Power play (session report)

By Julia, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Finn, Gloria, Jacqueline, Luke and Trish challenged Yibb-Tstll, aided by the Black Goat of the Woods; as usual, AH, DH, KH, BGotW and MH Mythos in play. The starting equipment was kinda meh, but we managed to have a Hand Camera (discard while you gain a clue token during an encoutner to gain an additional clue token and have another investigator gain another clue token): vital to pass Trish' personal story. Additionally, Trish was blessed also with a copy of the De Vermis Mysteriis: an item that, if you know how to use it, it grants you very often a victory by closing gates served on a silver plate. The first Mythos opened a gate at the Woods, releasing a Warlkock (more clues, yay!) and a Formless Spawn, that moved to the streets. Good news: the Mythos card was All Quiet in Arkham!: everybody checked Luck and everybody gained a Blessing. In the distance, poor Yibb started writing an application for a different citizenship (Yibb was the protagonist of one of my neatest victories in Arkham, with her doom track frozen at zero, so, she's never happy to meet me, lol).

Anyhoo, first turn: Finn moved to the Unnamable to gain 1 clue + 1 clue during the encounter phase (if I only I had sent there Trish); Gloria moved to the Silver Twilight Lodge to gain a citizenship; Jacq shopped an Elder Sign at the Curiosity Shoppe; Luke enjoyed the Dreamlands a little more and finally Trish moved to the Unvisited Isle to gain 1 clue at the end of her movement.

Mythos phase: Unvisited Isle, Trish was drawn through the double Celano / Great Race gate with only 3 clues.

Next round: Gloria went for a double clue at the Historical Society, ready to jump into the Woods gate the following round; Jacq went to the Newspaper, searching for some more money, but finding a nice informant who used the remnants of her money to have her gaining clues; Finn went for a double clue at the Science Building. In the OWs, Luke moved to the second area of the Dreamlands, Trish was restored to a non-delayed position, but no clues gained during encounters.

Mythos phase: Independence Square, gate to Another Time, releasing a Dark Young and a Deep One.

The "Arkham guys" fed Jacq some more money, so that she went shopping again. Three choices: Crystal of the Elder Things (bleah), Healing Stone and Elder Sign Pendant. I got the Pendant, since with the Herald a surge is a doomer, while losing San or Sta is a lower entity problem. Luke returned to the Woods, killed the Warlock and reached four clues. He decided not to seal, to leave a passage for Gloria, who grabbed Luke's Gate Box and jumped into Lost Carcosa. Among the OWs encounters, the only relevant was Trish's: she gained a clue, hence two thanks to the Hand Camera, which also provided Luke the fifth clue he was longing for. Perfect.

Mythos phase: Woods, again. This would have meant a monster surge and a +1 doom, but the surge was cancelled thanks to the Elder Sign Pendant. Two monsters appeared under Luke's feet: Serpent People and a Goat Spawn. Hence, not too big a trouble.

Trish returned to Arkham and sealed the Unvisited Isle, Luke sealed the Woods; Finn entered the Another Time gate in Independence Square, knowing that in this way I was having an edge over the Mythos deck of basically two gates (Gloria was able to return anywhere, and the De Vermis Mysteris would have granted me a +1 closed gate). Jacq went clue hunting. Gloria's second area encounter in Lost Carcosa was smooth, while Finn got a little damaged since failing a Will check caused him to gain Mania (you must spend clues in pairs, hence you cannot use five clues to seal, but you need six, something quite difficult to achieve with Yibb in play)

Mythos phase: Another Dimension opened at Wizard's hill, pulling into play Nightmare Pool.

Not a big problem: Jacq, Luke and Trish worked on the rumor, passing it immediately. Gloria returned and sealed Wizard's Hill. Finn moved to the second area of Another Time, and the encounter resulted in no furter damage for him.

Mythos phase: Woods, gate burst, opening the Abyss and R'lyeh. Sure, I could have cancelled it with Jacq spending two clues, but why? I needed another gate open, and I didn't want risking a double doomer Mythos card to appear.

Next round: Finn returned and closed Another Time at Independence Square, Trish used her tome to close the last gate and it was done, 5 gate trophies with 5 investigators in play, no gates open: victory!

Victory by closing gates in 6 Mythos (doom track stuck at 4)

Julia,

You finished the game in the time it takes me to prepare and eat a meal...I definitely see the difference between our styles when I read Session Reports such as this one. Good for you, though...finishing in six Mythos is quite an achievement even for you, right?

Ciao,

Joe

Yes, it never happened to me to win in less than 6 Mythos. It's not the first time I score such a victory (it should be the 5th), but I was never able to go below this number. I should play with less, or push on Naacal Key and hope in triggering some gates during encounters, but it's not something easy to do.

Still, this game lasted 43 minutes. As soon as we finished, we were like "ok, and now? another one?" still wanting to play Arkham :D

I'm not sure you actually aren't Bast Julia with your dedication to this game and helping the community. I always feel my local cat's it's only $2 after all.

LOL

(but yesterday I had to put Arkham back in the box. Sad)
