Leebo/Kath

By cubby09, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I apologize if this has already been discussed.

the question came up in lastnight's casual: Kath punched through Leebo's shield resulting in one crit. Leebo used pilot ability to pick card then used determination to discard a pilot crit. Does this count as canceling a crit for Kath's ability resulting in a stress for leebo?

I agree with Dragonet's interpretation. Especially since Determination has you discarding the dealt damage card which is after all dice have been cancelled and you are applying damage. The player using Leebo also applied Leebo's ability correctly.

If the crit were cancelled, you wouldn't have drawn the damage card,

A face-up damage card is not a crit. A [kablam] result on a die is also not a crit. We use terms like "hit" and "crit" because we cant type the icons, but this is a misnomer. If you read Kath's ability it says if a ship cancels at least 1 [kaboom] result they get a stress. the only way to cancel [kaboom] results is with evade dice/tokens. Once you have gotten to the point of dealing face-up damage cards you have gone past the point of cancelling dice.

Discarding face up damage cards is not the same as cancelling [kaboom] results.

Hope that helps clarify!

Actually FFG themselves refer to the symbols as "hit" and "critical hit" dating all the way back to the video tutorial. I think it's safe to say that it's what they are called.

They are a hit and critical hit result, but that is not the same thing as a hit in rule term, which was IMO a poor choice on their part, should of called it something else.

But in this case both Cptnhalfbeard and LemonheadPrime are correct.

What Kath deals with is the dice results, not the effects of those results.

My point is, nowhere in the rules or the text on any card ever, has the word "hit" or "crit" been used when referring to dice results. In order to understand the rules and the functionality of a lot of cards, it's best to avoid using terms like that.

Exactly. It doesn't matter what slang terms the players use, even if the players designed the game. In the rules the various symbols don't have names, trying to assign them names that mean something else in the game is just asking for confusion.

Hence the movement to call them booms and kabooms.
