Player Call Signs

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing

The Monday X-wing night that I help organize at my FLGS, X Planet in the Mississauga/Greater Toronto Area is starting up a fun league where we award points not just for winning - we award points for bringing altered ships (repaints, mods, etc.) and we also give ourselves fun/silly/cool call signs like ace pilots! TOP GUN YO!

Someone suggested I go by "Scarlet", which could do but is probably a jab at how I fly Kath like 90% of the time. >___>

I thought "Marmalade" or "Cat Fiasco" might be fun too.

I thought it might be fun here as well - what's your call sign? Sound off!

I like your idea, I don't have one but I think I will bring it up to my friends.

Oh and just a note for you, call signs are typically given by fellow pilots based on something that tells everyone how others see you, so I think you should stick with Scarlet and inform others its an old tradition to use only what others give you, and tell them the name is intended to boost moral so nothing derogatory, tradition started with WW1 aces and is still done today in every branch of the military.

So enjoy the tradition.

Scarlet! ;)

Amusingly, FTS Gecko was my callsign from when I played X-Wing Alliance online back in the day.

Why not Madonna, seeing as how you're living on an Imperial world and you are an Imperial girl?

I have the sneaking suspicion I'm going to run out of likes today.

Not bad, but it needs StarWarzing up a bit.

Ma'Dodonna?

When I was in Civil Air Patrol we had callsigns. Never anything cool like "Maverick" or "Iceman"

Our commander was a Navy copilot. His callsign was "Gecko" because he wears thick glasses and of course was in a green jumpsuit and his lips were chapped so he kept licking them. Their CO walked up to him on the day they were coming up with nicknames and said "You look like a Gecko, Gecko". He kept a sticker of Gex on the side of his helmet which was pretty cool.

I was "Grasshopper" because I caught a Katydid the weekend before we got callsigns and nobody else knew the difference between a grashopper and a katydid.

We had some other fun ones. A-Frame had an A Frame blown into him while a C-130 was taking off at an Airshow. "Gerber", "Wingnut", "Romeo", "Inchworm"......That's all I remember for now.

The important thing is that callsigns are fun.

That sounds like Jan Dodonna's grandma :P .

The joke is that you should not get to pick a callsign for yourself, but the others have to find one for you, and vice-versa.

You know like you want to pick "Rocketman", but afterwards you are "Fruitloops"...

I'd hate to be one of those unlucky enough to get a callsign like "bump" or "asteroid" ;)

My online alias is reference to my nickname when I marched tuba in college. (How 'bout that nerd cred!) So, "Gambler" would work just fine. On a related note, I plan on running Lando on pretty much every YT ever just because I think he is a metric ton of fun.

Scarlet is the name of one of the best Star Craft 2 players in the world- arguably the best in North America.

She's also a Canadian lass. :)

Great topic! I agree with ForceM, you shouldn't get to pick your call sign. In the US military pilots don't pick theirs, which is how my buddy ended up with "Cheese" because everyone kept mis-pronouncing his last name, which is close to a popular type of cheese. I've got several less than flattering nicknames, but my gamer handle happens to be "Mr. Cupcake" thanks to my sister sitting near me during a Warmachine tournament. The story goes:

Sister to my opponent: Call him Cupcake, he loves that

Opponent to me: <chuckling> Hi, Cupcake

Me: <serious look> That's MR. Cupcake

My advice to those who don't like their nickname: embrace it, you'll be surprised how much it grows on you!!!

Scarlet sounds like your thing then. I'm being called Tycho most of the time when I play or talk about x-wing as I play Tycho most of the time.

a call sign is given by your peers. It is earned by you, but bestowed by those around you, it is an act of comraderie and belonging, and great call signs are often earned through foolish acts or errors more than great accomplishments.

although we have a woman in our group whose call sign is the Iron maiden. she is BRUTAL with ties of any kind. so, she earned that callsign.

One of our helo pilots in the desert slammed the aircraft into the ground so hard he bent the skids up beside the doors. Callsign after that = easyrider

we also had miss Piggy, FIDO, Vader (he was black, dark vader became simply vader) etc.

We had a crewchief jump out and sprint away from an aircraft he was still tethered to: Callsign Bungee

These people didn't necessarily like their callsigns at the time, but now they are pround reminders of what were usually screw ups.

This is Bigfish, signing off. don't ask, it's classified.

I remember an old Wings episode where a Navy pilot was explaning that he got the callsign Sparks because he generated them everytime he trapped aboard the carrier.

Not really a callsign, but when I used to play 40k, I was frequently called "Xenos Scum" because I played Tau, Necrons, and Eldar, and everyone else had at least one Imperium army.

I flew him for the first time ever the other day, and not once did he ever give me two blanks. Good on you, Mr. Calrissian

Yep what Darthfish said... the one i earned when i was in the Air force was Swedge... long story..... but once you get tagged you got it for life... i once gave a guy a call sign of Yaki simply because his last name was Mandu and we were in Korea at the time... The name stuck and he was forever called just "Yaki: even when we got back state side..

my ships are painted red, so in our rpg campaign i got the call sign big red.

once big red got shot down and captured, i decided all my pilots were chewing gum.

currently flying as Trident, with a very impressive record.

Hellrider.

Occasionally Zechs, but that's more a character name.

I earned some pretty... distinct scars riding a quad once. Was hellish.

In hindsight, it's a wonder no-one calls me Tumble.

speaking of gundam, if anyone happend to catch the twitch feed of the first atlanta store championship, i was flying the big red decimator, and i was given the title "the red comet" while a few in-store guys were calling me "battle lobster"

...if you like "Scarlett" and it needs star wars ing up a bit... use a name of a favorite character or ship or creature... Dodonna was suggested... so how about " Scarlett Dodonna".... the mynock has long been favored as our team mascott. I used to play the star wars Ccg card game... we called our play group "team Mynock" ... the inside joke is mynocks are also known as power suckers as they attach themselves to star ships and feed on the energy... we had shirts made with a batman style logo...that read team mynock in the "bat" shape . The back read in star wars basic/ looks like space gibberish ... the font style is " arebesh" Team mynock: we suck! "

My personal call sign is Rancor34.

My suggestion... if you don't like Scarlett Dodonna is the Scarlett mynock. ;) best wishes hope you find one that feels right. ;)
