Can a player refuse/decline to use/place asteroids in a tournament? Just curious.
Asteroid question: Can a player refuse to use/place asteroids?
They're a requirement in a tournament game, so unless your TO decides that they're optional (which is unlikely), get used to playing with them. There was a good article by World Champ, Paul Heaver, that dealt with them. It's worth a read.
In friendly games of course you can use whatever terrain you and your opponent can agree on.
I strongly recommend not playing on a plain board though. Some obstacles make the game much much more interesting.
It is an option to place them in a way that has little to no impact on the game though, especially if both sides agree.
It happened at worlds where both players lined them up on one side of the board so they had no real impact on the game.
According to the current official tournament rules, the players must place all 6 asteroids. It's on page 2 of the tournament rules PDF.
