What is the most underrated ship? (A ship that is better than most people think)

If you could pick 3, which would you say were the most underrated?

Heres my list. Based on my personal experience. In no particular order.

Tie Defender

Lambda Shuttle

Headhunter

Y-wing

I think people are really, slowly, coming around on the Defender.

Underrated are the Advanced and the E-Wing. They are too easily written off as bad ships because they aren't cheap, but the E-Wing and Defender are quite comparable really. And the Advanced has always been good at surviving.

The problem with this forum is that we're all geared towards the tournament environment which is geared heavily towards massive damage output in order to win in a certain time limit.

Funny, Defenders never see play anymore in my area. Underrated ship I'd probably say prototype a-wings after the refit. With 3 agility + evade +4 hp these guys are great little tanks at just 15pts. And their dial is great for blocking (where the ps1 actually helps). For a 3pt extra they're a huge upgrade over the good old z95

Lol, I was just thinking the exact same thing.

The ships I think are most underrated are the Y-wing and the HWK. The Y flies like a housebrick- until you put an R2 on it, when it's actually not too bad. The HWK gets a lot of grief, but it has some great support abilities on the pilots (I'm a fan of Roark) and Moldy Crow makes the blaster turret actually useable.

The Advanced is awesome now, but it was geniunely bad before. It wasn't that it wasn't "competitively priced", it was that it was so expensive that running it pretty much crippled you. I've never lost to an old TIE advanced, and I've never won with one. People say it's great at surviving but if you're actually trying to do any damage with it it isn't.

They're not underrated at all in my experience: they're rated very highly.

Alot dismiss the defender due to its cost and never give it a fair shot, but that's changing bit by bit it was eclipsed by the phantoms.

Y wings are decent support ships but the general playstyle has moved away from support to early alphastrikes so it's fallen behind but s&v will help alot with that.

I'd say hwk is one of the most underrated.

I think the X-wing. There are lots of people bemoaning it, but I think it's still good and relevant. The problem is you don't to boost or barrel roll with it. That's not a problem with the ship, really. Just a limitation of the player.

I think that there is a difference between "over priced" and "underrated"; a lot of the ships I see people listing fall more into the "over priced" category.

Example: IMO, the TIE Advanced and E-wing are "over priced", whereas the Y-wing and HWK-290 are "underrated".

Overpriced means costs too much. Underrated means people treat it as worse than it is, that it's true power isn't appreciated.

1. The HWK-290

Because even with having to buy a turret it's still cheap enough. And the support skills for rebels are great. The scum pilots are even nice for straight up fighting. Of course Autothrusters will give them some trouble so soon this might not be true anymore.

2. The Firespray

Does not get a lot of play where i play and i don't know if that's justified. But this might be a local phenomenon.

3. The Defender.

But i am still not sure if it's underrated or just underpowered. It can perforn well just that the Phantom sadly outshines it. There have been many improvement threads for it and i think they have a point. It performs but as soon as it is confronted to real top tier choices it gets really difficult.

Probably directly comparing reputation to effectiveness, I'd say it's the shuttle.

It's easily the ship that I hear people complain about the most or use as the standard benchmark for being a "bad" ship. However, it's also extremely points efficient and benefits well from certain upgrades. It's good enough in competitive play that it sees play in some top level tournament play, and based on Major Juggler's analysis of worlds 2014 it seems like a middle of the road ship in terms of effectiveness rather than the a bottom tier one.

I'm voting for anything with 2 attack. In this era of phantoms and turret Heavy Laser Cannons, two red dice just gets scoffed at.

I would say the Y-wing, the HWK and the Defender. Possibly the E-wing, but Corran and Etahn see a fair amount of play.

I would also say the Y-wing is about to leave that category when Scum comes out, maybe to the HWK, but less so on that one I think.

The Defender is a great ship in concept, but in todays stress meta it is severely handicapped. I think it's 1 and 2 hard should have been white and only the 4 and 5 straight should be green then it would compete for its cost.

I would say the Firespray as well. Its a nice solid ship and a lot cheaper than a HLC YT-2400. However, I think what holds the FS back is the Imperial pilots. Really the generic Bounty Hunter is the best of the bunch, the others are meh... I do think you'll see a lot more FS with scum. Scum Boba and Kath are pretty **** good.

I'm sorry, but the Advanced isn't underrated. It sucks. Vader is playable but only because he's got an awesome ability that can almost compensate for how bad the Advanced is. Once the Raider drops, the Advanced will be a lot better than it is but it still won't be underrated because it's already being hyped up so much.

Apart from point cost it is a sturdy little ship. Sure, it could do with better attack, but that's only in an environment where you have to attack heavily.

Agreed the advanced isn't underrated it's over priced for what it can do, the raider fixes will make it a fighter worth taking without it being an auto include.

Point cost is a defining characteristic of a ship when squad building and can't be separated from its stats, and that's what people mean when they are critical of a ship -- they're speaking of the relationship between its abilities and how much it costs. An academy pilot is a good ship for 12 points. For 20 it would be terrible. For base 21, the advanced is not a good ship, but once it gets that title, it will be a great ship for the cost.
