Debris field obstacles & actions & you

By JESIV, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I had this come up today in a tourney where the T.O. allowed Debris Fields & Asteroids during the set up.

Tycho landed on an debirs field. He rolled a red dice = no crit. The player then wanted to peform his chain of actions (Tycho + PTL + Daredevil + EI). My stance was that a debris field is still an obstacle and as such you skip your perform action step if you land on it. The player argued that since the debris field rules did not say you skip the perform action step, that Tycho was an exception (since he can perform actions while stressed) and he should be allowed to take actions while parked on the debris field. The T.O. agreed and allowed the actions.

I still contend that there is nothing in Tycho's abilities that would allow him to override the core rules for obstacles. The difference was Tycho getting shot by 2 ties (Howl + OSP) at range 1/2 with no chance to shoot back or Tycho getting a R1 shot on Howl, with the 2 ties not shooting back...of course he rolled 3 blanks - used the TL (that I still say he shouldn't have had) and then rolled 2 crits and a hit).

What say you?

The rules for the debris clouds a little different than for asteroids. Instead of skipping your Perform Action step, you gain a stress token after the Check Pilot Stress step and you only suffer damage on a critical roll. It's also clear you can still attack while on one.

Sorry, but the TO made the correct call.

It is a little fuzzy since the rulebook doesn't make a distinction between obstacles in general and asteroids specifically, but yeah, the rules in the book apply specifically to asteroids and the rules for debris fields override them.

FFG should issue a clarification, to prevent misunderstandings, though.

Yeah, looking at it with a cooler head (and with both sets of rules out in front of me) I can see where it is clearer and the call made was correct.

That's why you don't rage quit! Now I'll have to go back and humbly apologize to both the T.O. and my opponent.

Just a follow up. If I perform green move and land on the debris field. I first, check pilot stress..THEN apply the stress for being on the debris field correct? I can't clear the stress for the debris field by using the green move as a trigger?

Yep. That's right. If you do a green, you'd clear a stress if you had one, then cop another one for the debris.

Hey James! I was your oppenent for that match. No worries man, we've all been there. I was just sorry to see you go. Looking forward to a rematch!

Hey Hooth, My humble apologies for being 'that guy'. I too, look forward to a rematch (or in our case a 'match').

Since then I've been telling everyone about the cool A-Wing build that temporarily broke my brain, lol. How did it fair for the rest of the day?

Not too bad. My next match I got rammed to death by a decimator in a hilariously short time. Next match I got to see my intimidation arvel actually be useful by bumping a nearly full health chewy/3po/lando falcon and my entire team brought it down to one hull in one round of firing. Match after that I got lucky when my opponent flew his full health corran off the board and I managed to squeak into 4th plalce at 3-1.

I want to know that cool A-Wing build now.

Nothing that special, just u-turn tycho with EI.

Tycho Celchu (26)

Chardaan refit (-2)

A-wing test pilot (0)

Push the Limit (3)

Daredevil (3)

Experimental Interface (3)

33 points total

Lots of fun to fly as it lets you do absurd amounts of post movement maneuvering. Its almost like a mini phantom. But with only two attack dice, probably not tourney competitive given the total cost.

Yeah I played with a similar version of Tycho for fun last night and although I pulled out a win I just wasn't sold that he would be competitive. I suppose with the right support though..I ran him with 2 Blue b-wings and a Bandit Z-95 and it was underwhelming. I will agree it was loads of fun collecting stress tokens and pulling off his wild moves.
