on Wave 6 ships, which all of us are going to be buying anyway. It also encourages players to preorder through the store rather than through an online retailer.
  • The remaining $10 went toward prize support for the Top 8. I was able to give 1st/2nd $35 store credit, 3rd/4th $25, 5th/6th - $20, and 7th/8th $10.
