experimenting with keyan

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

so after my first round of tournament play this year, i'm trying to find slightly different variations of popular builds that will perform slightly better than expected, and i cooked this up

Keyan Farlander

expose

advanced sensors

heavy laser cannon

experimental interface

Leebo

heavy laser cannon

outrider

determination

recon specialist

proton rockets

that all clocks in at 99 points. keyan pumps out the damage, with 5 dice, an action, and stress every turn. leebo also works familiar territory here, with a little deterrent to cover 25% of the donut.

Expose doesn't work with secondary weapons. Plus, on a 1 agility ship, he will get burned down pretty fast. Leebo looks ok, though the proton rockets seem gratuitous.

Expose is only going to work on your Primary attack. It won't buff your HLC.

Expose:

Action: Until the end of the round, increase your primary weapon value by 1 and decrease your agility value by 1.

I've found that Keyan works really well with AdvS and SoT. You can add HLC to that if you want the 4th die. The point being that he can take an action before moving, and then always perform a red maneuver to get the stress. Furthermore, you can change your dial like navigator to respond to a PS6- pilot. Given, there aren't that many of those around these days, thus why I have bookshelved him for the moment.

Others seem to like him with HLC and opportunist. I can see the synergy, but it needs additional people to make it work well (either blockers or Wes), and even that won't always work well against Decimators.

seeing the error of my ways now. i use to run a build like this with jan in support, so i was dealing 5 die HLC shots. back to the drawing board.

This combo has worked well for me. 35 points used however you want, I like Wedge with lonewolf/R7-T1.

I really like Farlando, he is probably my favourite configuration.
