Clever Range Ruler Replacements?

By porkozone, in X-Wing

Has anyone come up with a range ruler replacement that can be separated for smaller storage or to be able to be split?

I've seen where people have taken a second core set ruler and cut it, so that they have a range 1 ruler for tight spaces and a range 3 ruler.

I've also seen where people used cut wooden sticks for separate R1 and R3 that can fit into tight spaces better (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/1642261/star-wars-x-wing-miniatures-game). I like that idea a lot, but would still have a long stick to deal with storage-wise.

The CoreSec Omni Ruler http://corseceng.com/omni-ruler/ is the closest to what I can imagine, but I have a hard time paying more for shipping than for the product (but I may anyway).

Has anyone else come up with a similar concept with readily available items?

How small are you thinking? Do you really need something smaller than a Range 3 ruler?

Cogotwo do a range 1 and 2 ruler, and I find them pretty useful.

I think porkozone is looking for something modular that's easier to store and transport. I've been looking for the same thing actually.

You could always just use a soft ruler like the ones Wizkids gave out with their old minis games. Just cut it down to twelve inches and mark out each four inch section for shooting ranges.

Actually the old Mage Knight ruler would be perfect since its eighteen inches (range five).

I second this.

Cog'o'two have great customer service, ship fast and at a far better cost than to get something similar from the US (I live in New Zealand and yet cog'o'two can get their product to me faster and cheaper)

They have some of the best product on the market.

You should check out their short range set, it also comes with a straight 1 and 2 with handy notches in the sides for when you need to temporarily remove a ship from the board.

Lol I come off like a salesman :-P

You could try out one of try one of them small keyring style tape measures im pretty sure the range increments are every 10cm.Or if your feeling crafty take three lengths of 10cm dowel wood and mount magnets in the ends so they stick together.

I did the cut down on one of my core set sticks does the job pretty well.

I use war gaming industry segmented 1/2/3 ruler.

Be careful about cutting the cardboard ruler, as the print doesn't line up perfectly with the punch. Your range 2 line is likely in different places when compared to it's other side.

The good news is, the range ruler has some very specific measurements.

100mm : range 1

200mm : range 2

300mm : range 3

A 5-Straight movement template is longer than a range 2 ruler. A range 3 ruler is really too long? I totally agree that the range 5 one is, but a range 3, really?

Greenman Design also does the R1 and R2 acrylics, which I just love! I use them every single game I play.

I have to say that the easiest to use and store is probably a small weight with a piece of string attached. The string has the ranges marked in ink on them so you can easily tell ranges.

Beyond that, I want to get a set of those Range 1 and Range 2 sticks.

You could take an acrylic range ruler, cut it at the range markers (or get 3 R1 rulers), drill two holes into the end, and glue in two magnets. Now you can combine it all for 1 R3 (or continue out to R5) and break it down for a R1/R2 for ease of use, and then R1 for transportation.

Herm... I think I have a new project to do!

I almost did this to my epic ruler, unfortunately it wasn't until after I drilled a hole into it for a hinge.

Now the magnets just keep it opened/closed.

Having separate range 1 and range 2 rulers are very handy for measuring in tight spaces with lots of ships.

You're assuming I even play epic, and have a range 5 ruler.

I'm just a simple casual player, and am trying to keep everything in 2 core set boxes. The range three ruler doesn't fit without placing it diagonally across everything else, and I've been afraid it might get bent at some point.

Plus my mind just started trying to come up with a cool hack for this after seeing the dowel stick ones (which would be easier to get between ships), and thought I'd ask what others have come up with (if anything).

I'm a big fan of range 1 & 2 rulers, but not as an alternative to a 1 piece range 3 ruler. If you are worried about a range 3 ruler bending, get an acrylic one. $6 and you have a way better option. $6 more and you have a range 1 and range 2 set to go with it.

I did come up with a cool design for a range 5 ruler. It's for sale at Applied Perspective (I design stuff for Adam).
