Achievement Unlocked

By Sautille, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

One aspect that I found entertaining on the Crit Juice podcast was the use of achievements in a ttrpg similar to that in a video game. I thought it would be entertaining to try in using FFG's Star Wars and was wondering if people had any ideas.

Obviously a number of achievements would be specific to the campaign and cast of characters, but a number could be actions that the PCs would normally undertake, such as drawing first blood, completing a goal, mission, quest, etc. Though I feel a number of achievements would also be for more obscure actions that the GM could through into the game that may or may not come up, like falling short/medium/long/extreme distances and living/walking away from it, or donating to a charity, helping someone that isn't part of a goal or quest.

These achievements could then be traded in for minor effects. Crit Juice usually uses combat bonuses, but the bonuses could be anything. Like the donation unlock might allow for a bonus to a charm or negotiate check within certain circles.

The achievements would probably be one time unlocks, sometimes for player, probably usually one time for the group as a whole, and I imagine there'd have to be a limit of one bonus per action to avoid holding onto achievements to stack any one particular action.

Basically just small things that might come up a few times per session at most that reward players a little for becoming involved and curious about the game world. Thoughts? Ideas on achievements? I'm sure some of you have some pithy achievement titles.

Achievements. I had not thought of incorporating these into EotE. The charity one sounds like a good idea, maybe something like "Think of the Children!"

Mook Killer: Kill All The Mooks With One Shot

Rancor Hunter: Kill A Rancor

Cutpurse: Steal A Wallet

No One Can Stop Me: Hack A Daunting System

Unbelievable Cosmic Power: Deal 50 Damage

Hit And Run: Kill Someone With A Speeder Or swoop

Grand Theft Auto: Steal A Speeder It Swoop

Casanova: Seduce 50 People In Game

ALL THE MONIES: Make 50 Million Credits

Just Another Day : Take A Boring Job And nothing Goes Wrong.

Boom, Head Shot: Kill A Rival With A Single Head shot

Yeah, there was a d&d one circulating a while back. Funny as heck, but not something you can easily remember.

It sounds like fun, but I'd be afraid my players would focus more on achievements then on the story and cinematic elements of the game.

I've always found myself hesitant to use dark-side destiny points (To me, it always felt a little "GM-as-adversary"). Your achievement idea could be a way to flip those chips back over. Basically 'do the thing and get a light-side point back'. Particularly good if 'the thing' is some story-driven goal.

Thing is, most achievements in a game are unknown until you’ve actually done them. And then you get a sudden surprise when you get that “Achievement Unlocked” notice.

If you could keep the list of achievements away from the players, and not repeat any achievements that any other players have gotten, then I think you could keep things focussed on the story aspects of your game.

Otherwise, you’ve just gamified your game in a way that you probably didn’t intend, and the consequences could be … unpleasant … for you and for your game as a whole.

A year or so ago, I came across these for D&D.

Not used them in the SW game, but I had lots of them in the Dragon Age role-play I ran just before we started this one.

Alas, none of them are SFW though :)

They Would For A Little While, but Like All Things New, It Would Calm Down From It After A While.Maybe A Session Or Two.

It's a neat idea. I would keep the Achievements list secret from the players, and not even let them know about it until one was actually unlocked, which might be as early as the first session of course. Each time an achievement is unlocked, I would give that player a token of some sort, redeemable (once) as a Bonus Die for anything they want. Seems like an extra bit of metagaming fun for the players, to be honest.

Lando Shot First: betray a fellow PC

No Good To Me Dead: accidentally kill an NPC who was important to the story

I am pretty sure everything about the idea of adding achievements to a RPG would be bad. The video game philosophy already hinders RPG play enough as it is, it would be doubly bad if you encouraged video game style thinking.

Paper RPGs are NOT video games. The goal isn't to get as powerful as possible so you can wtfpwn any encounter. The goal is an interactive story told with the GM and Players. Any 5 minute search on this forum alone can see how much trouble happens when people equate paper RPGs and video games.

I weep for GM's that would incorporate achievements into Paper RPGs.

And breathe ;) I take your point here, and achievements are something I wouldn't include in my games. Having said that, I got the impression that RPGs originally stemmed from the prevalent nerdy pastime of the day - fantasy wargaming. Is it natural therefore that modern RPGs might emulate elements one of most prevalent contemporary pastimes - video games?

And whether you're going to use this idea or not, you have to admit that the DnD achievements posted somewhere above are hilarious...
