Against the grain

By cubby09, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have posted my thoughts on the current meta and my eagerness to be successful against it using an unorthodoxed approach.

The centerpiece of th ebuild is some form of Luke+LW+r5p9+stealth=36

the reroll on offense coupled wiht the extra die/reroll/pilot ability on defense is good fun.I am trying to get the best fit to go with him. I need something to enable a pilot skill abouve han and whisper but also have enough power to punch through the massive amount of shields and hull in the current meta.

the best that i have come up with is:

roark +ICT+chewbacca=28

BSP+FCS

bandit

what ammendments to you have to the list using current tournament legal builds?

Luke Skywalker — X-Wing 28
Lone Wolf 2
R5-P9 3
Stealth Device 3

Roark Garnet — HWK-290 19
Ion Cannon Turret 5
Chewbacca 4

Etahn A'baht — E-Wing 32
Swarm Tactics 2
R3-A2 2

-----

Etahn with Swarm has 2 ships firing at PS12 usually Himself and Roark. But since you are building off the unorthodox You can try keeping Luke and Etahn in formation (rendering LW useless for a while) until your opponent rakes out Roark.

If they find Etahn the more important Target move him closer to Roark so Luke can active LW and Etahn and Roark can attack at PS12.

Luke's Got the Blues

Luke w/ Lone Wolf, R2-D2 & engine upgrade

Blue squad w/ HLC & FCS

Blue squad w/ HLC & FCS

I dunno if its super competitive, but it sure packs a punch. The B's fly nice and slow so its easy to keep Luke away from them w/ Lone Wolf active pretty much all the time. Personally I feel R2-D2 is better than R5-P9 because its not action dependent and green moves are less restrictive when you've got an engine upgrade (also helps luke keep pesky phantoms/interceptors in arc). Also, engine upgrade allows Luke to flank and still get into the engagement on the same turn as your Blues, thus ensuring you've got maximum firepower in the critical first round of shooting.

Of course, you can always go with your 36 pt. Luke and have 2 pts left over...

I think I'd take Shield Upgrade over Stealth Device on Luke. It makes it less likely that you'll get taken to hull before you can run off and regen.

First, I'm not too sure how much I like the SD on Luke, but here's what I came up with based on your Luke:

Luke w/ LW, R5P9, SD

Corran w/ VI, FCS, R2D2, EU

Proto w/ CR, SD

The Stealth on the Proto was just because there were 3 points left over. You could switch it out for Flechettes on Corran, (which would then give you a point to upgrade Luke's SD to SU which would be better imo).

Here you have 2 hard hitting regening pilots. Corran is very maneuverable and at PS10 can take care of phantoms. With his double tap, he can also put the hurt in on fat ships. Luke uses his Jedi ability coupled with LW to basically always get at least 1, normally 2 evades, and then spends that Focus at the end of combat to regen a shield. The Prototype is a very useful and maneuverable blocker that everyone underestimates. Make sure you take advantage of the free TL's you'll get when you know you're going to block the target.
