What do you think you're going to concentrate on?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

Hell, in X-Wing you aren't even ALLOWED to use 2 decks.

The chances of FFG not putting enough damage cards in the core set to actually play a standard sized games is unbelievably slim....it goes against basically their entire design ethos.

It is a pleasure to know))

Haven't played X-Wing, missed it in some way. Was out of SW stuff for a decade.

But hell the game wouldnt even been out long enough for anyone to get used to any of the ships or the game mechanics..

Good point. Wave 2 would change gameplay completely, and I think it is expected in the summer?

Summer seems like a solid guess on Wave 2, yep. Puts about 2-4 months between Wave 1 and 2, which seems reasonable.

Hi Krass,

Welcome to the FFG forum! What made you come back to SW after so long?

I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to give X-Wing a try before you try Armada. It's less expensive and it will probably be easier to come by. Also it will be easier to find a wider community of players.

I'm not sure that we'll get it that soon. I do think that we will have Wave 1 in the summer, but I imagine that it will still be recently released. FFG is a bit infamous for being optimistic about their release dates.

...I wouldnt worry about what cards came with what when this game is released....unless your into competitive play.

This is a very good point: Around here, friendly games want you to have (at least) one copy of every card you use -- for ease of reference.

Does this fit with the "house" rules in other areas?

Focus on?

For Imps: the VSD, TIE/Ln, & TIE/ In will be my focus. I will have one GSD on hand -- just in case I need a Fast Response/Flanker. That should become apparent once we see how how much punch the Objective system has. Paint scheme: "any color you want, so long as it is Imperial March Grey."

For Rebs I am going with a "Remember Alderaan" theme. I expect to run 1 AF Mk II, 2 Neb B's, and at least 2 CR-90's. Fighters to be a mix of X, & Y Wings. Fighters are likely to be painted up in some variation of the Alderaan Defense Force colors from the EU / X-Wing series. I will likely invert the ADF scheme: red and black on white, instead of white and black on red. I might go crazy and add squadron designators to the individual fighters.

Since all the models are unlikely to fit into 300 pts on a side, I plan to have a substantial side-bar from day 1.

We dont even ask for the one copy of the cards here, since everything is available online anyway. We all own them regardless for tournaments etc, but for friendlies dont even get them out.

Okay. My memory has definitely gone to seed: If I don't have the silly thing right in front of me, I cannot remember what it says! :D

Haha, thats fair. We all have tablets so use those, we dont do it from memory :D

Does anyone know if any gaming sites sell 6'x3' spscr gsme mats?

Not many i believe, though i bet they will start very soon after Armada comes out....

Did find thse though:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Deep-Space-Vinyl-Gaming-Battle/dp/B00KB11RVO

http://www.deepcutstudio.com/category/mats-size-3-x6

Second one is a 6x4, but just let it drape a bit. So they are around :)

The Deepcut one (third link) look awesome in the flesh...my mate has a 3x3 for x-wing.

It's incredibly unlikely that you'll be forced to use 2 damage decks. Hell, in X-Wing you aren't even ALLOWED to use 2 decks.

I think what he means here Extropia is that in X-Wing you have a damage deck per player, you aren't supposed to share because a) one player might get the worst cards leaving not so bad ones for the other player and b) you will probably run out and have to "recycle" cards off destroyed ships with any battle larger than a couple of fighters.

So for Armada, yes a core set should be large enough for one players fleet, but if you are having a friend over to play who does not own the game, then you will need two decks, one for you, one for your mate.

I mean I guess you could put two 3'x3' mats of the same kind together lol. Its what it look like the people in the star wars Armada demo video on you tube did.

Yeah, im tempted by this idea so I can use them for x-wing too - but wonder if they would fit together nicely or if it would leave an annoying seam that would disrupt gameplay?

I think ill do this till someone makes an official 6'x3' mat for the game

We use 3' X 3' pieces of black felt. We combine 2 for larger games.

It should be available at any craft store that sells material (cloth). Or at any sewing supply store.

The local fabric store's web-page is selling 3' X 6' black felt for $2.98 at the moment.

Thats my current x-wing solution. I airbrushed some stars on (or rather my wife did....she's quite a talented airbrusher!) and voila. Cheap as anything.

Yup, thats what I currently use too - but I use a large piece as a table cloth with a 3x3 square marked out with tape on one side of it. The felt is good because it provides a nice strong friction to reduce accidental "bumpage" Those maps are very pretty though :D

Well story is rather long. Came here from Hearthstone and casual MTG, but never played miniatures games before. Step by step I learned about Star Wars LCG, then X-Wing, and then Armada.

Star Wars, well I was big fan in school. Watched VHS to death, then DVD with original voice-over, that was first time I ever watched something in English, and from that point I built a lot of my English skills around Star Wars movies and games. I remember the time when I was cutting from paper ship tokens with painted Star Destroyers and squadrons of TIEs. Man, I think Armada was my dream game of childhood. At some point of high school I even developed my own Star Wars encyclopedia web-site. Translated a lot of ship info into my native Russian back then.

But then was other cool stuff in life. University, girls, guitars, MMOs, work... no place since 2005 for Star Wars. And here I am, finished my studies, quit my last job and last relations, bored with EVE-Online and mediocre on the guitar. At least Star Wars developed some new stuff)))

X-Wing is rather cool but here in Moscow we are out of expansions, and I think it is not enough deep game for me. There is only two miniatures that I really want on my table top from X-Wing: TIE-Avenger and TIE-Defender. I rather spend more money on Armada, because I want to collect every capital ship. And two games are too time consuming.

Weird thing: I am making Armada website on Russian. Translating for the community, and learning HTML5... sort of.

Great to hear you are getting back into it, I have to disagree with Mikael, If I was starting new then I would jump into Armada firstmost as I think it will be the deeper, more rewarding game, and then get selected X-Wing units and a core to mess around with in addition to that if wanted :)

I started a thread about possibly using the two games together a while back, which is an idea that I am still keen to try, particularly for smaller scale skirmishes :)

Welcome to the Armada famly Krass,

I think it's awesome that your working on a Armada site in Russian stay positive and keep at it. You never learn anything if you bump your head and stop and from what I've heard Russians can have some pretty thick skulls ;).

I think you'll enjoy Armada more so than X-Wing. So far everything we've seen seems to suggest it is a thinking persons game where X-WIng has morphed into a quick hack and slash. But I do encourage you to see if there are any demo nights at the local stores and give both of them a try(well once Armada comes out that is) cause you never know.

I have a feeling im going to like Armada over X-Wing. This has so much more tactics involved with it. Its not just about whos got the bigger ship or who has the bigger guns. I love how everything has a strategy behind it. I love how this game plans on using small fighters in conjunction to the capital ships. Im glad that gaining points involves winning objectives. So many great elements are being used in this game. Building a fleet looks to equally fun.

I am basically in this boat as well

Sad thing is that I had no interest in armada during the Wave 4 meta. I felt things were diverse and challenging and that phantoms, while difficult, were a fun ship to face given how hard you had to think about predicting it.

Now that Wave 5 has brought out nothing but 360 arcs and a dice-off to shame $40k, Armada has begun to look exquisite. I think it's the objectives, specifically, that will push me over the edge into a pre-order (just waiting on the point cost of the rebel capital ships). After playing Warmachine, I didn't think I'd ever get back into the "just kill things" objective until X-wing pulled me in and now I'm beginning to yearn for specific scenarios in my Star Wars miniatures game :(

I think the scale also does it for me. More squadrons with a few capital ships firing multiple shots does mean more rolling, but it also means you can get closer to the expected probability and plan around it (whereas I feel I've lost quite a few games of X-wing because the enemy got some absolutely perfect rolls on my ties and my green dice decided to be fickle too many times in a row, you can lose a lot in just one roll)

I pre-ordered the Raider quite a while ago, but interest in Armada has halted any plans to expand in to S&V

As for focus, I really just want Star Destroyers and Tie fighters, but I know everyone else in my area will too...so I'm going to have to grab a bunch of B-wings as well.

During this week alone I have become facinated with the Assault frigate MK II, I think on a day when I want to change things up from Imperials I'll run a fleet made up of Assault frigate MK II, dual Neb B's and some squads of Y-wings and or B-wings...i know those two have the ability to bomb from what I have see from pictures.
