R3A2 and Turrets

By Heterozygous, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey all, question about how R3-A2 astromech works in conjunction with the Y wing's Ion cannon turret.

The card reads "When you declare the target of your attack, if the defender is insideyour firing arc, you may receive 1 stress token to cause the defender to receive 1 stress token."

My question is, when it states inside your firing arc, does it mean your original unmodified arc (90 degrees in front), or can this be applied to the turret?

Turrets don't change your firing arc. They allow you to select a target outside the arc, but the arc is still there as printed.

R3-A2 can trigger when firing the turret, but the target must have some part of its base inside your firing arc.

cool, i thought this was the case. thank you

Thus why the title card coming in wave 6 is going to be so useful with r3a2

Somewhat off topic, but I think people are going to be sadly disappointed in the effectiveness of this combo. Y-wings don't have the dial to handle stress well when they've got a turret... Double-stressing yourself as a pure dogfighting Y-wing is going to be a recipe for disaster.

yeah, I've been playing around with the setup in vassal. It does OK as long as you have enough support ships. On paper it looks great, especially against Phantoms with ACD. The problem is getting around onto your target. There just isn't enough decent maneuvers. It's a low cost stress machine for 31 points, but there are better options out there. In certain circumstances it can be very useful.

This combo may look good on paper, but I still think it's going to turn a Y-wing into a stress-dealing, stressed-up dog. It's dial isn't good enough to make it a good dogfighter and double-stressing it is going to lessen it's effectiveness.

Only way I can see it working is if you just stop caring whether your Y-Wing gets it's action or not. The only good way the Y-Wing has to deal with stress take up it's droid slot, which would prevent you from using R3-A2.

I think the idea behind using r3a2 with the ywing title is to continuously dump stress and the hope of an ion shot going through, and dump him on Horton and you get re rolls at range. It's more used as crowd control and you bring in the big guns to finish the bad guy off. I can be useful, but also very situational.

If they try to remove stress, it will indeed end in disaster. If they keep the stress and run white mauenvers, it might work. The Y-Wing loses all actions. But the target loses actions during at least one round as well. If the target performs two green maneuvers in a row to clear stress, it becomes predictable.

I can see a situation where nobody can perform any actions for the rest of the game due to stress. Attacking twice, the Y-Wing can win.

Yeah, that's the idea behind. darned be the actions, just barrel through. Who needs actions when you are denying the other guys actions for long enough so another ship can come through and finish the guy off. Just the thought process.
