Scum Swarm that I hope works... maybe.

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Jumping the gun in that we do not even know the M3-A dial but I was reading the thread on Z-95 swarms and came up with this idea for the scum. Serissu is sorta the bizarro-world Howlrunner but for defense. So, how to keep her alive so she can keep the rest of the swarm alive? Well, she already has more agility than the rest of the swarm and then I thought about bodyguard. Turns out there is just enough points left for Kaa'To who can steal a focus from one of the poor pirates and use it to boost Serissu up to 5 green dice. Now, re-rolling a defense dice may not be as good a re-rolling an attack dice but this list might be interesting to fly. Assuming of course that the M3-A can fly with the Z's...

Serissu (20)
Stealth Device (3)
Kaa'To Leeachos (15)
Bodyguard (2)
Binayre Pirate (12) X5
Total: 100

This looks like a solid start, though of course the specifics of the M3-A's maneuver dial are very important missing information. If the dial is good enough, a swarm of M3-As might be even better than Z-95s. Cartel Enforcers have one fewer shield but one more agility and pilot skill than Binayre Pirates, and they also have the option to use evade and barrel roll actions. Serissu's barrel roll won't get used if she's in the middle of a Pirate swarm, but if the whole formation can roll it opens up new maneuvering possibilities.

The following list could work:

Serissu (20)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Stealth Device (3)
Cartel Spacer (14)
Ion Cannon (3)
"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2)
Cartel Spacer (14) x4
Total: 100

For a different twist, you could build a swarm list very similar to yours but arm all the Z-95s with Feedback Arrays. I have no idea if this will actually work since you have to get within range 1 of your target to feedback them, but it gives you a way to force through the last few points of damage to guarantee a kill on a wounded ship. At the very least, it's worth trying.

Serissu (20)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Stealth Device (3)
Kaa'To Leeachos (15)
Bodyguard (2)
Feedback Array (2)
Binayre Pirate (12) x4
Feedback Array (2)
Total: 100

Serissu (aka Serious) needs to be in a list where he has the least offensive firepower. In reality, Serious is more like Biggs than Howlrunner. Serious in a Z swarm is like running Biggs with a bunch of Zs, it doesn't really make sense. You rather shoot Biggs first who has 3 attack dice, than a Z-95.

I will shoot Serious first rather than the Zs, why even bother shooting a Z?

How bout this squad:

Serious + SU + Determination = 25

Cartel Spacer + HLC + Title + SD X 3 = 75

Here you have an interesting dilemma. Do you shoot Serious who is only putting out a piddly two attack dice, or do you shoot at the Heavy Syck's who are going to be really hard to hit? Pair Serious with a ship that you really don't want to die.

But in this list, Serissu (a girl fwiw) is rolling four, five, maybe six green dice while the Z's only roll two or three. If my opponent focuses fire on Serissu, that is good news for me because it should make the entire squad last much longer.

Actually, I think this list is pretty good! I didn't think about Bodyguard with her. I like it a lot.

As for worrying about the dial......surely it's not as bad as the Z-95! So, you should have no worries.

Too bad you can't get a ship with Draw Their Fire, as well.

Then I would just shoot Leachos who now doesn't have a focus for defense. Once he's gone Serious is nothing more than a Tie Fighter. I just don't this serious is worth it when her wingman aren't more dangerous than she is.

I understand the objection but now you are shooting at a Z-95 with defensive re-rolls first, then at Serissu who rolls 4 then three dice until dead and at the same time the rest of the swarm is tossing red dice all around. Not the greatest swarm ever but there is some decent synergy and if Serissu is towards the back you leave the opponent with no truly attractive targets. Any of the Z's are going to be harder to one-shot with the re-roll.

Here's a weird variation:

Serissu (20)
Determination (1)
Stealth Device (3)
Kaa'To Leeachos (15)
Bodyguard (2)
Stealth Device (3)
Binayre Pirate (12) X4
Feedback Array (2)
Total: 100
Determination is a waste on a two hull ship so probably could drop for an initiative bid.
