Storage Today what is everyone using?

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

As I keep getting PMs on this one - details below...

Consider the state of the game, already...and now consider the state of it as the year progresses. More Rebel and Imperial ships. More Scum and Villainy ships. Imperial (and likely Scum) Huge ships. Etc.

Trying to come up with a portable solution for an entire collection...? That way leads to madness!

The large display case I found on eBay, in the Sports Memorabilia section. Intended for display of a pair of size 16 basketball shoes, it fits the Rebel 'huge' ships perfectly.

There was actually some cases that looked a lot better for the purpose down in Australia's eBay - didn't have the mirrored rear surface that I'm not a fan of. But shipping was exorbitant, so went with this one.

Make sure the dimensions match what you want, but those 'men's size 16 shoes' display cases definitely seem to be the right size for epic ships.

The smaller boxes I just picked up from the Container Store chain - a 'multi-level display box'. Has three plastic blocks you can reposition around in it to have various display tiers. This thing:

...and then I just stack all the base tiles on each mini's base, usually trying to group them (all the 'Howlrunner' tiles in one stack, for example) more or less together so that it's easy to find the one I need when putting a kit together for an event.

The only thing I'd call out about the multi-tier display box is that - the plastic blocks that it has room for three rows of - if you plan to USE all three rows as steps (as I do in several of the boxes), you have to plan out which minis go where. The box is deep enough for EXACTLY three rows, touching the base nubs on the first and rear row, so minis that stick out a great distance from their base front/rear will have issues in some places. (IE., the B-Wings hang out very far past the front of their base, but not at all from the back...so they can go in the 2nd or 3rd row, but not the first. Y-Wings hang out past the front AND rear of their base, so if using all three rows, they can only go in the middle. etc)

As you can see, it's pretty easy to still get a massive collection in them, it just means you can't necessarily put everything anywhere.

I have a Plano 7771 for home storage or when I provide all the material for friends and family. It's enourmous and has space for all the cards in the side sections and has all the dice and tokens in the clear top section for easy access, and generally looking great.

My worry with the "Plano" style storage system is, I would think, that there would be wear and tear on the ships, jostling around against hard plastic. I dread to think how many x-wing cannons may have broken off.

Horses for courses I s'pose.

I've used my Plano since Wave 1 and not had a single bit out of place or damaged.

Not a scratch on my ships and ive been less than careful about bumping the tackle box on things.

The X-wings are safe in the Plano - I store them on their bases, every ship that I can. The B-wing is really the only one I worry about, but no problems yet.

This is perfectly fine for me. However, if I were the type to paint, I would probably invest in custom foam.

I've gone back to my previous post and updated my rebel and empire tray pics.
