I am interesting in trying one of these miniatures games and i am not sure which one. What is the difference between Armada and X-wing? What advantages/disadvantages does each game have in your opinions? Thanks for your help!
What is the difference between Armada and X-Wing
Its hard to say in detail at present as of course Armada isnt out yet, but i would say:
- Armada is a bit slower paced. By which i mean you have to plan your orders and moves turns in advance, rather than quickly reacting to a dogfight like X-Wing.
- Armada ships look likely to last a lot longer than individual ships do in X-Wing, and will take concentrated fire to bring down the larger ones
- To me so far, the rules look better in Armada. I feel that FFG learnt a lot of lessons from X-Wing (not saying it has majot issues....it doesn't, and it's brilliant) and incorporated them into Armada.
- Armada needs more space....a normal size game wants a 6'x3' board instead of X-Wings 3x3. This is a big deal to some, less so to others.
I'll probably add more later
Thanks for comments. I didn't know Armada hadn't been released yet.
It's about a month or two away.
I guess thats another point...X-Wing has more to pick from, but that can be good and bad. It can feel quite hard playing "catch uP" at times...with Armada you'd be getting in at day 1.
The games are very different scales and mechanics.
As Extropia pointed out, X-Wing is all about the fighters, so its a game of quick turns, desperately trying to get guns on your opponent and take them out. Most games feature 3-7 small fighters, but can include a few larger sized ships. Above the "tournament size" of 100 points (for people who like to play massive games) X-wing can start to get a bit clunky and things don't always work so great - but I am talking 300 points + here, which is a massive game that would likely take several hours to play.
Armada in contrast is all about the capital ships - they are big, slow, cant really turn much but have devestating firepower. Fighters still make an appearance, but as entire squadrons with a much simpler movement and combat mechanic as they arent the focus on the game. When Extropia talked about Armada learning from X-wing he means things like X-Wing uses the same red dice for every attack in the game, just a different number of them, where as Armada takes it deeper by recognising that not every attack is equal to be compaired by one type of dice, so they have made the game with 3 types of attack dice, ones for long, medium and short range.
They are both really fun, but as an X-Wing player I am really excited about Armada and the added depth it will bring. Armada does look to be more expensive to get into though, but with both games players who want to be able to have a wide range of forces to field will end up making a sizable investment over the long run
I'll hazard to say that Armada will be a bit more complex than X-Wing, so if you want a game you can more easily pick up and master you'll probably be better off with X-Wing.
Also, X-Wing is available now, so you can rush out and buy it!
(Then you can get into Armada afterwards.)
I would disagree actually. You should check out the "ARMADA love over xwing?" thread for some ideas of the differences. One of the things I pointed out in that thread is that I feel like the speed of games in Armada will better match the intent of the game. I got into X-Wing about 10 months ago, and I'm already far more excited about the mechanics in Armada. If they had both been out when I got started (or Armada had been as close to launching as it is now) I'm fairly confident I would have just waited for Armada.

I may have done so as well, but it would have been a mistake.
Through X-Wing, my gamer social life has really flourished since I got into the game back in the late spring. If I had waited for Armada, I would have probably been starved for people to play with, because of the momentum the game will still require to become popular.
That's just my situation, though. YMMV.
Well said.
I think of X-Wing and Armada in computer game refrences
X-Wing is the First Person shooter fast furious in your face action
Armada is more the slow steady pace you get with a turn based Strategy game you gotta think of what to do next while also playing 2 steps ahead since you dont know whats hiding in that fog of war.
The difference between Armada and X-Wing is that Armada will have better played out games due to objectives and better strategy. This is just my opinion but I feel Armada will offer more to what alot of people wished X-Wing could

Your mouth to FFG's ears.
However, I think that what happened with X-Wing in this regard, is simply a function of what the X-Wing community wanted. While I also want to do games with more narrative content, it's a lot of work to engineer as opposed to just popping down to the FLGS to play some 100-point-6-asteroid Death Matches. I don't think we can fault FFG for not trying to make it happen.
I hope the objectives help us give the games more narrative content, but how much will that actually be with just 12 objective cards?
If you like the starfighters, go with Xwing.
If you like the fleet battles, go with Armada.

Yes, there's that, but there will also be more nuanced differences.
