Learning a new acquired D2e

By tk13047, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

hello!

a small question for you all. i've recently received Descent 2e, all big box expansions and a couple of other things (conversion pack, etc) and it's all in great condition... but there's a LOT of it.

i've never played the game, but always wanted to.

my question is, do you think it'd be worth me attempting to divide it into it's expansions, so i could learn and play from the original box, adding in the rest as I see fit, or should I just dive in and dig through the cards and so on each time I play?

thank you!

My personal recommendation is to play through the base game, no expansions, 4 heroes, once. Then, add whatever you like. It should be very easy to separate everything, since every card is labeled with an expansion icon (usually in the bottom right of the card.) Map tiles don't need to be separated, since the quest guides will just tell you what pieces to include.

Some quests (like "Death on the Wing") say "when all objective tokens are on the map," for these situations, check the base game component list- there should only be 10 objective tokens in the base game.

Thanks. Out of interest, is there anyway to differentiate the tiles?

Yes- the tiles are ordered numerically in an increasing fashion. All of the base game tiles have numbers 30 and below. The very small pieces are not numbered.

If you have a little time, head over to the quest vault . You can create a quest that includes all of the expansions. Then, while you're editing the map, on the right side there are checkboxes for which expansions to show tiles for. Check one at a time, and you can see exactly how many of which tiles come with each expansion. This will also tell you how many objective tokens, etc come with each expansion, if you are interested in separating it that far.

Ok thanks. Yeah, I'd kinda like to get it back to everything in the right box, as new. My OCD nearly had a heart attack when i saw the boxes :D

Match up what you have to what you should have for the fun of it, Then start with the base game and go quest by quest. let your players pick any hero they like and have then learn the rules with you.

Copied this from another one of my posts in a different thread:

Here are the NUMBERED tiles for all expansions:

Descent Base Game - The Shadow Rune: 1-30

Lair of the Wyrm: 31-35, S1A

Labyrinth of Ruin: 36-43

The Trollfens: 43-49, S2A

Shadow of Nerekhall: 50-69

Manor of Ravens: 70-79

Notes: Yes, both Labyrinth of Ruin and The Trollfens came with corner connector 43. Multiple pieces. In addition, all of the sets came with 1x2 end pieces and 1x2 connector pieces. The base game came with entrance and exit tiles. Some of them came with 2x2 connector pieces. I personally just bag all of the non-number pieces in a separate bag.

Well I'll disagree with one thing: it's not that fan for OL to play with base monsters only, so I would add all monsters from SoN for example just to give OL some choices (like in Masquerade enc1, where using only base monsters you have 2 open groups and only two monsters (goblins and zombies) to choose from).

I have no idea what this means.

Thanks to the others, cheers all. I start tomorrow :)

He means that if you play with the core box only, then you have very limited choice as for which monster groups you can take as an open group in a quest. Most quests have pre-defined monster groups that have to be present in the quest, plus a certain amount of "open groups". Open groups means the OL can choose another monster group as long as both group and quest share a trait. Traits are the symbols on top of the quest.

So for instance, if a quest has Dark as a trait, then it means I can choose Shadow Dragons as my open group, since they have the Dark trait.
