Custom EotE dice sets

By Admiral Terghon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Has anyone seen any 3rd part dice sets for EotE? I looked extensively and couldn't find any. I'm guess because the symbols for the dice are trademarked or some such.

If no other companies are making or can make the sets, can we make one ourselves? I know companies like Chessex do custom dice orders, and there are probably others. I'd like to make a gem-like set, or several sets worth to be honest.

Anyone seen anything like this yet? I've got two sets from FFG and have no complaints, I'd just like something a bit cooler.

No third party that I am aware of and when I have asked a die manufacturer he said he wouldn't risk the copyright issues.

I've been tempted to customize my own set, perhaps go over the symbols with a bit of my wife's fingernail polish, or use some acrylic paint, only thing I'm worried about is that it would unbalance the dice.

If you didn't want to infringe on any rights, you could probably get away with a set of dice of different specific colors and symbols. They'll essentially be off-brand Star Wars dice.

Yeah, the symbols for triumph and advantage are certainly TMed, threat and dispair possible.

I suppose there's no issue using similar symbols if you want to commission custom dice though. The symbol for success is hard to tm, advantage could just use wings of a different shape (I'd say start with a countries military jump wings and just remove the parachute) and triumph can just be a sword with a circle. Fail can be just a triangle, threat just a hex with a dot inside, and despair...well triangle and circle would work though something more ominous would work too.

So doable...

Chessex, about 5 years ago, wasn't as strict on the copyright thing. Then some Heroclix players booked 6 months of their custom production with an order for 9,000 custom super hero dice. The players, chessex, and the Heroclix fan site they were primarily being sold through all got a cease and desist order from Marvel comics, DC comics, or both. You can still find super hero dice on eBay and such, but most custom dice makers won't make them any longer. Due to that, some pairs of dice sell for upwards of $100.

Man, I just want them to sell singles! I lost a yellow die somewhere along the line and I've been unable to rest easy knowing that my sets are out of balance!

I'm still using the style of dice that came with the beta - stickers on blanks. Blank dice are available for fairly cheap online in decent sized packs. We printed out about a dozen sheets onto standard label paper, then spent an afternoon/evening watching Star Wars, cutting and sticking. Afterwords sprayed the whole set with a half-dozen layers of sealant/lacquer to keep the stickers on and ink safe. I've only had a couple of them blank-out (ink rubbed off) or loose a facing in what, almost four years? And they go to conventions.

Use a 3-D printer. Upload a design to Thingiverse or Shapeways, and have at it. ;)

Yeah, but the problem is that a 3D printed die will almost certainly cost more than an entire pack of dice - unless the Shapeway dice have dropped in price significantly over the last 6 or so months.

True enough, but you did say that you wanted only one due to balance issues, right? So, buying a whole new set wouldn’t solve the balance issue, would it?

;)

All that rage contained in my penguin avatar has never been more appropriate than right now. . . . .

Folks you too can help out this poor penguin. For just 1 dice a day. Less than the cost of a cup of coffee, you can give this arctic avian a new dice to call home.

It's just a small contribution. We can bring peace to this penguin.

Bringing balance to the Dice...

STEP 1: Buy pack of dice

STEP 2: Take yellow dice from pack

STEP 3: Keep other dice in storage in case other dice are lost.

Balance restored :)

Ah. the replacement set. You just need to use a neuralyzer to make sure you forget you have an incomplete set of space dice.

You know, I'd like to see TWO Force Dice in the F&D Beginner set!

We now have more purple and green dice than we'll ever need, but Force dice are thin on the ground. This wasn't too bad in EOE/AOR where our characters are limited to two, but the F&D group have one character with 4 and one with 5...

honestly this is why I just went with the app haha. Cheaper than a single set of dice, gives you effectively more than one set and you can program your rolls into it (not to mention it has dice for other games). Given my players use the other 4 sets we aqcuird but I just use the app now, quicker and cheaper.

IKR! I LOVE THE APP! I Use It For Every Game I Play. Its Official Dice From A Gaming Company. I Even Use It For Like Dnd

I've considered the dice app but ultimately rejected it for two reasons.
1. I don't have a smartphone, so I'd be buying it for someone else.

2. I want to encourage everyone rolling out in the open, something our group hasn't had.

Printing the labels defeats the purpose of having translucent dice. I could print on a clear label, but I don't think the black symbols would be as visible that way.

Shapeways and 3D printing might be the way to go, but by Vader's Titanium ******** that would be expensive!

Send an email 6o customer service. They may replace it. They are b ery good from whathe I here.

The one thing I have not seen anyone post is casting their own dice. Make a mold of the dice and then cast what you need. Unless you are selling them, I doubt that FFG will bother with you. Now, it will limit your options on material, but I think it is a viable idea. Now it may not be cheap to start, but I believe it could be cheaper than 3D printing. Also it should also be less sanding and polishing.

I think I saw something like 70 pages worth of dice on Shapeways. Holy $DEITY, Batman!

But they did have some seriously nice sets. Yes, they were **** bloody expensive, but seriously nice.

Good point! Dropped them a note - the worse that happens is they laugh in my face.

don't worry, desslok. I'll laugh in your face to help prepare you for it. it'll be like roleplaying, only meaner. I am a good friend.
